Warehousing project on mine-scarred land in Mayfield, Archbald on track to begin this year
Century Development Associates owner Mark Powell expects to begin work on his proposed Century Logistics Center during the second quarter of 2025, reclaiming about 87 acres of mine-scarred land and making way for two warehouses across the 230.4-acre site just off Exit 5 on the Casey Highway at the end of Rushbrook Street.
To pay for the mine reclamation, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced in September 2023 that it would award Mayfield $14.97 million through its Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Mine Drainage Grant Program to remediate the site ahead of the development. Mayfield applied for the funding on behalf of the Reading-based Century Development Associates.
Mayfield is now working to finish the paperwork on the grant, which comes from the federal government administered through the state, said grant administrator and former Councilman Ron Ryczak.
'It's a paperwork process at this point that we're trying to get squared away,' Ryczak said. 'The developer is keen on getting this done ASAP … so we want to make sure we have everything lined up.'
The funding itself is already locked in, with the borough receiving final grant approval, Mayor Al Chelik said.
The process of filling in the defunct mines is to essentially blast away the rock down to the level of the coal vein, putting the now-fragmented material back and compacting it, said Ryczak, who previously worked for the DEP's Bureau of Abandoned Mines for more than three decades.
According to a DEP grant summary for the project, there were two coal seams that were historically deep mined on the site: the Top Clark and Clark beds, with a 16-acre area covering a portion of the Clark mine that is considered a potential subsidence zone. In addition to reclaiming the mines, other work includes removing spoil piles, backfilling pits and excavating high walls, according to the DEP.
Powell said he is now waiting for his National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit, or NPDES permit, from the Lackawanna County Conservation District, which he hopes to receive during the second quarter of the year.
'The minute that permit hits my hand, we're going to be breaking ground,' Powell said.
Powell plans to build two warehouses — one in Archbald and one in Mayfield. If the reclamation work starts on time, Powell wants to begin construction of a 646,380-square-foot warehouse on the Archbald portion of the property in the fall, followed by construction of a 745,200-square-foot warehouse in Mayfield during the first or second quarters of 2026.
He estimates the entire project will cost between $110 million and $120 million, creating 500 to 700 jobs across the two buildings, with pay ranging from $20 to $40 an hour and most jobs being in the $20 to $30 range.
Powell could not comment on potential tenants in the warehouses, though he said, 'I don't think there's been a month go by where we haven't had inquiries about our two buildings. There's a lot of interest.'
He sees his logistics center as part of a growing warehousing trend in Northeast Pennsylvania. In less than a decade, developers and warehousing giants have increasingly turned to Lackawanna County to develop new warehouses, including Amazon opening warehouses in Jessup and Olyphant, as well as online pet retailer Chewy opening another in Archbald.
Powell pointed to the region's workforce and its proximity to multiple major highways. Because it is located along the Casey Highway, his logistics park will keep the wear-and-tear of the traffic out of the towns and on the highway system, he said.
'In the next 10 years, (Lackawanna) County is going to look very, very different,' Powell said, adding that he's had home builders contact him interested in building 400 to 500-home communities. 'You can go anywhere you want in the country on those highways. It gets you there faster.'
Citing U.S. Department of Commerce reports, Powell estimated the warehouses will contribute $200 million per year of goods and services and noted the tax revenue they will provide to their host municipalities.
The warehouses will have a large economic impact on the borough, which has an annual budget of just over $1 million, Chelik said.
Although a 10-year Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance term will reduce how much the property owner initially pays on improvements to the land, Chelik pointed to other taxes including local services and earned income taxes.
'These warehouses are going to be a boon to Mayfield,' he said. 'No question.'

Temasek sees more opportunities in Europe after investing $7.8 billion in region last year
(Refiles to fix formatting of alerts) By Yantoultra Ngui SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Singapore's state investor Temasek sees growing investment opportunities in Europe as the impact of trade tensions on the economic climate makes some companies more attractive in terms of valuations, a senior executive told Reuters on Thursday. A trade war, that followed U.S. President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" on April 2, had led to volatility in global markets and prompted some investors to focus more on European assets. Temasek, which invested more than S$10 billion ($7.8 billion) in Europe in the year ended March 2025, sees this macroeconomic environment as an opportunity to look at more companies in the region, executives told Reuters on Thursday. "Sometimes the macro helps us go into companies that we have liked, that were not within our reach from a valuation perspective," Nagi Hamiyeh, Temasek's head of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, told Reuters in an interview. "On top of it when you look at Europe, there is still a big gap in terms of valuation or valuation arbitrage in Europe and the U.S., so that makes us even more confident about what we can achieve in Europe," he added. Temasek reported an 11.6% year-on-year jump in its net portfolio value on Wednesday to a record S$434 billion at the end of its financial year on March 31. The S$10 billion investment in Europe made over the last financial year represents about 40% of the up to S$25 billion investment it said last year that it planned to make in Europe over five years. These investments included French renewable energy group Neoen and Ireland-based video game technology services company Keywords Studios. Looking ahead, Temasek is seeking investment opportunities in European companies that are global, as well as family-run businesses with strong franchises in sectors such as industrials, renewable energy, financial services and consumer goods, Hamiyeh said. Temasek sees potential to increase its exposure in markets such as France, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia, he added. ($1 = 1.2791 Singapore dollars)

Diligent Robotics hires two notable Cruise alumni to its leadership team
Diligent Robotics is bulking up its leadership team as the company looks to scale its fleet of humanoid robots that work in hospitals and pharmacies. Austin, Texas-based Diligent announced Thursday it appointed Rashed Haq as its chief technology officer and Todd Brugger as its chief operating officer. Both Haq and Brugger were most recently at Cruise, the GM self-driving subsidiary that shuttered earlier this year. Haq was formerly the vice president and head of AI and robotics. Brugger was Cruise's COO. Andrea Thomaz, the co-founder and CEO of Diligent Robotics, told TechCrunch it was the right time for the company to make these leadership hires. The startup has deployed about 100 of its Moxi humanoid robots, which assist healthcare facilities with non-patient facing tasks, and is now ready to focus on scale. 'We've purposely grown a little bit more slowly, I would say, over the last, two or three years, really honing some of the operational efficiencies and getting ready to be in a position to scale more dramatically,' Thomaz said. 'And that's kind of what we're gearing up to do the end of this year and next year.' Thomaz said she got introduced to Haq first and liked his deep AI expertise and experience getting novel AI algorithms to work in real life, through Cruise's autonomous cars, as opposed to just the lab. While having early conversations with Haq, she was introduced to Brugger through a mutual connection. She felt Brugger's experience scaling Cruise from zero vehicles on the road to hundreds seemed like the right fit for what Diligent needed. 'Todd and Rashed worked so well together at Cruise,' Thomaz said. 'Everything started coming together. We were in need of operational leadership. We knew that we were needing to hire someone with Todd's expertise, and it was really very much perfect timing.' Haq and Brugger both told TechCrunch that Diligent was a natural next step for them. The robotics company has already reached the deployment stage and the technology was very similar to what they were working on at Cruise. Haq added that autonomous vehicles are fundamentally mobile robots just called a different name. 'Many companies have early traction in terms of revenue and I call it 'vibe revenue,' because people try it out, and then they cancel their service afterwards, so then that revenue dies out,' Haq said. 'But with Diligent, if you look at all the metrics, the robots are actually in day-to-day use, and have become integral parts of the companies that are using them. So that makes it a very sticky product as well. So, you know, lots of interesting things about the company.' Brugger said that he was also drawn to Diligent because it had a lot of the same operational challenges and priorities as Cruise. 'There's a sort of a hierarchy, or pyramid, of priorities that we looked at that I think will be very similar,' Brugger said. 'You start with safety at the bottom of the pyramid, that's a nonnegotiable. Then you move up and improve reliability. Beyond that, you continue to work on product-market-fit, which a lot of times, is expanding the capability or the utility of the robots. So I think that sort of pyramid is the same. And then the way you think about deployments, I think the parallels are very similar as well.' Diligent was founded in 2017 by Thomaz and Vivian Chu. The company's Moxi robots are deployed in more than 25 healthcare networks. Diligent has raised more than $90 million in venture funding from firms including, Tiger Global, True Ventures and Canaan Partners, among others.
