The lowdown on UEFA Women's EURO 2025 Day 1️⃣2️⃣

Yahoo3 days ago
The group stage at EURO 2025 will be concluded today with Group D taking centre stage. Here's what to look out for with the final two teams booking their spots in the quarter final.
Before we get into today's action, what happened yesterday? ⏮️
Sweden and Germany battled it out for top spot in Zurich and it was the Scandinavians who ultimately prevailed. A bizarre handball from Germany's Carlotta Wamser saw her sent off in the first half and that allowed Sweden to stroll to a 4-1 win.

In the other game, Denmark's dreadful tournament reached a new nadir as they lost 3-2 to Poland to finish the group stage with three defeats from three.
Who is playing today? 👀
England take on Wales in St. Gallen knowing that a win will see them through to the last eight. Wales haven't exactly lit up the tournament but Cymru will want nothing more than to get one over on their rivals.
In the group's other game, France take on Netherlands with Les Bleus looking to maintain their 100 per cent record so far.
Player to watch 🔎

England's 4-0 hammering of Netherlands last time out was arguably the Lionesses best performance since the World Cup semi-finals two years ago.

Sarina Wiegman's side were sensational all over the pitch but nowhere more so than in midfield.
Georgia Stanway has had to endure a tough season domestically with Bayern Munich, suffering a ligament tear in January which many thought would keep her out of the tournament entirely.
But Stanway has proved those doubters wrong and will be integral later as England take on Wales.
Key storyline 🔑
Can Netherlands cause one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far and beat France?
It's going to be an uphill task for Andries Jonker and his side, with the Oranje so throughly beaten by England last time out.
The Dutch will need to beat Les Bleus by three goals to have any chance of making it to the last eight.
Must-watch video 🎥
A special moment for a special player as Fridolina Rolfö celebrated her 100th cap yesterday.
Fun facts 📊
Wales have committed the fewest fouls in the tournament so far with just 13.
Wales are also bottom when it comes to pass completion, average possession and shots attempted.
England have never lost to Wales in their 10 previous meetings, winning nine and drawing one.
France are unbeaten in their last five games against Netherlands, winning three and drawing two.
Our predictions 🔮
Netherlands 0-3 France
England 3-1 Wales

Ryder Cup places up for grabs at British Open

Europe will defend the Ryder Cup in New York in September (Alberto PIZZOLI) The British Open tees off on Thursday with not just the glory of lifting the Claret Jug on offer for the field at Royal Portrush but places in the Ryder Cup up for grabs for US and European players. Europe will defend the trophy at Bethpage, New York, from September 26-28 as they seek a first victory on US soil since 2012. Advertisement AFP Sports looks at the state of play ahead of the final major of the year. How does qualifying work? Each team is made up of 12 players, six who will qualify through their performances over the past two years, and six who will be captain's picks. The cut off for earning points for US players comes after the BMW Championship on August 17. European players can earn points until the conclusion of the British Masters on August 24. Players who defected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf do not earn points for their results on the breakaway tour but are still eligible to play, either through earning points in the majors or via a captain's selection. Advertisement Already qualified Only two players have already guaranteed selection, the two best in the world each with a major to their name this season. World number one Scottie Scheffler cruised to the PGA Championship in May and will be keen to make amends after a rare emotional outburst when he broke into tears after a record 9&7 defeat alongside Brooks Koepka to European pair Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg in Rome two years ago. Rory McIlroy is a Ryder Cup veteran, who often saves his best for the event. The Northern Irishman will face the Americans for an eighth time after winning the Masters in April and will be looking to add to his 18 Ryder Cup points, the eighth highest in European history. Advertisement Who is in pole position? The core of the European team that romped to a 16.5-11.5 victory two years ago in Italy are in line to join McIlroy. Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka currently sit in the top six of qualifying. For the Americans, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau and J.J. Spaun's major victories over the past two years has put them in pole position, alongside Russell Henley and a resurgent Justin Thomas. Other contenders American captain Keegan Bradley faces a fascinating dilemma over whether to become the first playing skipper at the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963. Advertisement Bradley sits ninth in the qualifying standings and seventh in the world after winning the Travelers Championship last month. The 39-year-old said that victory "changes the story a little bit" after initially ruling out the idea of picking himself should he fail to qualify automatically. A raft of other big US names could do with a big week in Portrush to further their chances including the out-of-sorts Koepka, former British Open champion Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay, who has caused a furore by not wearing a cap in Rome as a protest over not being paid to play in the event. On the back of Cantlay's stand, for the first time in Ryder Cup history US players will be paid $500,000, $300,000 of which must be donated to a charity or charities of their choice. Advertisement On the European side, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Justin Rose can be confident they will be picked by captain Luke Donald. Despite his defection to the LIV Tour, Sergio Garcia has talked up his chances of playing in a record-equalling 11th Ryder Cup for a European player and adding to his already record 28.5 points. Matt Fitzpatrick and Nicolai Hojgaard are the two most at risk from the 2023 European team of missing out, while the latter's brother Rasmus sits seventh in automatic qualifying. kca/nr

Exclusive: Juventus new £15m offer for Sancho to Manchester United

Football Italia can exclusively reveal that Juventus have increased their offer for Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho to £15m (circa €17.3m). This is considerably closer to the €25m asking price, which is considered frankly unrealistic considering he is already into the final year of his contract and has a massive salary. Advertisement Sancho holding out for Juventus WROCLAW, POLAND – MAY 28: Jadon Sancho of Chelsea celebrates his team's victory at full time following the UEFA Conference League Final 2025 between Real Betis Balompie and Chelsea FC at Stadion Wroclaw on May 28, 2025 in Wroclaw, Poland. (Photo by) As we had already confirmed over the last 24 hours, there was more intense contact between Juve and Sancho's entourage, which resulted in a new proposal. It is worth £15m, circa €17.3m, and an improvement on the €15m including add-ons that had been rejected. It was already known that the player had agreed personal terms and that he was holding off on other alternatives to wait for the Bianconeri to get a deal over the line. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea, who paid a fee to avoid buying him outright for even more. Still only 25 years of age, the winger was purchased from Borussia Dortmund for €85m in the summer of 2021.

Chidozie Awaziem set for Nantes return

Chidozie Awaziem (28) is set to return to FC Nantes, according to L'Equipe. The Nigerian central defender will reportedly sign a three-year contract. Awaziem came through the FC Porto academy but failed to establish himself in the first team, making just 15 appearances for the Portuguese side. During his time at Porto, he was loaned to Nantes for the 2017–18 season, where he made 23 appearances for Les Canaris. Further loan spells followed in Turkey (Çaykur Rizespor) and Spain (CD Leganés), before he moved permanently to Boavista F.C. in September 2020. Advertisement After just one season at the Portuguese club, Awaziem went out on loan again – first to Alanyaspor in September 2021, then to Hajduk Split for the 2022–23 campaign. He returned to Boavista for the 2023–24 season, followed by short stints with FC Cincinnati and Colorado Rapids in the MLS. Having yet to settle permanently at any club in his career, Awaziem will be hoping to make a more permanent home at the Stade de la Beaujoire. GFFN | Ed Marsh
