DeepSeek faces expulsion from app stores in Germany
Germany has taken steps towards blocking Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from the Apple and Google app stores due to concerns about data protection, according to a data protection authority commissioner in a statement on Friday.
DeepSeek has been reported to the two US tech giants as illegal content, said commissioner Meike Kamp, and the companies must now review the concerns and decide whether to block the app in Germany.
'DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union,' she said.
'Chinese authorities have far-reaching access rights to personal data within the sphere of influence of Chinese companies,' she added.
The move comes after Reuters exclusively reported this week that DeepSeek is aiding China's military and intelligence operations.
DeepSeek, which shook the technology world in January with claims that it had developed an AI model that rivaled those from US firms such as ChatGPT creator OpenAI at much lower cost, says it stores numerous personal data, such as requests to the AI or uploaded files, on computers in China.

BERLIN: Germany is aiming to establish a joint German-Israeli cyber research center and deepen collaboration between the two countries' intelligence and security agencies, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Sunday. Germany is among Israel's closest allies in Europe, and Berlin has increasingly looked to draw upon Israel's defense expertise as it boosts its military capabilities and contributions to NATO in the face of perceived growing threats from Russia and China. 'Military defense alone is not sufficient for this turning point in security. A significant upgrade in civil defense is also essential to strengthen our overall defensive capabilities,' Dobrindt said during a visit to Israel, as reported by Germany's Bild newspaper. Dobrindt, who was appointed by new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz last month, arrived in Israel on Saturday. According to the Bild report, Dobrindt outlined a five-point plan aimed at establishing what he called a 'Cyber Dome' for Germany, as part of its cyberdefense strategy. Earlier on Sunday, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soeder called for the acquisition of 2,000 interceptor missiles to equip Germany with an 'Iron Dome' system similar to Israel's short-range missile defense technology.

Austria to Stay on Formula 1 Calendar Through 2041 After Contract Extension
The Austrian Grand Prix is set to stay on the Formula 1 schedule until 2041 after a long-term extension was announced Sunday for the race at the Red Bull Ring. Austria already had a contract through 2030 agreed two years ago, and the new extension sees it match the Miami Grand Prix as the only F1 events contracted into the 2040s. The Austrian Grand Prix is closely connected with Red Bull's presence in F1. The Red Bull company's co-founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, who died in 2022, funded the renovations that allowed it to return to the calendar in 2014 after an 11-year absence and rebranded it as the Red Bull Ring. 'I am delighted that Formula 1 will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come,' his son, Mark Mateschitz, said in a statement Sunday. 'I am proud to continue my father's legacy and to preserve the rich history of motor racing in (the region of) Styria and at the Red Bull Ring–with and, above all, for the people of the region. Austria's close ties to Formula 1 are an excellent foundation for our long-term partnership. Working together, we intend to continue this success story for many years to come.' It continues a trend by F1 of planning for decades to come with unusually long deals for certain circuits. The Canadian Grand Prix was extended to 2035 earlier this month, while Miami got its extension through 2041 last month. Other Grands Prix with more than a decade to run on their contracts are Bahrain, which agreed a deal in 2022 that is valid through 2036, and the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne has an agreement through 2037.

French minister calls for extension of EU-US trade talks
PARIS: France's finance minister has called for extending EU-US trade talks beyond the July 9 deadline in order to secure a better agreement. US President Donald Trump has set the deadline for the trade talks, warning that failure to reach agreement could trigger higher US tariffs on goods from cars to pharmaceuticals. Progress in the negotiations between the huge trading partners remains unclear. European officials are increasingly resigned to a 10 percent 'reciprocal' tariff imposed by Washington in April being the baseline in any deal, sources familiar with the talks have told Reuters. 'I think that we are going to strike a deal with the Americans,' French Finance Minister Eric Lombard told newspaper La Tribune Dimanche in an interview published on Sunday. 'Regarding the deadline, my wish is for another postponement. I would rather have a good deal than a bad deal on July 9,' he said. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier this month that deadlines on some countries negotiating in good faith could be extended. French President Emmanuel Macron said following an EU summit on Thursday that France wants a quick and pragmatic trade deal with the United States but would not accept unbalanced terms. EU leaders discussed a new US proposal at the summit but the European Commission did not reveal the content of the offer. Lombard said that energy could form part of a trade deal, with the EU potentially increasing its imports of US gas to replace flows from Russia.
