SSCVA ups Pierogi Fest sponsorship amid dustup with Hammond

The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority is giving Whiting's Pierogi Fest an extra helping of sponsorship dollars this year, but the gesture likely won't smooth over bad feelings between the SSCVA and the City of Hammond.
The SSCVA board at its Wednesday meeting voted 10-0 to give Pierogi Fest a $10,000 sponsorship after finding an extra $5,000 in its budget. The SSCVA in April voted to give the wildly popular festival $5,000 while giving Festival of the Lakes $15,000, the Post-Tribune previously reported.
During discussion before the vote, Board Member Bernie Grisolia said that Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. had given back the $15,000 for Festival of the Lakes and wants to see it given to Pierogi Fest. McDermott did that because 'there were hurt feelings between Whiting and Hammond' over the money, Grisolia said.
'If we take the $15,000 back, we'll be giving Pierogi Fest $25,000,' SSCVA Board President Andy Qunell said.
'Are we not sponsors for Festival of the Lakes, then?' asked Board Member Chris Cash, who's the general manager for the Ramada Conference Center in North Hammond. 'I don't want people to think we're not supporting Festival of the Lakes.'
Qunell then moved to approve the $10,000 for Pierogi Fest and said Hammond should still accept some of the money and that he would call McDermott even though the SSCVA's relationship with him is 'strained right now.' SSCVA Treasurer Matt Malony added that Qunell should make clear it the SSCVA never intended to slight Whiting.
McDermott, however, told the Post-Tribune on Wednesday that Qunell's effort would be a 'loaded proposition.'
'This whole thing was botched, completely mishandled from the beginning,' McDermott said. 'I love Whiting, and we never wanted to take any sort of money away from them, so (SSCVA) can keep the money.
'We pay $2.5 million to the CVA each year — that's 50% of their budget — and they want to give us $15,000? That's a pretty crappy return.'
This year's smaller SSCVA sponsorships for the two prompted President and CEO Phil Taillon in April to consider changing the process by which festivals asked for sponsorships, the Post-Tribune reported. Having previously paid $20,000 for a high-level Festival of the Lakes sponsorship, the organization's vote to give $10,000 to it this year and $5,000 to Pierogi Fest was directly tied to the SSCVA's lawsuit between it and former President and CEO Speros Batistatos.
Grisolia at that meeting asked whether the board would consider giving Festival of the Lakes $15,000 since $10,000 is 'kind of an insult.' Chief Financial Officer Nicole Wolverton concurred with Taillon that the money isn't there right now.
In other business, CFO Nicole Wolverton said the SSCVA collected $398,000 of Innkeeper's tax for March, about $33,000 less than last year. So far, the SSCVA has collected $1.6 million, or $100,000 less year-to-date. Some of the lower revenues, at least on Hammond's end, could be attributed to a function BP Whiting hosted where many of their contractors were staying in hotels, Cash said; as such, revenues are 'hard to make up' at the start of the year. But Taillon wasn't too concerned yet.
'Tourism is down all over, so to be where we're at right now isn't a bad place,' he said.

It really is a unique taste, an all-beef hot dog, natural tasting … it's simple, but it's delicious. Advertisement Q: How would you describe your mentality on game day? A: I'm hungry. That's all it is. I'm staying hungry no matter what. I'm expecting to eat uncomfortable and bloated and I'm ignoring whatever feelings it takes to get there. Q: Right before the first at bite, what is going through your gut? A: I think the hardest part of the contest is the first one. Stay calm, don't try to swallow the hot dogs whole. My first instinct is to try to swallow whole, which is not a good thing, your muscles are not stretched out yet, I don't want to cough, right? Stay calm, take a normal bite and work into the rhythm, which is hard. Sometimes I over-attack the food, my muscles aren't ready to work for me right away. This guy likes to work out so he's gonna be pushing himself really hard. If I let myself mess up, he's the only one that could really catch me. Advertisement Q: Do you feel any pressure? A: I wouldn't say pressure, it's more of support. Every once in a while you get a little bit of pressure from people who are betting. Like, 'Oh, you need to get this Over.' I'm like, 'Oh my god, the Over's really high this year (laugh).' Q: What is the Over? Advertisement A: I think some people are putting the Over at 74, or 72. That's high. Even though the record's 76, it's gonna be hard for me to push myself. I know like minute six if I have a chance at the record. I have a tendency to get lazy if I don't think I can get the record. I would love to get the Over. I'm gonna really try hard. Q: Which one has been your sweetest victory? A: The first one was really, really amazing. Beating [Takeru] Kobayashi for the first time was awesome. I go back three years ago, I had a broken leg, I had a cast on, and like 2 ¹/₂ weeks before my mom passed away, and less than a week later my dog died. And during the contest there was like a protestor who got in front of me — everything was going wrong that year. It was like **** the ***** worst year, I was still able to get it done. Q: After the competition, do you actually have dinner that night? A: No, no, usually I'm in bed. Sometimes I'm going for a walk if I get up from sleeping. If I can, maybe some yogurt, maybe a little salad. I don't really have much until the next day. AP Q: How about the sickest you ever got? Advertisement A: Oh my god, there's been a couple of times. When I talk about heat, it's because of those hot days. If I'm devastated before the contest, I can tell like right after if the food's not settling and if my body's gonna reject it. The only way you get better is by getting your body to accept it. That's something I don't necessarily practice for is to be dehydrated. I want to say 2006 was probably my worst time getting sick. But it's been a while. Q: What would you say about the New York sports crowd at Coney Island and you being a fan favorite? A: The audience at Coney Island, you feel like you're at the center of the world. It really feels amazing. There's energy, electricity like no other place. Q: What is your mindset the night before the competition? Advertisement A: Stay calm. I usually watch some old practices, almost kind of simulated contests just swallowing air, go through the motions. Advertisement Q: You drink a concoction of liquids the night before? A: There's aloe vera juice and things to make sure that I'm hydrated, and also empty, I'm finishing up my cleanse. Q: I read that you drink milk to stretch out your stomach. A: I do drink milk like a big baby. I'm a believer that if your body can digest milk, it's great for you. Every now and then I'll drink half a gallon of milk in the morning with some water. That's a nice healthy stretch. Advertisement Q: What is the last food you eat the night before? A: The day before I usually have to eat a hot dog at the weigh-in. Before that, I usually have some eggs for breakfast. Maybe a little bit of protein, like protein shake that day. He's kind of the boss, and I kind of do what I'm told. Q: What's the purpose of the weigh-in? A: Competitive eaters, we're sizing each other up. Q: When you say sizing each other up, what do you mean? A: We're friends, but we also talk trash … we're posturing (laugh). I like the weigh-in because it's my last chance to really get in the other eater's heads a little bit. Q: What makes you so good about psyching the other opponents out? A: I don't know … I convince myself that there's only one outcome this contest. Once I think they can see that I'm convinced, and the audience is convinced, it's really hard for them to overcome. Paul Martinka for NY Post Q: What are the strengths of your game? A: I love to eat. I'm a natural eater. It's one of the hardest things for me to control. I need to make sure that I control my eating so that I'm not heavy. I'm competitive, that's another strength. I'm really good at problem solving. Where a lot of athletes, they have coaches, competitive eaters don't have coaches. It's all kind of self-taught. I had to figure things out trial and error. It's been a really good combination being able to push myself. Q: Any area you need to improve that you consider a weakness? A: I wish I liked to work out (laugh). My cardiovascular, I've noticed it more and more as I'm getting older, where I'm slowing down not because I'm full, it's because I haven't been hitting the gym like I should. If I'm running more, if I'm cycling more, if I'm lifting weights more, I can push my body harder. I'm so jealous of people that love to get up early and work every day. That's life. Some people don't like the feeling of being bloated after eating, and I don't mind that. I hate running, even though I have great respect for it. Q: Do you like it hot on July Fourth? A: No, I don't like it hot, Jesus! Oh my god, I'm nervous, I've been seeing the weather you guys are having over there, and I'm like, 'Dang it.' The last time I made a record it was 75 degrees, and it was like a perfect day. When it's warmer, my body just runs out of steam towards the end. I'm really hoping a cold front comes in. And you know whatever happens, I'm gonna eat like a beast. Q: When do you get to New York? She loves to cook, and she's great. I'm super, super lucky. It worked out perfect. Q: How did you meet her? A: I was at a bar drinking in San Francisco and this guy sees me from outside as he's walking by, and he comes in and starts talking to me. And we were talking for like 20 minutes and then all of a sudden the girl and a dog come in — 'Hey, you left me outside.' So I was like, 'You left her outside?' The guy was an idiot. So then I went out and took a picture with her, and met the dog, Zeus, and a year later we matched on Tinder. Q: How does she feel about your career? A: She knows I love it a lot (laugh). She knows it's me. When I'm in training, we do all these little low-carb meals. … She has all these homemade salad dressings. She's awesome. She works with my crazy diet so that I can keep doing it. Q: Any marriage plans? A: It'll happen. We're both in our 40s. No children, we just got dogs, and a garden. Eventually just get a little courthouse wedding and have a party maybe. Q: Did you watch the event last year, when you were banned because of a sponsorship conflict? A: Yeah, I watched it. I told people I didn't, but I watched it (laugh). It was hard, but it was good practice 'cause I know one of these days I'm gonna be either older or somebody's gonna be beating me, and I'm gonna have to retire. It was good practice for when that day comes. It made me appreciate that … if I can do it, I want to be there. Q: As you've gotten older, have you made any changes to your training? A: Definitely, I train a little bit less. It takes me a little more time to get back to my normal weight. When I was younger, I could just be a beast, like practicing every third day. Now it's like every five or six days, maybe even a week between them. It takes a little more time to recover. You gotta find a way to do it. There's no other option. Q: Do you eat hot dogs when you're not competing? A: Yeah! Baseball games, and at home. Q: What is the biggest adversity you had to overcome? A: I remember when I had that broken leg. He had everybody convinced that he was special. I refused to believe it. That's why it's so important for me to convince myself and convince the other people. A: I can't guarantee it, but I can guarantee it's gonna be really, really hard for somebody to beat me. If somebody beats me, they will have had to earn it. Flora Johnson, a prolific Chicago journalist remembered as ‘bohemian' and ‘eccentric', dies

Flora Johnson was a highly visible and prolific feature writer and editor for magazines and newspapers in Chicago for more than two decades. Johnson began with the Chicago Seed underground newspaper and went on to reporting and editing positions at Chicago magazine, the Chicago Reader, the now-defunct American Medical News and the short-lived Chicago Times magazine. She also contributed freelance articles to the Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. 'Flora was a bohemian — creative, open-minded and eccentric, which made her a very effective advocate for American Medical News,' said Brian McCormick, a former reporter and editor at American Medical News. 'It also made her a damned good editor.' Johnson, 76, died of heart disease May 30 at Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, according to a friend, Susan Stevenson. Johnson had lived in Nova Scotia since 2002, and formerly resided in the Albany Park neighborhood and in Redmond, Washington. Born Flora Cordis Johnson in Kingsville, Texas, Johnson moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University. Johnson was part of Chicago's underground media scene, starting in her early 20s. She wrote for the Chicago Seed and was also a program host for an underground broadcast version, called Radio Free Chicago. Johnson then co-founded Chicago 606 magazine, a small publication that lasted for just five issues. Johnson had hoped that Chicago 606 would be the successor to the Chicago Seed. 'Flora's presence at the Seed contributed to empowering women in alternative journalism and politics,' said retired Northwestern University journalism professor Abe Peck, who was the Seed's editor from the late 1960s until 1970. 'She was a feisty countercultural feminist, working alongside men but not shy about kicking macho butt.' Johnson was hired in 1973 as a staff reporter at the Chicagoan magazine during one of several reboots of the Chicagoan, a magazine whose nameplate had its origins in the 1920s. In the first issue of the magazine's short-lived incarnation of the 1970s, Johnson wrote an article about Chicago supermarkets. A year later, she profiled then-Chicago Today reporter and future comedy writer Bruce Vilanch for the August 1974 issue. From 1974 until 1977, Johnson was a staff writer for Chicago magazine, a successor to the Chicagoan. In 1976, she wrote a piece for the magazine about which constituencies would be disadvantaged by the revitalization of the Uptown neighborhood. Even amid full-time jobs, Johnson was a steady freelance writer for other publications as well, including Student Lawyer magazine and the Sun-Times. In October 1974, she wrote a review for the Sun-Times on a book about flight attendants, 'Sex Objects in the Sky,' that Chicago Journalism Review co-founder Christopher Chandler had co-authored. A 1978 Student Lawyer article, which was reprinted in the Tribune, lamented what she judged to be some U.S. Supreme Court justices' poor writing. 'The justices give the impression that they are using words to mask their lack of anything to say,' Johnson wrote. In 1977, Johnson left Chicago magazine to join the Chicago Daily News for a brief spell, working first as a columnist co-authoring the gossip column 'Grapevine,' and then as a feature writer. She left the paper the same year and started a public relations firm with her future husband, Johnson Skelly & Associates. Clients included the nonprofit group Citizens for a Better Environment, for which she created a newsletter. In the 1970s and '80s, Johnson was a contributor to the Chicago Reader, writing about sometimes-controversial topics, including how public schools treat students of different races, medical ethics and the chemistry of the brain. 'She wrote some amazing things,' said Nina Sandlin, a longtime friend and occasional Reader contributor whose late husband, Lee, was a longtime writer for the Reader. 'She believed in thoughtful, incisive, gem-like writing. She challenged your thinking. She meant to be provocative in her articles and they were provocative.' Former Reader jazz critic Neil Tesser, a friend and onetime housemate, recalled Johnson's focus at the Reader being 'on the sciences, both physical and socially and I recall her reading various journals to turn up new or ongoing research in these fields in order to translate such developments for a general readership.' 'I was always impressed by the fact that she could handle that sort of weighty subject matter yet still craft wicked takedowns of political and legal bulls—,' Lesser said. 'She was a terrific writer, able to lift the essence of tricky subjects out of the jargon, and adept at turning phrases that would have pleased Frank Bruni.' In 1986, Johnson joined the staff of American Medical News, first as a one-day-a-week copy editor and outside contributions editor. She was hired full time as editor of a newly created feature section, called ADL, for the medical term 'activities of daily living.' Her role was eventually called special projects editor. 'Flora created the unique (ADL) section at American Medical News, which brought to life the day-to-day realities of physicians practicing medicine as well as telling vivid stories of physicians' lives, their interests and other activities,' said former American Medical News reporter Harris Meyer. 'Flora's ADL section brought something entirely new to the business-and policy-oriented weekly newspaper that was refreshing. She loved writers and pushed them in a loving way to do their best work. And she was fearless in letting stories go in directions that other editors would have been afraid to go.' Ronni Scheier, a friend and former American Medical News deputy editor, recalled Johnson's 'graceful, seemingly effortless' writing, 'no matter how complex or technical the content.' 'She laughed when I asked how it came so easily,' Scheier said. 'Her secret, she confided, was never to compose with her byline on the page. It was only as 'not Flora' that her words would flow, to be reunited later with their author.' In 1989, Johnson initially took vacation time from American Medical News to serve as the editor of Chicago Times, the highbrow but little-funded city magazine co-founded by Todd Fandell, a former Tribune assistant business editor and the former editor of Advertising Age magazine. Johnson then cut her time back at American Medical News to three days a week while moonlighting at Chicago Times. One of the Chicago Times stories Johnson edited was the award-winning 'Guilty Until Proven Innocent' — written by her friend Rob Warden — about penal injustice in Illinois. After overseeing five issues in a nine-month tenure at the helm, an exhausted Johnson returned to American Medical News full time in 1990, and Chicago Times folded several months later. McCormick recalled that one of his proudest moments at American Medical News was working on a special issue that Johnson coordinated regarding efforts to frame gun violence as a public health issue. '(That) concept … seemed radical to many readers in the early 1990s,' he said. In 1993, Johnson left American Medical News to move with her husband to a house they had built in 1987 in a rural area east of Redmond, Washington. While there, she undertook a career pivot away from journalism and took her interest in gardening to a new level, becoming an advocate for the use of native plants and running a garden design firm called Flower of the Heart Garden Design. While in Washington, Johnson authored two books, 'Gardening for Butterflies in Western Washington' and 'Gardening for Hummingbirds in Western Washington,' and she also wrote a regular column on wildlife gardening for the publication Northwest Garden News. Johnson left Washington in 2002 to move to Nova Scotia, where her parents had owned a farm. There were no immediate survivors. Johnson was twice married to noted video game designer Timothy Skelly. The couple divorced and then remarried. He died in 2020. A celebration of life service is being planned.
