Hotel guest told 'everything in mini fridge is free' but is astounded by contents

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Staying in a hotel can be a fun escape from the day to day grind - especially if your room comes with free perks like a stocked mini bar. One person's hotel stay quickly turned sour though
A hotel guest was excited after being told everything in the mini fridge in their room was completely 'free' only to be underwhelmed and disappointed by the contents on offer. Staying in a hotel typically means you'll be treated to a little bit of luxury - there's the added convenience of being close to popular hotspots, the comfort and freedom of a break away from the daily routine, and a host of facilities and amenities to take advantage of.

Some hotel rooms are equipped with a mini bar or fridge, usually packed with an array of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages and, oftentimes, snacks, chocolates and more - although these can be expensive. One person recently visited a hotel and was told everything in the mini bar was free.

Upon entering their room and heading to the mini fridge to indulge, they found just one bottle of still water, and nothing else.

Taking to Reddit to share their bemusement with the masses, they posted a photo of the fridge and simply said: ''Everything in the mini bar is free', they said - what disappointing UK hotel experiences have you had?'
In the comments section, people were keen to share their worst hotel experiences up and down the nation.
One person said: 'I stayed in a hotel in Glasgow in late 2020- their dining room was still closed so you filled in a breakfast order form and they delivered it to your room.

'I ordered the continental breakfast, which was meant to consist of mini pastries and fruit salad. I got a squashed plain croissant and a whole, unpeeled orange in a brown paper bag.'
Another said: 'I once had a hotel booked in London but when we turned up, there was a skip outside and the doors were locked.
'We tried ringing and nobody was answering. They'd just shut down and not cancelled bookings.'

A third shared: 'Someone knocked on my door in a hotel in Wales and handed me a complete Wales Rugby kit, and said it was 'for me'.
'I presumed it was some sort of gift (I was young, and travelling for work - never stayed in [a] nice hotel before).
'Half an hour later the guy came and asked for it back. The Welsh team were staying in the hotel and they'd got the wrong room.'

Someone else commented: 'Went to a gig at Wembley and stayed in a B&B. Breakfast was Tesco value Swiss rolls, ready salted crisps and tea with no milk.'
Another Reddit user said: 'I stopped at a B&B near Gatwick airport for a flight the next day. The full English consisted of tinned mushrooms, watery tinned beans, a fresh tomato, cold toast and three tinned hotdog sausages.'
Sharing a different experience, one person added: 'In a former life I had Gold (approaching Diamond) status with IHG.
'On a couple of occasions they upgraded me to a suite and gave me a full free minibar and a bottle of champagne.
'I don't miss all of the travel and crippling exhaustion, but I do miss the little perks that made me feel special.'

King's former gardener reveals hidden tribute to Queen at Balmoral

Located in the Highlands, the Balmoral estate has been the Scottish residence of the royals since the 1800s and is where the family often spend Christmas. A beloved spot by the Queen - who passed away in 2022 - it's also a place King Charles spent much of his childhood. The grounds have been open to the [[pub]]lic since last year but the castle gardens have been newly renovated with a Thistle maze, the Celtic maze garden, as well as a generous array of topiary, trees and shrubbery. READ MORE: I visited Balmoral - and it was well worth the £150 entry fee New Balmoral tartan created at request of King Charles on his birthday Monarchy's income to rise by £45m to more than £130m due to Crown Estate profits And Jack Stooks, who worked as a senior gardener at Highgrove for King Charles for over two decades, has revealed why the designs have such a personal touch. He said: 'Mazes are very special to Charles as he used to love playing in the maze at Sandringham when he was young. His grandmother, the late Queen Mother, used to speak fondly about her memories of him in the maze and how much he loved the topiary. It's likely Charles wanted to bring some of the nostalgia of his childhood back to the Balmoral gardens and make it a place of fun and excitement for future generations. Balmoral was also a very special residence for the Queen, so Charles will want others to enjoy a place that was so special for his mother. It's like a tribute to her. 'Charles has an amazing work ethic and he's very hands on. I remember doing some topiary pieces for him in Scotland with two yew trees that resided in the vegetable garden. I did a drawing and suggested finishing the top with the Prince of Wales feathers. The drawing came back with a handwritten note from Charles that praised the design but suggested swapping the feathers for a cone. He takes the time to consider these things, and it helps that he has a love for gardening and greenery. 'Now Balmoral is open to the public, Charles wants to make the grounds as inviting as possible for everyone. He wants to make it a place that's exciting for future generations too. The grounds are quite bare as it's cold for much of the year, but the topiary in the mazes have an evergreen appeal. Plus, they've included thistle within the topiary as a proud nod to Scotland. Despite being English, Charles knows how important it is to pay tribute to Balmoral's rich history in the Highlands.'

Where to watch the UEFA Women's Euro final in Dubai: England vs Spain

After 29 matches, 104 goals and more than a few nervous moments, we now know our two finalists. The UEFA Women's Euro final of 2025 will see the reigning world champions Spain take on the defending European champions England. If England's matches so far in the Euros are anything to go by then we're in for yet another dramatic evening on Sunday July 27. The two giants of the game will kick-off at 8pm Gulf Standard Time at the St. Jakob Park in the Swiss city of Basel. England have needed super-subs Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly to come to the rescue with late goals against Sweden and Italy in the knock-out rounds, giving manager Sarina Wiegman a headache as she aims to win her third successive Women's Euros. Spain's route to the final has been, typically, more controlled with the only tricky obstacle so far being the extra-time victory in the semi-final against Germany. Otherwise, Spain have comfortably beaten Portugal, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland on their way to the final with Alexia Putellas, Patri Gujarro and Aitana Bonmatí particularly standing out. 'Most stunning' UK seaside town home to one of Europe's most beautiful castles

With its towering medieval walls, ancient castle and lively harbour, the town is a fantastic place to visit for a day trip or staycation With its towering walls, ancient castle and bustling harbour, Conwy is one of the most stunningly picturesque towns you'll visit in Wales. This historic coastal retreat isn't just popular with tourists; it even earned a spot on the Sunday Times' list of the top places to live in the UK. ‌ "Every kind of natural adventure is within easy reach of the brooding towers and tumbledown castle walls that cast an enchanting spell over this coastal hotspot," they wrote of Conwy. ‌ "Those lucky enough to live in the town can pick up groceries and grab a coffee in impeccably historic surroundings, while enjoying the reassurance of regular trains and a fast road." ‌ Conwy Quay is the ideal starting point for your exploration, adorned with lobster pots, entwined fishing nets, and all the delightful seaside paraphernalia you'd expect. Right next to The Liverpool Arms there's even a convenient information board displaying the current rates if you're considering docking your boat in the harbour, reports Wales Online. Along the harbour, you'll also discover one of Conwy's most charming features: The Smallest House in Great Britain. Acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records, this petite red-fronted dwelling measures a mere 72 inches wide and 122 inches high and was inhabited until May 1900. ‌ It's been handed down through the same family for over 130 years. Its last known resident was a 6ft 3in fisherman named Robert Jones. Today, it serves as a quaint attraction and picture-perfect backdrop. Things to do in Conwy If you fancy a pint with a view, pop into The Liverpool Arms, the oldest traditional pub in Conwy town. ‌ Situated right on the waterfront, just across the road from the quay and beaches, it's particularly popular on a warm day with patrons spilling out onto the streets. History, harbour views and a good pint, what more could you ask for? Alongside the harbour, Conwy's main attraction is the Castell Conwy (Conwy Castle) and its walls. ‌ Part of Wales' UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Castell Conwy boasts a concentric design with eight towers. It's a key component of King Edward I's "Iron Ring", a chain of impressive fortresses built in Wales during the late 13th century to cement English dominance following the conquest of Wales. Visitors can delve into the inner and outer wards, which house numerous rooms, and explore the castle walls, which feature 21 towers and fully encircle the town of Conwy. Recognised for its aesthetic appeal and historical importance, the castle was dubbed one of Europe's 'most beautiful' by influential publication Condé Nast Traveller. ‌ They noted: "Aside from getting us one step closer to living out our fairytale fantasies, the staggering structures showcase some of the world's best architecture, most stunning landscapes, and maybe even a ghost story or two. There's perhaps no better place on earth to find awe-inspiring castles than in Europe, where it seems like you can't visit a city or take a road trip without stumbling upon some sort of royal dwelling." Like many historical structures in Wales, Conwy Castle is said to be haunted, much to the delight of ghost hunters and paranormal fans. ‌ Eerie sightings have included various silhouettes and dark figures observed from the battlements and windows overlooking the town. Given that King Henry VIII used the castle as a prison in the 16th century, many believe these apparitions to be former inmates. In 2016, a group of paranormal investigators claimed to have captured the voice of a young girl spirit uttering 'don't tell them'. Not exactly what you want to hear in a dim, echoing fortress. In 2020, a man snapped a photo outside Conwy Castle, which he believes shows a procession of phantoms led by a male ghost with a sword, as reported by North Wales Live. ‌ Once you've had your fill of castles and spectres, it's time for a treat, and Dylan's Restaurant is just the place. Established in 2012, Dylan's aimed to celebrate the produce, character, and natural beauty of North Wales, and they've hit the mark with this latest venture. The menu is a heartfelt tribute to local produce, gathered from across the region and served in a building as stunning as the dishes themselves. From the upper levels, you can enjoy panoramic views of the 13th-century St Mary's Church and Conwy Castle. For somewhere to stay, the Quay Hotel and Spa is a great option. This destination spa hotel boasts breathtaking views of the grand Conwy Castle and estuary and is conveniently situated near the Welsh towns of Conwy and Llandudno.
