
Radnor Valley farm grows from meat boxes to Powys farm shop
Radnor Valley farmer, John Goodwin, credits the Farming Connect Agri Academy Business & Innovation programme for giving him the guidance and supportive networks to achieve ambitious new goals for himself and the family farm business.
Persuaded to apply in 2017 during a chance meeting with his local development officer, Natalie Chappelle, the experience proved the catalyst to what John says has been a transformational journey.
'Meeting so many experienced, knowledgeable farmers, business people, sector specialists and mentors inspired me to change my perspective on not only my personal aspirations, but they gave me confidence to 'set the bar higher' for the farm too.'

John and his wife Jess's approach to farming 'greener' and utilising new technologies to increase profitability, continues to reach impressive new levels. The couple's achievements were recognised earlier this year when they won Lantra Cymru's prestigious 'Innovator of the Year' award.
John and Jess, who is also from a Welsh farming background, have built up an efficient, sustainable beef, sheep, pigs and arable farm business, at their 500-acre holding located between Presteigne and Knighton, based on their regenerative farming ethos.
Early adopters of biomass and solar energy, one of their most significant achievements has been developing their small-scale meat box business, which had been run largely from the farm kitchen, into a successful farm shop.
'The pandemic changed customer buying patterns and demand for our meat suddenly trebled virtually overnight,' says John.
'In order to capitalise on that opportunity but recognising we didn't have the resources to staff a shop, we sought strategic business advice from Farming Connect through the Advisory Service and attended numerous business-relevant events.'
Armed with optimistic financial forecasts and having simplified their livestock management system to free up time, the couple invested in a purpose-built shop at the end of their drive, installing cashless chilled vending machines. They also repurposed an outbuilding for packing and processing - Hindwell Farm Shop was in business.
'It was a significant financial commitment, but the shop is now a key source of income, which longer-term, will help provide a livelihood for our agri-student son George when he completes his studies.'
With three fresh and frozen vending machines installed, the popular 'self-service' shop now stocks not only the Goodwin's own farm-produced meat, but a wide range of local produce too.
'Being part of the Agri Academy proved a personal turning point for me,' says John.
'The Agri Academy changed my outlook on not just my own personal ambitions but for developing the farm in a sustainable way in readiness for George to eventually take over the reins – it's been a win-win for the whole family.'

Recycling Firm Launches Groundbreaking Technology to Tackle Japanese Knotweed

The firm has invested in a new unit, which is the first of its kind in the UK. The technology is capable of eradicating Japanese Knotweed and restoring soil health without the use of chemicals. The firm described it as 'a major step forward for sustainable land management' and said it will benefit a wide range of landowners, industries and private homeowners. The technology was launched at Gavin Griffiths Group's Cwmgwili site and was attended by industry stakeholders, academics and government representatives. Invasive plant species such as Japanese Knotweed are one of the leading threats to biodiversity and infrastructure in Europe. Over 500 million tonnes of soil are dumped in landfills annually across the EU because of harmful pathogens. According to the United Nations, up to 90% of the world's topsoil could be at risk by 2050 unless new remediation practices are adopted. The traditional removal methods of spraying, weeding or burial are costly, time-consuming and largely ineffective. This new technique of soil treatment uses superheated steam to neutralise weeds, seeds and harmful pathogens in the soil, allowing soil to be safely reused. Other territories in Europe, such as Scandinavia have already widely adopted this new system where it's been shown to reduce soil disposal by thousands of tonnes and cut project costs dramatically. He said: 'Japanese knotweed according to government reports can cause damage of up to 10% on property and production values, if left untreated. The damage and nuisance claims resulting from such a failure to address these issues are significant and costly. 'The legal duty to manage and control this invasive species is fiercely enforced with the complete range of civil and criminal penalties involved. Action to take practical, immediate and diligent action is determinative to show that the landowner has acted correctly so there would be for the landowner a defence or limitation of liability. The introduction of this system bringing the best of industry standards would be a significant tool in addressing an important environmental issue and addressing a landowners duty of care or a robust defence. The use of such new innovative processes must be considered a positive change in the farming and other property sectors. ' The unit is based at Cwmgwili but can be transported to larger remediation project sites throughout the UK as required.

Canada's Imperial Oil posts lower quarterly profit; announces first production from renewable diesel plant
Aug 1 (Reuters) - Canadian oil producer Imperial Oil ( opens new tab posted lower second-quarter profit on Friday, hurt by weaker crude prices and a decline in refinery throughput. The Calgary, Alberta-based company — which is majority-owned by U.S. oil and gas major ExxonMobil (XOM.N), opens new tab — also announced the first production of renewable diesel from its new Strathcona plant near Edmonton, Alberta. On a conference call with analysts, Imperial CEO John Whelan said the company completed construction and commissioning of the Strathcona facility, which is the largest renewable diesel plant in Canada, during the second quarter. The C$720-million facility will use vegetable and agricultural oils as feedstock to produce lower-emission fuels for Canada's transportation sector. The facility was designed to have the capacity to process more than 1 billion litres of renewable diesel annually, but Whelan said production levels will depend on supplier capabilities as the facility ramps up. At the time of the project's announcement in 2021, Imperial said it planned to source "blue hydrogen," or hydrogen produced from natural gas using carbon capture and storage, for use at the facility. While the company has sufficient "grey hydrogen" — which is produced from natural gas without the use of carbon capture and storage, resulting in higher greenhouse gas emissions — to start up and operate the facility, longer-term hydrogen supplies are uncertain. "The viability of further hydrogen supplies and blue hydrogen will impact the speed of the ramp-up of the asset," Whelan said. Benchmark Brent crude prices were lower during the April-June quarter compared to a year earlier, pressured by weak global demand, market volatility due to tariffs, and increased oil supply from OPEC+. Imperial said its net income fell to C$949 million ($684.31 million), or C$1.86 per share, in the quarter ended March 31, from C$1.13 billion, or C$2.11 per share, a year earlier. Imperial's total throughput volumes, or the amount of crude processed, fell to 376,000 barrels per day during the second quarter, from 387,000 bpd a year ago. The company's total refinery utilization stood at 87%, down from 89% in the same quarter last year. Upstream production for the April-June quarter was 427,000 gross barrels of oil equivalent per day, higher than the 404,000 gross boepd a year earlier. ($1 = 1.3868 Canadian dollars)
