Ahsan opens Int'l Centre of Excellence for Seerah Studies
Addressing the audience as chief guest, the minister described the occasion as a historic milestone not only for academia but for the intellectual and moral future of Pakistan and the wider Muslim Ummah. He emphasised that the establishment of the Centre is more than a scholarly endeavour it marks the beginning of a movement to reclaim the ethical, spiritual, and intellectual leadership of Islam in today's complex world.
Highlighting the universal relevance of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) life, the minister said that the Prophet's(PBUH) teachings serve as a complete code of conduct encompassing personal behaviour, justice, governance, tolerance, social harmony, and global peace. He underlined the need to draw from this Prophetic model at a time when the world is grappling with polarisation, materialism, and moral confusion.
The minister linked the initiative to the broader national vision, URAAN Pakistan, which aspires to transform Pakistan into a $3 trillion economy by 2047. He stated that this transformation must be rooted in moral clarity and the Prophet's (PBUH) ethical teachings, forming the foundation for the 5Es framework — Exports, Energy, E-Pakistan, Environment, and Equity. According to him, the values of truth in commerce, justice in energy distribution, transparency in governance, care for the environment, and inclusion of the marginalized are inspired directly by the Seerah.
Addressing the issue of national unity and interfaith harmony, Iqbal stressed that Pakistan's strength lies in its diversity. He warned against the dangers posed by sectarianism, extremism, and divisive foreign agendas, advocating for a return to the pluralistic and inclusive model exemplified by the Prophet (PBUH) through the Mithaq-e-Madina — the world's first pluralistic constitution. He called for youth education based on academic inquiry, ethical leadership, and public discourse rooted in Prophetic (PBUH) values.
The minister urged the Centre to become a hub for countering extremism and misinformation, linking the Seerah's guidance to contemporary challenges such as climate change, gender equity, economic justice, and knowledge-based development. He stated that globally, the prophetic message offers answers to issues like war, discrimination, and systemic injustice, and that Pakistan has a duty to promote peace through character, dialogue, and research not force.
Concluding his address, Iqbal congratulated the International Islamic University, the Higher Education Commission, and all contributors to the initiative. He expressed the hope that the Centre would serve as a beacon of peace, wisdom, and academic excellence for generations. He called upon scholars and students to rise to the sacred responsibility of embodying and promoting the Seerah not only as a subject of study but as a guiding force for national and global transformation.

Formation of commission to probe blasphemy cases: IHC suspends single bench's order
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC), Thursday, suspended a single bench's order of directing the government to constitute a commission within 30 days to probe blasphemy cases. A division bench comprising Justice Khadim Hussain and Justice Azam Khan issued the order in an Intra Court Appeal (ICA) filed by Rao Abdul Rahim advocate against the decision of Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan. In the ICA, the petitioner urged the court to declare the single-bench decision null and void, and to dismiss the original petition as inadmissible. He maintained that the single bench exercised suo motu powers and issued directions without hearing the respondents' version. The petitioner further argued that the original petitioners had multiple legal forums available to them, including trial courts, but chose not to approach them. He said that forming a commission to probe criminal allegations contradicts established legal procedures and precedents set by the higher courts. In this connection, Justice Ejaz directed the federal government to constitute a commission within 30 days to probe blasphemy cases. He issued the directions in petitions filed by the victim families seeking formation of judicial commission to investigate the cases. The bench directed the federal government to form a commission within 30 days to investigate blasphemy cases. It also directed that the commission formed by the federal government must complete its proceedings within four months. In this matter, the victim families, represented by advocates Abid Saqi and Usman Warraich, had petitioned the high court for the formation of a judicial commission. They mentioned a report by the Punjab Special Branch titled 'The Blasphemy Business'. The report alleged that a suspicious gang had been entrapping youth in blasphemy cases and extorting money from them after filing complaints with the FIA in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The petitioners asserted that this gang is the complainant in nearly 90 per cent of blasphemy cases registered by the FIA. It added that operating under the name 'Legal Commission on Blasphemy,' the group is said to be consisted of both men and women targeting poor and lower-middle-class Muslim families. They revealed that a concerning pattern emerges in the FIRs: out of over 400 alleged victims, 70 per cent are young men and women in their twenties or younger while many of the victims are professionals, including engineers, Hafiz-e-Quran, and degree holders in various fields. They further said that they had approached the federal government with a formal request dated August 4, 2024, seeking the formation of an inquiry commission on the Special Branch's report. Merged districts in KP: PM reiterates commitment to establishing peace and security
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reiterated the government's commitment to establishing peace and security in the merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), stating that ensuring stability in the region remains a top national priority. He was speaking at a jirga convened at the Prime Minister's House, which was attended by a delegation led by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The meeting focused on issues concerning law and order, governance, and development in the merged districts. In a key announcement, Sharif said that the government had decided to restore educational quotas for students from the merged districts in medical and engineering institutions. The announcement was met with appreciation by tribal elders, who described it as a significant step towards equitable access to higher education. 'It gives me great pleasure to host you today,' Sharif said while addressing the delegation. 'The tribal areas are steeped in history and tradition. The people of these regions have rendered unmatched sacrifices for the cause of national peace and security.' Sharif paid tribute to the military, police, and law enforcement agencies for their role in combating terrorism. 'Their unwavering resolve continues to be a source of strength for the country,' he remarked. Calling for unity across the political and religious spectrum, the prime minister urged all stakeholders to contribute to making Pakistan a peaceful and stable state. Outlining his government's development priorities, Sharif said a special focus was being placed on improving education, healthcare, skills training, and employment opportunities, particularly for youth in the merged districts. He announced that this year's federal development budget included allocations for the upgrading of the FATA University and improvements in police infrastructure. The prime minister also directed the expansion of the federal committee on merged districts, chaired by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and Frontier Regions, Amir Muqam. The committee will now include representation from tribal elders to ensure inclusive decision making. The visiting delegation expressed appreciation for the government's efforts and welcomed the restoration of quotas and the expanded mandate of the committee. They also lauded the armed forces for their 'strategic and courageous' response during recent tensions with India. Concluding the meeting, Sharif assured the tribal elders of continued engagement and regular consultative sessions aimed at addressing the region's socio-economic challenges. PM restores tribal quota in universities
Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday assured that the federal government was taking all possible steps for the economic development of the merged districts and welfare of its people. He was speaking to a delegation of tribal elders of the merged districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa led by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) President Maulana Fazlur Rehman who visited the Prime Minister's House. The jirga discussed in detail the improvement of public order in the merged districts and the construction and development of these areas. While welcoming the delegation, the prime minister announced the restoration of the quota of the merged districts in medical colleges and engineering universities. The tribal elders welcomed the decision, expressing happiness over restoration of the quota. The prime minister said, "I am very happy to host the tribal elders at the Prime Minister House today." During conversation with the delegation, he said, "You belong to those areas of Pakistan that are the guardians of the glorious historical heritage and traditions." "Tribes have always made immense sacrifices for the security and peace of Pakistan," he said adding, "Establishment of law and order in the merged districts is the top priority of the government." He said Pakistan's security forces, police and law enforcement agencies were embracing martyrdom while fighting bravely against terrorists. He urged that leaders of all schools of thought will have to play their role together to make Pakistan a cradle of peace. "Providing equal and best opportunities for education, health, skills and employment to the people of the merged tribal districts, especially the youth, is our priority," he stressed. He said "The federal government has allocated a huge amount in this year's development budget for the improvement of FATA University and police infrastructure in the merged districts." He directed to expand the scope of the committee established under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and Frontier Regions Engineer Amir Muqam on the issues of the merged districts. "Tribal elders of merged districts are also being represented in this committee," he noted. The delegation expressed gratitude for expanding the scope of the committee, giving representation to tribal elders and for restoration of quota of merged districts in medical colleges and engineering universities. The delegation paid tribute to the courageous strategy of Pakistan Army during the recent Pakistan-India conflict and for giving a befitting reply to the Indian aggression. The delegation thanked the prime minister for the consultative session regarding peace and order, development and prosperity in the merged districts. During the meeting, the prime minister especially thanked World Bank President Ajay Banga and former Country Director for Pakistan Najy Benhassine for their pivotal role in advancing the new Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for Pakistan. He appreciated the strategic role of the CPF in supporting Pakistan's development priorities, particularly in the areas of energy, human capital, climate change, and governance reforms. Arizona State University Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed the government's commitment to revolutionizing Pakistan's education sector through the integration of cutting-edge technology and global partnerships with the support of the Arizona State University. During a high-level meeting with a delegation from Arizona State University (ASU) led by Doug Becker, Founder and Chairman of Cintana Education held at the Prime Minister's Office, PM Shehbaz highlighted that aligning Pakistan's education system with international standards was a top government priority. The prime minister emphasized the need to modernize education and equip the country's youth with professional and technical skills essential for competing in global markets. "All government education policies are centered around creating employment opportunities for youth based on their professional capabilities," the Prime Minister stated. He praised the collaboration with Arizona State University as a transformative step, particularly the establishment of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Pakistan. "This partnership is a significant milestone. The NIT will serve as a world-class institution that trains Pakistani youth to compete globally," he said. The prime minister noted that the government has undertaken key reforms in the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) over the past year, making it a more efficient and effective institution. He directed that NAVTTC should now work closely with ASU to bring innovation to the vocational training sector. Discussions during the meeting focused on the operationalization of the NIT, set to commence this year. Doug Becker assured full support from ASU in providing resources and facilities to advance innovation in Pakistan's education system. At the conclusion of the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the operational launch of the National Institute of Technology.
