Interest in archaeology site peaks after TV cameo
The Chester House Estate in Irchester, Northamptonshire, appeared on BBC Two's Digging for Britain earlier this month, with presenter Prof Alice Roberts exploring the Roman site.
Since the broadcast, the estate has seen a surge in interest, particularly in people wanting to join its Irchester Field School programme.
Jason Smithers, Conservative leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said: "It was great to see north Northamptonshire on the national stage and the Chester House Estate receiving the attention it rightly deserves."
The programme showcased rare finds from last summer's excavation and featured interviews with archaeologists and volunteers.
After the show aired, the estate said available spaces on the Irchester Field School programme - a hands-on archaeological initiative - were quickly filling up.
Students enrolled in the programme will explore the study of human bones to understand health, diet, and lifestyle in Roman times, examine skeletons and take part in excavation tours, watching archaeologists at work and learning about their techniques.
Helen Howell, deputy leader of the local authority, added: "Even before the Digging for Britain episode aired, our field school programme had already booked over half of the available spaces.
"Now being featured on one of the country's most loved archaeological programmes, inquiries from schools are booming."
Just weeks before the BBC episode aired, the Irchester Field School programme won the Learning, Training and Skills award at the national Archaeological Achievement Awards.
The field school is due to run from 16 June to 4 July, with more than 2,000 students participating last year.

To Discover Real Roman Food, Head to the Neighborhoods
During a recent dinner at a modern Roman trattoria way out in the city sticks, I bonded with strangers at the next table, discovered a new wine, had a pasta epiphany — and smiled at the bill: just over $100 for two, vino included. I love Rome as much as the next Bernini-besotted visitor. But to find the platonic ideal of pasta Amatriciana or trippa alla Romana, I had to leave behind the Centro Storico's cobblestoned piazzas, where faux-Felliniesque tourist mills dish out reheated carbonara to throngs. Instead, my partner and I spent our two weeks in Rome taking the metro and buses to neighborhoods where affordable rents allow creative young chefs to nurture their talents — and their customers' appetites — and where a convivial spirit still thrives. The vibes often recalled Brooklyn or Berlin. But the cooking was rooted in the Roman vernacular, with its guanciale-powered pastas, seasonal vegetables and quinto quarto (a.k.a. offal). 'Young local chefs haven't abandoned Roman tradition,' said Marco Bolasco, author of an indispensable new restaurant guide, 'Roma Food Tour.' 'But they're reinterpreting the city's cuisine with incredible ingredients from the surrounding countryside.' And because of the cost factor, he added, the action was all happening away from the city center. The six places below serve up the delicious proof — but make sure to book in advance. Centocelle I'm still daydreaming about the ravioli at Menabò Vino e Cucina, silky pouches filled with coratella (lamb innards) topped with a green shock of favas, peas and asparagus and pushed into the stratosphere by a haunting sauce of 'smoked milk.' That pasta alone was worth a 40-minute metro trek east of the city center to the formerly working class neighborhood of Centocelle. The Camponeschi brothers (Paolo cooks; Daniele is the wine curator and front of the house) opened Menabò seven years ago — attracted, Daniele explains, by Centocelle's multicultural vibe and community spirit. The new series of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins has been filmed in the "home" of the SAS, according to the show's professional trainers, and will see the celebs face the "hardest course yet". Speaking to the BBC, the show's chief instructor Billy Billingham opened up about the filming location of the latest celebrity series – starting tonight (Sunday 3 August) – which is in Wales for the first time. Ahead of the premiere on Channel 4 at 9pm, we've taken a deep dive into the location of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins 2025 to find out more about this breathtakingly rugged landscape, and why it was chosen for the series. Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins 2025 was filmed in Anglesey, which is an island off the northwest coast of Wales. "It's beautiful, of course, but it's unforgiving. It's a great test ground," chief instructor Billy said of the new location on BBC Radio Wales. "You can have four seasons in one day." Adding to that, a Channel 4 press release described the filming location as the "hardest course yet" for the celebrity contestants. "The elite team of ex-Special Forces soldiers are taking these famous faces to Wales," the press release noted. Wales marks the "home of the first phase" of this SAS series, and there the contestants will "be stripped of their home comforts, families, agents and social media." "It's a birthplace of the special forces, the SAS, where we do all our training in Wales," Billy added of the location. For that reason, Billy says he and the other staffers have been wanting the show to "come home". "We've been wanting to come home, as we call it, for a long time," he explained, adding that Wales' rugged landscape and often harsh weather is a "test in itself" for the contestants. "It sounds exotic to go to New Zealand and Australia and all these places," Billy went on. "But it was great to come home. It offers everything we want." Previously, one season of the civilian edition was filmed in Wales, but this is the first time that the celebrities will be heading to Cymru for their SAS training. For other seasons, the show has taken contestants across the globe, filming everywhere from Scotland to Morocco, Chile, Vietnam and New Zealand.
