Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is branded 'woke' by angry gamers who claim the game 'forces you to play as a transgender character'

Daily Mail24-04-2025
After years of rumours, one of the most hotly-anticipated video games of the decade has been released this week.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is an action role-playing game from US firm Bethesda that tasks gamers with stopping a demonic invasion on a faraway planet.
Released on Tuesday, the £50 game is amassing more than 120,000 concurrent players on PC gaming platform Steam alone.
However, many have been left enraged by a controversial change by the game's developers – prompting accusations of wokeness.
When picking their character, gamers are asked to select numbered 'body types' instead of male or female.
One critic said it 'forces you to play as a transgender character' because it removes concepts of male and female.
X user @Grummz posted a screenshot from the game with the caption: 'Why did they do this?
'There was zero need to change this in Oblivion Remastered. Bring back the original Male/Female.'
Another X user said: 'Oblivion Remake is another inflection point that will show who is actually opposed to wokeness and who is fine with it.
'The game forces you to play as a transgender character given it has removed male and female from the game. This should be rejected as the evil that it is.'
Yet another said: 'Looks like Oblivion Remastered is woke. We are male and female. Not body type A and B.
'This effort by Western developers to deny us OUR existence is entirely offensive.'
They continued: 'I will not buy this unless this is patched out. @bethesda No more of this c***.'
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered – available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox and Windows – is a remake of the original Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion from 2006.
Players must 'master swordcraft and wield powerful magic' as they fight to save a fictional continent called Tamriel from demons known as Daedra.
The original game from nearly 20 years ago let players select either 'male' or female' as their character's gender.
What is Elder Scrolls?
Elder Scrolls is a series of action role-playing video games primarily developed by Bethesda Game Studios.
This new game - 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered' - is a remaster of a popular 2006 game.
Players are tasked to 'master swordcraft and wield powerful magic' as they fight to save a fictional continent called Tamriel from demons known as Daedra.
Plans to released the game were leaked in 2023 before a release on Tuesday (April 22).
However, instead of genders, this new version offers two 'body types' – type 1 (which has typically female characteristics) and type 2 (which has male characteristics).
On a community page for gaming platform Steam, one buyer said they had been 'refunded' after noticing the 'woke' change'.
They posted: 'Remove the woke and well talk. Sick of a minority being forced on the majority. Fix it and I will pay for it.'
Another said: 'The woke has been in this series since the series was born. Some characters are both male and female at the same time, the Gods are gender fluid and Argonians can get a sex change at will.'
However, some people argued in favour of the change, with one saying: 'If you're that insecure over "Body Type 1" and "Body Type 2", how do you even function when faced with actual problems?'
In a blog post, YouTuber John F. Trent said Bethesda is pushing 'vile gender ideology' and continues to 'embrace the woke agenda' in the new game.
'Unfortunately, this change is not surprising,' said Trent, a staunch Catholic who is host of the YouTube channel The Trent Report.
'Bethesda and its partners have been pushing woke ideology and specifically gender ideology for quite some time with its games.'
This X user said: 'Looks like Oblivion Remastered is woke. We are male and female... No more of this c***'
As an example, Trent mentions another game in the Elder Scrolls series that introduced a 'gender-confused' character called Tanlorin, who is voiced by drag king Vico Ortiz.
Bethesda Softworks is owned by Microsoft, which released its Gaming For Everyone Product Inclusion Framework to the public last year.
This document, Trent points out, contains an entire guide on representation which includes various 'woke talking points'.
These include ensuring 'characters are represented respectfully and authentically' and validating different groups of people or cultures.
Trent adds: 'It even suggests developers track data view an inclusive content ratio, which measures the 'proportion of content featuring or catering to underrepresented groups."'
Nintendo finally reveals the launch date for the Switch 2 console - and fans don't have long to wait
It's one of the most highly anticipated devices in the gaming industry.
And now the launch date for the Switch 2 has finally been confirmed by Nintendo.
Eager fans will be happy to hear that there's not long to wait - with the device set to be released on June 5.
'All Together, Anytime, Anywhere. #NintendoSwitch2 launches June 5th!' Nintendo tweeted.
The new console will cost $449.99 - significantly more expensive than the original Nintendo Switch, which cost $299.99 when it launched back in 2017.
However, this doesn't appear to have put some fans off, with many flocking to X to discuss their excitement.
'So looks like I'll be getting a Switch 2 on June 5th. Nintendo really knocked it out of the park. It looks great,' one tweeted.

Fans call Steam Summer Sale 2025 ‘mid' but there's a reason it seems so bad

This year's Steam summer sale has got PC owners upset at its lack of decent deals, but it is good if you haven't played all the Fallout games. If you have a Steam account, chances are you've already perused the annual summer sale, that's been running since June 26. The sale is scheduled to end on July 10, so you still have another week to look for new PC games to add to your backlog; some of which are seeing discounts upwards of 90%. However, there's a perception among the Steam community that this year's sale is disappointingly 'mid' or just straight up bad. Over on the Steam subreddit, a popular thread titled 'Worse than Spring Sale' is full of people complaining about the lack of big discounts, especially for major releases. 'The annoying part is some games having the exact same discount for years. Like bro, your game has six years, I think you can drop below 50% already,' complains Ryuko50. 'Steam sales ain't what they used to be, that's for sure,' says Far_Inspection4706, 'Back in the day I remember major titles getting up to like 90% off. Now it's like even with the sales almost none of the major titles are any cheaper than $20 – 40 still.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. They add that when some games cost upwards of $70 (usually £60), discounts of 20% don't make them feel that much cheaper. This can be seen in examples like Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin's Creed Shadows, both of which launched earlier this year. In the UK, they're normally £60 but are currently discounted by 20%. However, that still means they cost £47.99 and £44.99, respectively. Worse than Spring Sale by inSteam Similar complaints can be found in this thread on the PC Gaming subreddit, with the top comment by Eat–The–Rich– also decrying the discounted prices: 'There are so many 5+ year old games on 'sale' for $45+.' Others, like SenseiRaheem, are confused about some games being omitted from the sale entirely. Both The Last Of Us games, for instance, are still at full price, although other Sony published games, like God Of War: Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2, are discounted. So, is this a sign that Steam sales are progressively getting worse? Some Redditors argue that they've been dropping in quality for years, but there are other external factors to consider. As suggested by SgtRicko, the people complaining are probably long time Steam users who already have massive backlogs and have grabbed a lot of big name games through previous sales: 'Everybody's already got a huge Steam backlog and have been through several sales before, so it's no longer as novel and exciting.' A quick glance shows a number of games that are shockingly cheap, such as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Alien Isolation, and Borderlands 3, which are priced at £5.99, £8.74, and £2.49 each. These are bona fide steals, but chances are a lot of people already added them to their backlogs during previous sales. There's also inflation. Games have progressively become more expensive, so when they get discounted, they're going down to the prices that older players have become nostalgic for. Metaphor: ReFantazio, for example, is usually £59.99, but its 40% discount brings it down to £35.99. An arguably good deal, but that's how much major game releases used to cost roughly a decade ago. So, if you've been using Steam and enjoying its regular sales periods for as long, today's discounts aren't going to look as appealing. More Trending Ultimately, these discounts are aiming for people who are new to Steam and don't already have massive backlogs. If you fit that category, we can highly recommend investing in the Fallout games since you can get the entire series for less than £30. With the discounts, here's how each of the game's currently costs: Fallout 1 – £1.99 Fallout 2 – £1.99 Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel – £1.99 Fallout 3: Game Of The Year Edition – £5.27 Fallout New Vegas Ultimate – £6.39 Fallout 4 – £6.39 Fallout 76 – £8.74 There is also a Steam bundle that throws in the Fallout 4 season pass and a deluxe edition of Fallout 76, but that's more expensive at £68.15 (though still discounted by 43%). You can use the bundle link to purchase each game individually if you want to stick to below £30. If you want to see more of what the Steam summer sale has to offer, you can start with its home page, which features its top deals. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Games Inbox: Why I sold my Xbox Series X to get a Switch 2

The Tuesday letters page wishes someone would form a new publisher to rival EA and Ubisoft, as one reader asks when the next Nintendo Direct is. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Jumping out The news that a former creator of Xbox thinks that Microsoft has given up, willingly or not, on making hardware came only a day after I sold my Xbox Series X in order to fund a Nintendo Switch 2. I didn't do it primarily because of the Switch 2 though, that was kind of just the excuse. I've had an Xbox console since the 360 and, like Phil Spencer said, I'm stuck in the 'ecosystem'. But I've had enough of it. I'm not going to get another next gen system that's going to be playing runner-up all generation, especially when I know it won't have any exclusives. I don't like anything Microsoft is doing at the moment, including the focus on AI and the upcoming job cuts. They bought Activision and then they just became Activision. The company that I used to like in the Xbox 360 era is gone now and it's not coming back. The Switch 2 is just an aside though. I can afford it now but what I'll look for now is getting a PlayStation 6 when It comes out. It'll be my first Sony console since the PlayStation 2 but I'm looking forward to it. 84Colbat Almost there I know Microsoft has announced their next gen plans already but I don't think there's anyone optimistic enough to think that it's anything more than a token effort. That exec has been working on Xbox since the beginning, and I'm sure knows lots of people that are still there, so if she thinks Xbox hardware is 'dead' I'm not going to call her wrong. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Whether it matters or not I'm not sure, from Microsoft's business point of view, but I don't really care. There's no way I'm going to buy an Xbox console again, not after the last two generations, and clearly I can play anything I want on PlayStation 5. Plus, if I was that desperate for Game Pass or any future exclusives they might make, I'd just play it on PC. As I understand, designing and manufacturing a console is expensive so given how things are going not making them anymore may actually save Microsoft money, but either way I'd say in terms of gaming they are at least 90% software only already. Tamos Hardcore audience What I don't get about the Xbox hardware plans is who do they think is going to buy their new consoles, given how badly the Xbox Series X/S is doing? I wouldn't say they'd be able to count on hardcore fans at all. In fact, I'd assume they're the least likely to give them another chance, given how the last two generations have gone. And I don't see them attracting new fans either, because that means more casual gamers who certainly aren't going to pay £500+ for a PC handheld. I don't imagine they're likely to pay around that for a new home console either, unless there's something very special about it. There's no sign that Microsoft is pivoting to casual friendly games, so I'm not sure what options are left. What I could understand is if the next gen Xbox was basically a PC in a box, but they specifically said it wasn't that, so I guess I just don't get it. Hammeriron Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Evil evolves The interesting thing to me about Resident Evil Requiem not being open world is just how tightly focused it feels. Village wasn't exactly open world, but it did have a lot of areas you could go back and forwards from. Requiem seems to be mostly set in a spooky hotel and a bombed out Raccoon City, and apparently Raccoon City isn't in it much anyway. Maybe there's more, I'm sure there is, but I like the vibe so far. There's almost a Silent Hill feel to some of it so far and that means Resident Evil is yet again evolving. I think that's great, whether I even like the changes or not. Constant change is why Resi is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and other franchises could learn a lot from that. Grando Direct information I see that Elden Ring on Switch 2 seems to be getting ready for release, since it has an age rating now, but would that just be released without warning or would they do it in a Nintendo Direct? I know it was briefly in the April one but with a game that big I wouldn't have thought it would just slip out. Surely it's time for Nintendo to do a post-launch Direct that can give us a clearer picture of what the second half of the year is going to look like. We know about games like Elden Ring, and Hyrule Warriors 3, but they have no date or much information about them. I like my Switch 2, but I want to know what's next. Probst GC: We'd be shocked if Nintendo didn't have multiple Directs this year. Although there is a possibility that all or most of them will be focused on a single game, like the recent Donkey Kong Bananza one. New players I don't know what the chances are of EA Sports FC 26 being a flop, or even just not selling as well as EA hoped, but personally I hope it doesn't. Not because I have any love for the series or EA but we cannot afford to let any other big publishers go under. It's very unlikely EA will go bust any time soon but the second they start doing badly they become prey for the likes of Microsoft and Sony, and then that's another independent publisher gone. It's the same with Ubisoft. They might not be anyone's favourite publisher, but we do not need any less choice in gaming. Or even more well-known companies to be owned by the same giant corporation. What I'd really like to see is new publishers being created but I think the only real attempt like that was Embracer Group, which took the usual dumb venture capitalist approach of trying to buy up other smaller companies and then getting impatient when they didn't immediately start making money. I think CD Projekt may eventually grow into a large publisher, that publishes more than their own stuff, but not any time soon. If I had the money, I'd set one up and sign up a bunch of AA indie games – ones like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that look almost like AAA games – and take it from there. You don't have to own the developer, just publish them and take your cut and help nurture new studios. That sort of long term thought just doesn't seem to happen anymore though. Pinky Horrific soundtrack I've just had the best evening going about domestic mundanities but with the chip music of World Of Horror playing in the background (courtesy of a streaming site). Can't believe how good this is. I've promptly moved the game from saved for later to buy now. It's so good. I've no idea how the game will sit with me but when the music is this good then I don't think I can go wrong. Classic chiptune goodness. D Dubya Movie tie-in So, what are people's guesses as to what the next big Nintendo game to be announced will be? We've had Mario Kart and that's really it in terms of mainline entries, unless you count Donkey Kong as a 3D Super Mario. That's a whole question in itself and I have no idea of the answer, except I assume that there's going to be some kind of actual Mario game out around the time of the movie sequel next April. Whether that'd be 2D or 3D though I don't think there's any way of telling. So I guess that might be the next one, but I'd be surprised if Animal Crossing wasn't also announced within the next eight months or so. We all know how weird it was that they stopped supporting the old one, so surely that means work on the Switch 2 game must've started a long time ago? Unfortunately, most speculation for Nintendo is along the lines of not understanding why they haven't done it already. A spin-off instead of Splatoon 4 is weird, no Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe at launch is weird, and Hyrule Warriors 3 instead of a remake or better spin-off is also quite the choice. The Mario Bros. movie coming out next year is really the only thing you can base a prediction on but even then, it's nothing you can take to the bank. After all, Nintendo did exactly nothing for the first one. Badgerman Inbox also-rans I'm willing to bet that whoever used the term 'liquid metal' did it specifically to make a Terminator 2 reference. If you heat it up all metal is liquid and I'm pretty sure there's not a load of mercury, or whatever, sloshing about in my PlayStation 5. Whistler RE: EA Sports FC 26 vs. Rematch. I would rather play a game where thousands of real players are in it and tons of leagues and teams agree to be in the game than Rematch. Especially on how you can build your team and how fun it is when Team of the Season and Beyond starts.
