Russia's Putin meets Syrian foreign minister in Moscow

Dubai Eye3 days ago
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Syria's foreign minister Asaad al-Shibani in Moscow, the first visit by a top official from Syria's new government.
Lavrov said Moscow would like Syria's new President Ahmed al-Sharaa to attend a summit between Russia and Arab League member states in Moscow in October. "Of course, we hope that President al-Sharaa will be able to take part in the first Russia-Arab League summit, which is scheduled for October 15," Lavrov said.
Moscow has attempted to preserve ties with Syria's new authorities, including offering Damascus diplomatic support over Israeli strikes on Syrian territory.
Putin received Shibani and his accompanying delegation at the Kremlin, Syria's state news agency SANA reported without providing further details on the meeting.
At a joint news conference, Shibani said his trip to Moscow was intended "to start a necessary discussion ... based on the lessons of the past, to formulate the future".
He said he had agreed with Lavrov on establishing two committees tasked with re-evaluating past agreements between Syria and Russia.
"There are many opportunities for a united strong Syria, we hope Russia stands with us on this pathway," Shibani said.
Lavrov thanked Syrian authorities for ensuring the security of two Russian bases in the country, where Moscow continues to maintain a presence, as well as backing the removal of sanctions on Syria.

More than 22,000 aid trucks blocked by Israel, says Gaza media office

The Government Media Office in Gaza said that there are "more than 22,000 humanitarian aid trucks currently parked at the Gaza Strip crossing gates," blocked by Israel. 'The Israeli occupation is deliberately preventing their entry as part of a systematic policy of engineering starvation, siege, and chaos,' the office said in a statement, adding that most of the trucks belong to the UN and international organisations and various entities. Describing the situation as a 'full-fledged war crime', the media office said blocking the humanitarian aid violates international law and contributes to what it called the ongoing crime of genocide against the people of Gaza.. 'We hold the Israeli occupation, along with the states involved through silence or complicity, fully responsible for the worsening humanitarian catastrophe,' the statement added.

Former Israeli military chiefs call for immediate end to Gaza war

Eleven former senior Israeli military and security officials, including former chiefs of staff, have called for an immediate end to Israel's war on Gaza, warning that Israel is facing 'the dawn of defeat.' In a joint video statement, they said Israel had turned legitimate self-defence into a strategic deadlock and was now at risk of losing the gains it had achieved. They added that the army is 'stuck' in Gaza and that there has been no progress in negotiations to secure the release of captives held in the territory.

Australia pledges additional $20 million in aid for Gaza

Australia announced today that it is making a further humanitarian contribution of $20 million in response to "the catastrophe in Gaza." The additional donation will support organisations with the scale and capacity to respond quickly, delivering food, medical supplies for field hospitals, and other lifesaving support to women and children in Gaza, a statement shared by Senator Penny Wong said. The latest contribution brings the total donation from the Australian Government to more than $130 million to support civilians in Gaza and Lebanon since 7 October 2023. "Australia has consistently been part of the international call on Israel to allow a full and immediate resumption of aid into Gaza, in line with the binding orders of the International Court of Justice," the statement read, as it called for "the suffering and starvation of civilians in Gaza" to end. "Australia will continue to work with the international community towards an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages and a two-state solution — the only path to enduring peace and security for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples."
