Amazon loses AWS generative AI boss as tech talent shuffle heats up
SAN FRANCISCO:
Amazon
's AWS recently lost its vice president overseeing generative artificial intelligence development, as the competition for talent heats up.
Vasi Philomin
told Reuters in an email that he left Amazon for another company, without providing specifics. A company spokesperson confirmed that Philomin had recently left after eight years with Amazon. Philomin helped lead
generative AI
efforts and product strategy, and oversaw foundation models known as Amazon Titan.
The spokesperson said Rajesh Sheth, a vice president previously overseeing Amazon Elastic Block Store, had assumed some of Philomin's responsibilities.
In his biography, Philomin said he also helped create and lead
Amazon Bedrock
, a hub for using multiple AI models and one of AWS's premier products in its battle for AI supremacy. He was a frequent speaker at AWS events, including Amazon's annual cloud computing conference in Las Vegas.
Amazon is working to bolster its reputation in AI development, after rivals like OpenAI, and Google have taken an early lead, particularly with consumer-focused models.
The Seattle-based online retailer and technology powerhouse has invested $8 billion in AI startup Anthropic and integrated its Claude software into its own products including a new revamped version of voice assistant Alexa that it's rolling out to customers this year.
In December, Amazon introduced its Nova AI models which provide for text, video and image generation. Earlier this year, it added to the lineup with a version called Sonic that can more readily produce natural-sounding speech.
Companies are employing creative techniques to hire top AI talent, including using sports industry data analysis to help identify undiscovered talent, Reuters reported last month. As a result, compensation has skyrocketed for some.
However, as Amazon races to produce more advanced AI, it said it expects its own success will lead to fewer corporate jobs, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jassy last week. Job growth limits will be driven in particular by so-called agentic AI, which can perform tasks with minimal or even no additional input from people.
"As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote.

US man laments decline of local shops in America, praises Europe's walkable street culture. Video
A US-based content creator named Adam, known as 'trvlking' on Instagram, has sparked an online discussion after posting a video lamenting the disappearance of locally-owned shops in America. In a viral video, a US man lamented the decline of mom-and-pop shops in America.(Instagram/trvlking) (Also read: 'Magnets abroad feel stronger': Indian man in Sweden on why NRIs don't return) In the video, Adam remarks, 'America has lost the art of the mom-and-pop shop. In America, when you want coffee, you go to Starbucks. If you want art supplies, you go to Walmart. If you want fruit and vegetables, you probably also go to Walmart. But here in Europe and other places too, you have these small locally-owned shops for almost anything you can think of.' Europe's walkable variety, America's corporate sprawl He walks through a street, pointing to different niche shops — 'Fruit and vegetables here. A store for everything plastic. And your local coffee shop.' He adds, 'The craziest part is that almost all of these things are usually within a 10 or 15-minute walk. The American mind cannot comprehend this.' Take a look here at the clip: Caption fuels nostalgia for lost neighbourhood culture In the caption of his post, Adam expands on his sentiment: 'America has lost the art of the mom and pop shop. I love being able to walk five minutes to a little store that sells exactly what I'm looking for, and being greeted by a nice person who's been running the store for probably 40 years. It just adds depth to your life that you can't get when your main place of shopping is Walmart.' Internet reacts Though the video has attracted nearly 4,000 views and several reactions. One user recalled, 'I remember thinking the exact same thing when I visited England for the first time. I saw a speaker music store, a vacuum shop, and a tailor all on the same street.' Another pointed the finger at big companies, saying, 'Corporations are 100 percent to blame.' One user simply wrote, 'It's called community. America, unfortunately, has lost its value and respect for community.' Another added, 'True. America talks a big game on small business, but small businesses get short confession.' A commenter shared, 'I already left and I don't plan on ever going back!' to which Adam replied with a brief, 'Nice.'

Grok Imagine goes live on Elon Musk's X platform
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has officially rolled out Grok Imagine, a text-to-video generation tool integrated within the X platform (formerly Twitter). The feature, which was previously being tested with a limited group of users, is now more widely accessible. According to Musk, users can update their X app and request access to the waitlist by navigating to the 'Grok' section in settings and selecting 'Imagine.' 'Grok Imagine is still in early beta, so will improve almost every day,' Musk wrote in a post on X, adding that real-time improvements are expected as the model scales. Grok Imagine allows users to generate videos and still images from text prompts, with videos of up to six minutes in duration. In addition, it can animate static images into moving visuals with synchronized sound, offering creators a more seamless workflow without needing external tools or software. Early users have compared the feature to Twitter's Vine, the once-popular short-form video app that was discontinued in 2017. However, Grok Imagine appears to be aimed at much broader use cases—including entertainment, education, and meme culture—leveraging generative AI for creative expression. The feature is available both via the standalone Grok app and within the main X platform. According to a post by the official Grok handle, full public rollout is expected in phases beginning October 2025. The launch follows xAI's recent disclosure that it is also working on a kid-friendly version of its Grok chatbot, suggesting the company is eyeing wider demographic adoption as it refines its AI capabilities. Meanwhile, xAI is in the process of preparing a fresh funding round, which could value the company between $170 billion and $200 billion, according to a July 12 Reuters report. The company expects to generate over $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, as per financial projections shared by Morgan Stanley and reported by Bloomberg in June. With Grok Imagine now live, Musk appears to be positioning X as not just a social media platform but an AI-powered content engine, blending user-generated media with proprietary infrastructure and models built by xAI.
