Scarlett Johansson becomes world's highest-grossing lead actor after Jurassic World Rebirth
Scarlett Johansson has become the global box office's highest-grossing actor following the release of Jurassic World Rebirth. The new blockbuster has seen the accumulative takings of Johansson's film credits put her in pole position as the star with the most lucrative box office success – ahead of fellow Marvel stars Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. Johansson was catapulted to stardom in 2003 following her role in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, and in the last two decades, her filmography's worldwide takings stand at $14.61bn (£10.7bn). Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr's figures stand at $14.60bn (£10.7bn) and $14.3bn (£10.5bn) respectively – and Johansson has managed to surpass them with just 36 films compared to Jackson's 71 and Downey Jr's 45. The Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit star also beats her MCU co-stars' average gross for each movie, with Johansson's average worldwide gross at $405.9m (£298m), ahead of Jackson's $205.7m (£151m) and Downey Jr's $318.1m (£233.5). Johansson's screen debut arrived in 1994 comedy North when she was just 10 and, later that decade, she had supporting roles in Home Alone 3, The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World. In Jurassic World: Rebirth, Johansson stars as Zora Bennett – a mercenary hired by pharmaceutical rep Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) to join palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) on an excursion to acquire dinosaur DNA from a facility owned by the creators of Jurassic Park. Johansson took over lead duties of the franchise from Chris Pratt, who played navy veteran Owen Grady in Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World: Dominion (2022). In its first six days in theatres worldwide, the film has earned $318m (£233m), second only to one 2025 release – the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2, according to data from The Numbers. Johansson previously revealed the extent she went to be cast in Jurassic World: Rebirth, saying she spent years monitoring reports of any new franchise installments and flagging news to her agents. 'I was like, 'Show me the sets! I want to participate!'' the actor said. She told been trying to get into this franchise in any possible way for over 10 years. I'm like, 'I'll die in the first five minutes! I can get eaten by whatever! I'll do the craft service!' I'll do anything for it. 'The fact that it's happened in this way at this time just is actually unbelievable. I can't believe it.'

AI video becomes more convincing, rattling creative industry
Gone are the days of six-fingered hands or distorted faces -- AI-generated video is becoming increasingly convincing, attracting Hollywood, artists, and advertisers, while shaking the foundations of the creative industry. To measure the progress of AI video, you need only look at Will Smith eating spaghetti. Since 2023, this unlikely sequence -- entirely fabricated -- has become a technological benchmark for the industry. Two years ago, the actor appeared blurry, his eyes too far apart, his forehead exaggeratedly protruding, his movements jerky, and the spaghetti didn't even reach his mouth. The version published a few weeks ago by a user of Google's Veo 3 platform showed no apparent flaws whatsoever. "Every week, sometimes every day, a different one comes out that's even more stunning than the next," said Elizabeth Strickler, a professor at Georgia State University. Between Luma Labs' Dream Machine launched in June 2024, OpenAI's Sora in December, Runway AI's Gen-4 in March 2025, and Veo 3 in May, the sector has crossed several milestones in just a few months. Runway has signed deals with Lionsgate studio and AMC Networks television group. Lionsgate vice president Michael Burns told New York Magazine about the possibility of using artificial intelligence to generate animated, family-friendly versions from films like the "John Wick" or "Hunger Games" franchises, rather than creating entirely new projects. "Some use it for storyboarding or previsualization" -- steps that come before filming -- "others for visual effects or inserts," said Jamie Umpherson, Runway's creative director. Burns gave the example of a script for which Lionsgate has to decide whether to shoot a scene or not. To help make that decision, they can now create a 10-second clip "with 10,000 soldiers in a snowstorm." That kind of pre-visualization would have cost millions before. In October, the first AI feature film was released -- "Where the Robots Grow" -- an animated film without anything resembling live action footage. For Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, Runway's co-founder, an AI-generated feature film is not the end goal, but a way of demonstrating to a production team that "this is possible." - 'Resistance everywhere' - Still, some see an opportunity. In March, startup Staircase Studio made waves by announcing plans to produce seven to eight films per year using AI for less than $500,000 each, while ensuring it would rely on unionized professionals wherever possible. "The market is there," said Andrew White, co-founder of small production house Indie Studios. People "don't want to talk about how it's made," White pointed out. "That's inside baseball. People want to enjoy the movie because of the movie." But White himself refuses to adopt the technology, considering that using AI would compromise his creative process. Jamie Umpherson argues that AI allows creators to stick closer to their artistic vision than ever before, since it enables unlimited revisions, unlike the traditional system constrained by costs. "I see resistance everywhere" to this movement, observed Georgia State's Strickler. This is particularly true among her students, who are concerned about AI's massive energy and water consumption as well as the use of original works to train models, not to mention the social impact. But refusing to accept the shift is "kind of like having a business without having the internet," she said. "You can try for a little while." In 2023, the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA secured concessions on the use of their image through AI. Strickler sees AI diminishing Hollywood's role as the arbiter of creation and taste, instead allowing more artists and creators to reach a significant audience. Runway's founders, who are as much trained artists as they are computer scientists, have gained an edge over their AI video rivals in film, television, and advertising. But they're already looking further ahead, considering expansion into augmented reality and virtual reality -- for example creating a metaverse where films could be shot. "The most exciting applications aren't necessarily the ones that we have in mind," said Umpherson. "The ultimate goal is to see what artists do with technology." tu/arp/aks/mlm

The First Reactions to James Gunn's ‘Superman' Are Mostly Super
Fans are mere days away from seeing what James Gunn and the DC Universe have in store, and early word is super. Superman comes to theaters July 11, with early fan screenings happening July 8. In preparation, the social media embargo on press and influencers who've seen the film has now lifted, and the response is incredibly positive. Many praise the film for its unique take on the character and world. Others love new actors such as David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. But not everyone thinks it's an across-the-board home run. Here are just a few of the first reactions pouring in for James Gunn's Superman. #Superman soars. It's a non-stop joyride, packed with humor, action, and emotion. There's spectacle to spare, unbridled optimism, and a goofy unpredictability that ties everything together, even when there are a few minor issues. We've never seen DC like this, and it's great. — Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) July 8, 2025#Superman absolutely soars! An awesome achievement & hopeful balm, honoring past iterations (cinema & comics) while cutting its own path. Corenswet has that heroic shimmer. Hoult is delightfully diabolical. Brosnahan brims w/ vim & vigor. Krypto's adorbs. @Superman @warnerbros — Courtney Howard (@Lulamaybelle) July 8, 2025#Superman made me so damn happy. The movie is loaded with exhilarating action set pieces and well-placed humor and levity, but the beating heart of the film is Superman's humanity, and his insistence on doing good and making the world a better place. David Corenswet brings such… — Perri Nemiroff (@PNemiroff) July 8, 2025#Superman is a triumph for the new DC Universe. It's a comic book brought to beautiful live-action life, brimming with hope & fulfillment. It actually elicited tears of joy from me. It's a Superman for everyone. David Corenswet was born for Superman & Clark Kent. Loved it. — Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) July 8, 2025#Superman is a winner. I have complaints with the Marvel levels of CGI. But James Gunn has crafted a splashy colorful superhero film with tremendous characters. Mr. Terrific stole the movie for me. Corenswet and Brosnahan shine: I can watch an entire film on their chemistry alone — 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝘿𝙤𝙩𝙨𝙤𝙣 (@JohnMovieWatch) July 8, 2025James Gunn's #Superman is the perfect superhero movie and a terrific start for the new DC Studios. It's big, bright, exciting, full of hope & it never loses its sense of wonder. Watching it felt like ripping open a comic book & feasting on its wild, chaotic imagination. Loved it!… — Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) July 8, 2025I loved Superman! James Gunn embraces the earnest, sometimes lovably corny side of comics and their super (ahem) fun concepts in a way that evokes Raimi's Spider-Man. Corenswet & Brosnahan have great chemistry and perfectly embody Clark & Lois. And Krypto's the best, obviously. — Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) July 8, 2025I wish I could watch #superman on repeat for a week. They *finally* gave me the Lois Lane I've been begging for. The world needs this movie & we can all learn so much from Superman. I laughed. I cried. The DCU has arrived. @JamesGunn knocked it out of the park. — Roxy Striar (@roxystriar) July 8, 2025I absolutely loved James Gunn's SUPERMAN. Big themes, but still pure joy. It put me in a great mood (which isn't often these days); it's the happiest I've walked out of a theater since Top Gun: Maverick #Superman — Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) July 8, 2025SUPERMAN: The closest thing we'll get to a live-action Saturday morning cartoon. The cast (esp David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan) is literally perfect. It's a shame it looks like that. Full review coming soon! — Hoai-Tran Bui (@htranbui) July 8, 2025The full review embargo lifts Tuesday afternoon, and io9 will be posting ours at that time. That'll give an even better reaction of what fans can expect when they see the film this week, leading into the opening weekend that DC has been aiming at for years. Let's not forget that it was just over three years ago that Henry Cavill returned as the Man of Steel in Black Adam. The end credits scene was thought to usher in the next wave of DC films. However, soon after, the balance of power did indeed shift at DC with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge. They parted ways with Cavill, and one of their first orders of business was to announce a Superman movie for 2025. This Superman movie. And now it's here. Do you tend to believe these social media reactions? They can, admittedly, be overwhelming one way or the other, which could sour some audiences. Let us know below and check back soon for much, much more from the world of Superman. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, what's next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.
