DPM Ahmad Zahid Pushes To Boost Malaysia-NZ Cooperation On Disaster Management

WELLINGTON, July 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and New Zealand have the potential to strengthen cooperation in disaster management through a more holistic approach, following Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's visit to the National Crisis Management Centre here today.
The visit to the centre, also known as the Beehive Bunker, is seen as opening a new chapter in emergency and disaster management collaboration between the two countries.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Central Disaster Management Committee chairman, said the visit was not merely symbolic but aimed at expanding strategic cooperation encompassing information sharing, education, and disaster safety training, including rescue simulations and disaster victim logistics management.
'Malaysia and New Zealand have long enjoyed cooperation in various fields, but disaster management remains an area with great potential to be enhanced bilaterally,' he told reporters here.
He also welcomed the progress in ongoing negotiations between the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency, which are working towards finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future.
'I am confident this effort will serve as a landmark for more coordinated, structured and effective cooperation between the two countries, for the safety of the people and stronger regional preparedness,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid's visit to the Beehive Bunker, located within the New Zealand Parliament building, was joined by an official delegation and senior Malaysian government officials.
The Deputy Prime Minister will conclude his five-day working visit to New Zealand and depart for Kuala Lumpur on Friday (July 18).

This is not the Islamic way,' he said. Malaysia, Singapore To Strengthen Ties In Govtech, Housing And Public Sector Reform
PUTRAJAYA, July 20 (Bernama) – Malaysia and Singapore are now exploring strategic cooperation in three main areas – GovTech, public housing and public sector reform – to strengthen public service delivery. Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said these were the main areas of collaboration identified during his three-day official working visit to Singapore beginning Friday (July 18). 'We want to learn from Singapore. Firstly, in regard to GovTech, as they have already implemented it, while we are in the process of launching our own. 'Secondly, their affordable housing through the Singapore Housing Board. And thirdly, we want to learn about reforms in the public service,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Sports Carnival of the Alumni Association of MRSM Malaysia (ANSARA Malaysia) here today. Shamsul Azri said Singapore welcomed the cooperation and exchange of best practices between the two countries to improve the quality of public service. 'Singapore welcomed our proposals… we also had sessions with them to discuss strategic cooperation between the Malaysian government and the Singaporean government,' he added. Earlier, in his speech, he urged Malaysians to adopt a healthy lifestyle through sports and good nutrition. Citing Singapore as an example, he said their average life expectancy is 84 years, compared to about 73 to 74 years in Malaysia.
