Milk, the quintessential household staple, has been transformed into a colourful and aesthetic beverage with a range of flavours added to it. While milk retains its fundamental relevance, it's the flavour innovations that are truly capturing attention.
A recent report highlights this shift, noting that Gen Z often perceives traditional, plain milk as a 'Boomer beverage'. This demographic's influence has ushered in an era where milk is not just about nutrition, but also about personalised experiences and visual appeal.

Flavoured milk drinks often evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, transporting many back to childhood. However, in today's health-conscious landscape, this emotional resonance is overshadowed by the functional benefits sought by consumers.
'With better formulations, including options with lower sugar, functional nutrients and cleaner labels, flavoured milk has become a part of a healthy diet. It is a convenient source of quality protein and carbohydrates for someone with a high energy need.
It can be a nutrient-dense beverage option that contributes to recovery and energy without being 'indulgent',' says Dr Simrat Kathuria, a celebrity dietician and wellness coach.

While taste remains important, factors like nutritional benefits, ingredients, etc, are also vital. 'Flavoured milk has the perfect 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio for post-exercise muscle recovery. Using low-sugar flavoured milks can provide hydration, satiety, and recovery – all in one beverage,' explains Dr Kathuria. Maryam, a marketing professional, avoids anything too sugary, 'Sugar spikes my energy level.
So, I check the protein to carb ratio, and sugar content. I like to know whatever I am consuming is doing something positive for my body,' she says.
'Flavoured milk can be customised for dietary needs'
Today, customisation is a lifestyle for consumers. 'Milk is already an integral part of Indian consumption habits. Flavoured milk resonates with people because it builds on something deeply familiar. What makes it exciting is the ability to customise and express individuality through flavour, texture and presentation,' says YuSung Eo, co-founder of a tea brand.
Meera, a student in Kolkata, who recently started working out at the gym, has never enjoyed the taste of a protein shake.
'Flavoured milk is not heavy, and tastes far better than a protein shake in plain milk. It is like a little post-workout sweet treat for me,' she shares. 'I prefer to have oat-based flavoured milk because I am lactose intolerant. It not only tastes amazing, but doesn't upset my stomach either. Choosing dairy flavours that help my dietary needs is a blessing in today's time,' says Meher, a chartered accountant in Pune.

Mumbai: Many of the elderly in India are ill and are unaware about it, according to the latest findings of the ongoing Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) being conducted by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Deonar. The latest LASI findings show a gap between self-declaration of chronic diseases and actual incidence measured through blood tests. When India's first aging study — and the world's largest such study — began over eight years ago, researchers asked the 73,000 participants over 45 years of age to self-report conditions such as diabetes and anaemia. The findings, published in 2020-21, showed that 9.2% of those in the 45-59 age group and 14.2% of the 60-plus age group participants reported having diabetes. However, as a part of LASI, blood samples of all the participants were collected and analysed for HbA1c — a biomarker test for diabetes. These findings, released last week, showed that 13.3% of the 45-59 age group and 16.2% of the 60-plus age group had high HbA1c, indicating diabetes, said IIPS professor Dr T V Sekher, who is the principal author of the report. The study found that the proportion of older adults (age 45 and above) with undiagnosed diabetes ranges from 3% in Himachal Pradesh to 15% in Andhra Pradesh. More than one-tenth of the elderly (age 60+) have undiagnosed diabetes in Andhra Pradesh (16%), Telangana (14%), Chandigarh (12%), and 11% each in Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Tamil Nadu. While haemoglobin (Hb) levels found in the study indicate a lower prevalence of anaemia compared to other surveys, it showed that 34% of elderly Indian men could have anaemia. "The prevalence of anaemia is 35% among women in the 45-59 age bracket, but increases to 40% among elderly women," said Dr Sekher. LASI, which is sponsored by the Union ministry of health and family welfare, will continue for another two decades, with the same participants. "India is rapidly aging, and we need to understand the disease patterns among the elderly. LASI's findings will help devise better public health plans for the elderly," he said. While the 60-plus account for roughly 10% of the total population, it's estimated that they will make up 20% of the population in 20-25 years. This is the first time that the prevale-nce of diabetes and anaemia in a pan-India study was tested using blood samples. LASI covered 73,000 adults over 45 years and included 32,000 over 60 years or more. "LASI showed the difference between self-reported and actually measured prevalence of both diabetes and anaemia among older adults," said Dr Sekher.

1 2 Lucknow: Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday asked all state universities to equip their libraries with digital resources to make quality study material available to students, researchers, and teachers. While signing an MoU with the Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) Centre for 38 state universities and higher learning institutions, Patel said, "Free flow of information is the need of the hour. This agreement will enhance the quality of education by connecting higher education institutions (HEIs) with national and international research." Stressing on the importance of prioritising research that is relevant, realistic, and socially beneficial, Patel urged universities to address the problems faced by farmers, women, children, rural areas, health, defence, and society. She advised technical universities, health centres, and research institutes to focus on innovations and patents. Giving the example of the vaccine developed by Indian scientists in a short time during the Covid period, the governor said, "We have the resources as well as the talent. If we work with commitment, we can make India a leader in the field of research." She added that the manuscripts available in university libraries prove that our sages and saints did very high-quality research work, which needs to be re-awakened and taken forward today. On the occasion, the governor was honoured for three world records. The first was for conducting Surya Namaskar on June 21 for 14 lakh participants. The second was for organising a mass reading campaign, 'Padhe Vishwavidyalaya/Mahavidyalaya, Badhe Vishwavidyalaya', which saw 15.7 lakh participants reading books. The third world record was set for a collective resolution towards 'Dowry Free India' and 'Drug Free India', in which 16.1 lakh participants took an oath together. Besides, Patel also launched a dashboard @University of Uttar Pradesh, Rajbhawan, Lucknow.
