Aussie actress' desperate move after son, 13, takes own life

Perth Now26-05-2025
Australian actress Clare McCann has revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding her 13-year-old son's sudden death — and issued a plea for urgent help to preserve his body.
McCann says her 'worst nightmare' was realised when Atreyu died on Friday after months of relentless bullying at NSW public school.
'It breaks my heart beyond what words can compare to share that in a moment of unbearable pain Atreyu took his own life,' she wrote in a post on social media.
'This was not his fault. He was let down by the schooling system as he suffered horrendous amounts of bullying.
'Now I humbly beg of you to help me preserve his life and help me fight against this inhumane landslide of child suicides caused by unchecked bullying by schools and teachers.' Clare McCann with her son Artreyu. She says he was relentlessly bullied at a NSW public school. Credit: Instagram
McCann, who rose to public attention in Channel [V] shows Blog Party and Clublife, describes herself as an actress/writer/director and is an organiser of the Sydney International Women's Film Festival.
A friend of McCann's, Scarlett Wathen, has now launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $300,000 to cryopreserve Atreyu's body.
At the time of publishing it had raised just under $3000.

McCann wrote that Atreyu's body would need to be cryopreserved within the next seven days, otherwise 'the opportunity for him to live again will be lost forever'.
'We only have one chance left to cryogenically preserve his body within the next 7 days. If we miss this window, we lose the chance for any future revival that science may offer. This is about hope and justice. Refusing to let my son's story end in silence,' she wrote on the GoFundMe page.
She said the money would go towards immediate cryopreservation and legal transportation, medical and legal services for the procedure and a trust in his name to protect his legacy. Clare McCann with her son Artreyu at the Sydney Women's International Film Festival. Credit: Instagram
McCann said any money raised above her target would go towards a national campaign for anti-bullying education and reform, legal action and support for other families 'impacted by systemic negligence'.
'I had begged the school, the Department of Education, and Children's Services to intervene. I have medical records, psychologist reports, a formal PTSD diagnosis from his doctor, and emails proving I raised the alarm repeatedly. But nothing was done. No one stepped in. And now, my beautiful boy is gone.'
She vowed to use her public platform to ensure what happened to her son would never happen again.

Hailey Bieber suffering skin problems due to 'stress'

Hailey Bieber has been suffering from a "flare up" of perioral dermatitis. The Rhode founder has revealed she often gets a bout of the skin rash when she's tired or stressed or has used the wrong products on her skin and she's now shared the "minimal" steps she uses to calm it down. In a post on Instagram, she shared a picture of the rash around her mouth and wrote: "Always flares up when I'm traveling a lot, sleep deprived, hormones, the wrong SPF, new products, stress." Hailey went on to explain how she calms her skin down again using prescription medication and products from her Rhode beauty range. She added: "What I use when I have a flare: so minimal. Rinse my face with water, prescription Azelaic, Hypochlorous acid, Clindamycin, Glazing Milk." Hailey recently sold her Rhode brand to e.l.f. Beauty in a deal estimated to be worth up to $1 billion, but she'll stay on as chief creative officer and head of innovation as well as acting as a consultant to e.l.f. Beauty. The influencer recently insisted the arrangement will help her take the products to a whole new level and expand across the world. She told Glamour magazine: "When you're launching a brand, you're just so focused on what's right in front of you at the time. "And of course, you always have really big dreams and really big goals for it. This is definitely one of those things being realised. I could have never anticipated that it would happen at this exact time ... "I'm super excited ... I'll be the chief creative officer and head of innovation at Rhode and advisor to Elf Beauty. "I feel like at this very moment in time, my vision has not been more clear to me. I want to expand globally, and I have so many more dreams and goals that I want to be realised. And I really believe that Elf is going to help us get there." When asked if there will ever be a "crossover collection" between Rhode and e.l.f. Cosmetics, she replied: "Well, that'll depend on our strategic advisor ... "I'm always open to seeing how we can innovate together. I mean, that is the whole point of all of this. I would say nothing's off the table."

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long 'become parents'

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long have reportedly become parents for the first time. The Blue Crush star and the 47-year-old actor have welcomed a baby girl into the world via a surrogate, sources told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column. A spokesperson for the couple - who married in 2023, a year after they went public with their romance - has yet to comment on the happy news. Justin previously hinted at planning a family with Kate, 42, in a touching post for her birthday last year. He wrote in part: "One day our kids might ask me 'Dad, why did you write sappy things about Mom on that old Instagram app? The one you won't let us use?' And I'll say 'Well, _____, because there are a lot of poisonous things on the Internet but your mom always inspires me to put good things into the world. Besides, i know reading those old posts touched her and made her smile. And I've been so blessed to have experienced so many fun, wondrous things in this life - things for which I'll never be able to properly express my gratitude - but of all those joys, touching your Mom and making her smile are my favorites.' "They might say 'Ew!' Or 'Why?' "And I'd say 'Because she completed all of your Dad's favorite love songs. Even ones he hadn't thought about since he was a kid. Like the theme song of a TV show he loved called FAMILY TIES. There was a line in that song that went like this "…and there ain't no nothin' we can't love each other through…" And one year, when she was 40, your Mom completed that song too. She's simply the best' (sic)" Just as the couple didn't announce they were expecting a baby, it only emerged they had married when Justin referred to Kate as his wife in May 2023, a month after they had announced their engagement. Speaking on his Life is Short podcast, he recalled his time in Bulgaria working on Barbarian and said: "I was there while I was like really falling in love with my now-wife. "She came to visit and I had never been comfortable with… set visits. I like to separating the relationship... "But, yeah, I loved having her there and we just had the most magical time... It helped me having her there. She'd help me with scenes. It was the best."

‘Giving racism': Internet unleashes on Aussie's Japan post

An Australian influencer and business owner has been grilled amid claims of cultural appropriation during her holiday to Japan. The internet unleashed at All For Mimi founder Sophia Begg, known online as Sopha Dopha, after she posted a series of photos capturing her first day in Tokyo to her Instagram. Begg can be seen posing against a vending machine sporting a polka dot bandana, bright pink shorts and a baggy white t-shirt branded with Japanese characters 'Suki' which translates to 'like' or 'love.' Subsequent photos show Begg and her two friends, including employee Bailey, indulging in matcha and ramen while exploring the city. The 21-year old's post also featured Chinese rapper SKAI ISYOURGOD's song Blueprint Supreme playing over the top. With a following of more than 660,000 on the platform, critics were quick to unload on the TikTok star. Sophia Begg in Tokyo, Japan. Credit: Instagram @sophadophaa_ 'This honestly reflects white privilege on another level… being able to pick and choose parts of someone else's culture for aesthetic without needing to understand or respect it. Meanwhile, we as Asians grow up being shamed or mocked for these same things. It's not just a song or a vibe, it's a lived culture, and treating it like a trend is harmful,' one person wrote. 'Look good but it's giving racism,' said another. A third added: 'The casual racism is sending me LMAO.' Many of the people unhappy with Begg's upload took issue with the song choice given it is in Mandarin and is not by a Japanese musician. 'Girl I love you but please the song isn't even in Japanese,' 'You should change the song or remove it. its not even Japanese,' Despite calls for the influencer to remove the audio from the post, Begg has not taken it down or responded to the negative comments.
