An extremely large telescope emerges beneath a starry sky
An ethereal photograph recently taken by one of ESO's public live webcams is a dreamlike blend of nature and science. The image shows the ELT worksite illuminated by the Milky Way's bright stripe. A crane cable slices across the frame like a tight fishing line, hanging still as if grasping for the stars themselves. Inside the bony white skeleton of the half-constructed dome, support beams etch what will be an unprecedented scientific instrument.
The bulging outlines of the telescope's enormous dome doors, around the center, are taking form. When they are working, those doors will be playing an important role: safeguarding delicate optics from searing dust particles and blasting desert winds without inhibiting the telescope from casting its gaze out into the universe in unparalleled precision.
Recorded by ESO's live build webcam, the picture doesn't even suggest the size of this behemoth undertaking. When finished, the ELT dome will rise 80 meters high—about as high as Big Ben without its spire. For reference, construction equipment parked at ground level seems minute compared to the gargantuan structure. But the scale is not just physical—it's astronomical. When it comes online, the ELT will collect more light than any optical telescope currently on the planet, allowing scientists to glimpse the universe in ways previously unimaginable. Its potential will shed light on everything from how the first galaxies gave birth to our cosmos to the atmospheres of exoplanets that could harbor life.

The first satellite is scheduled for launch in April next year, and the deployment of all 52 satellites is expected to be completed by 2029. The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately Rs. 27,000 crore. The effectiveness of satellite data in modern warfare was already demonstrated by India during Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces carried out pinpoint strikes on the headquarters of terror outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeT) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) using intelligence gathered through human resources and satellite surveillance. The operation was so impactful that Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif admitted that the Pakistani Army was only able to endure the Indian offensive because of satellite data provided by China. In an interview, Asif had acknowledged, "During Operation Sindoor, our army received satellite data from China, which helped us withstand Indian attacks. China, being a friendly nation, supported us by providing satellite-based intelligence." Today, satellites are no longer limited to surveillance and data collection. They now play a crucial role in guiding long-range missiles to precise targets. This is why all major global powers are investing heavily in military-grade satellite systems. A comparative look at military satellites shows: - The United States leads with 247 military satellites in orbit. - China follows with 157 satellites. - Russia holds third place with 110 military satellites. - Currently, India has 9 military satellites, placing it seventh globally, but once the 52-satellite plan is complete, India's space capability could become like that of superpowers like Russia. Historically, warfare evolved from land and sea battles to air warfare in the 20th century, and now, the new frontier is space. The strategic significance of military presence in space has been echoed by India's first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, who stressed the urgent need for India to strengthen its cyber and space warfare capabilities. He believed that India must quickly master technologies that can establish the country as a powerful space-faring nation.

At the same time, the remaining 31 satellites will be launched by private companies. The first two satellites will be launched in April next year. India to fast-track 52 military satellites for better surveillance at borders

After defence forces realised the need for more precision surveillance during Operation Sindoor, the Union government has ordered the fast-tracking of the launch of 52 dedicated surveillance satellites, enhancing round-the-clock monitoring of coastline and land borders. In October last year, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee approved $3.2 billion for the SBS-III programme to develop next-generation satellites over the next decade. Under the programme, ISRO will manufacture and launch the first 21 satellites, while private companies will handle the remaining 31. The Defence Space Agency (DSA) will oversee the operation of the newly launched satellite system. 'We have asked the private companies and ISRO for early launch of satellites. These new satellites will add a next-generation radar imaging capability that will help in all-weather and day-night surveillance. We are expecting first set of satellites to be launched by 2026,' said a senior official. The official added that the new satellites will be using artificial intelligence (AI) to make smarter decisions and improve overall performance and efficiency in space. During Operation Sindoor, satellite-based surveillance helped Indian defence forces to act swiftly by offering accurate intelligence, including the trajectory and movement of drones and missiles. After the successful implementation of SBS-III, India will become more self-reliant and reduce its dependence on other countries. It will help focus more clearly and accurately on the Pakistan and China border and the Indian Ocean Region. During the Operation Sindoor, it was claimed that China provided satellite support to Pakistan. India's satellites, like the Cartosat and RISAT, helped defence forces to track enemy mobilisation, confirm strike impact, and maintain real-time situational awareness, which prevented any major damage to the country's military assets.
