Pre-owned Switch 2 consoles that have been modded are reportedly being bricked by Nintendo's anti-piracy policy
Redditor Bimmytung says they bought a second-hand console from Walmart, only to discover that the Switch 2 is permanently offline
Nintendo has been blocking access to online services on the console if players have modded the console using the MIG Flash tool
If you're thinking about purchasing a second-hand Nintendo Switch 2, you may want to think twice, as Nintendo's anti-piracy policy has reportedly left some consoles permanently offline.
As IGN reports, Redditor Bimmytung shared a post explaining how they bought a pre-owned Switch 2 from Walmart, only to find that it had been 'bricked' by Nintendo after booting it up.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Nintendo had been blocking access to online services on the console if players had used MIG Flash, a tool used to allow players to backup copies of games.
Before the Switch 2 launched, Nintendo suggested in its user agreement that it had the power to 'brick' devices that are modded.
"Nintendo may render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device permanently unusable in whole or in part", it reads.
Those affected will be presented with error code "2124-4508," which will permanently block players from accessing online services, which is exactly what Redditor Bimmytung has experienced.
Found one. Didn't end well. from r/switch2
"Been casually looking for a Switch 2. Today I was driving between work sites and stopped at two different Walmarts. At the second one I find a Mario Kart edition sitting in the case and couldn't believe my luck," Bimmytung said.
"Physically it's fine, everything seems there. Notice that the Mario Kart code is scratched off. Hmm. Naturally wonder if the original buyer redeemed the code and returned the system. They knocked $50 off the price so I figured I'd roll the dice and at least have the hardware. Bought a Pro Controller 2 while I was at it.
The Redditor continued, saying, "Get home and go to finish the setup - quickly get Error Code 2124-4508. A quick Google search shows me I'm screwed. FML. Thankfully my local Walmart accepted the return without any fuss but still... I wish nothing but enthusiastic double gonorrhea to the lowlife scum that did this."
Users with a 'bricked' Switch 2 would essentially be unable to access any multiplayer games like Mario Kart World, the eShop, Game Chat, and more.
Thankfully, stores like Walmart can accept refunds, but if you were to buy a second-hand console from eBay without knowing if it had been modded, you're out of luck.

Why Block (XYZ) Shares Are Soaring Today

July 21 - Block (NYSE:XYZ) shares advanced roughly 8% on Monday morning after it was selected to enter the S&P 500 Index later this week. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 6 Warning Sign with XYZ. The inclusion follows Chevron's (NYSE:CVX) completed acquisition of Hess (NYSE:HES), creating a vacancy in the benchmark index that Block is set to fill starting Wednesday. Despite a 14% drop in 2025 prior to the news, the digital payments company is now drawing renewed attention from analysts, many of whom point to rising momentum across its key business segments. Jefferies recently lifted its price target on Block to $90 from $75 while maintaining a buy rating. The firm expects a pickup in gross payment volume, particularly in the U.S., to support further upside. Analysts also highlighted the potential for growth at Cash App, Block's consumer-focused payments platform, which could see stronger user engagement in the coming quarters. Deutsche Bank, which also holds a bullish stance, noted signs of improving transaction trends, citing room for further acceleration. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Opendoor stock gains more than 100% as retail frenzy continues to push shares higher

Opendoor Technologies (OPEN) stock continued its meteoric rise on Monday, with shares rising over 100% in afternoon trading as the meme stock-style rally continues. The long-beleaguered iBroker platform saw its share price gain 188% last week, bringing the stock from just above $0.50 less than a month ago to now above $4. Shares still remain far below their all-time high of $39.24 reached in February 2021. Powering the stock, in part, has been a public bull case from Carvana (CVNA) turnaround spotter EMJ Capital and a ream of speculative bets posted to the subreddit wallstreetbets, a haven for meme stocks, have both added significant fuel to the fire. Retail trading activity in the stock has surged in recent weeks, according to data from VandaTrack. Since going public through a SPAC transaction in December 2020, Opendoor has yet to post a profitable quarter. But EMJ Capital principal Eric Jackson — who first gained notoriety for being an early believer in turnaround potential at Carvana — predicted in an X thread laying out his bull case on the stock that it would report its first quarter of positive EBITDA in August and that he sees a price target of $82. The company was served a warning that it faced potential delisting from the Nasdaq in May after trading under $1 for more than 30 days. In June, it settled a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company did not properly disclose its price algorithm's inability to adapt to changes in the housing market. As with meme-stock predecessors GameStop (GME) and AMC (AMC) during their own retail-frenzied runs throughout 2021, short bets on Opendoor had hit a record level, accounting for more than 25% of the company's float by the end of June. Its not just bitcoin. Companies are now adding ethereum to their balance sheets.

It's not just bitcoin (BTC-USD) that corporate treasuries are buying. A handful of firms are scooping up ethereum — or its native token, ether (ETH-USD) — as a way to gain exposure to the tech infrastructure behind decentralized finance and digital assets. So far, the companies taking this approach are mainly smaller names in the crypto world, such as BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), chaired by Fundstrat's Tom Lee. One larger player — Coinbase Global (COIN), the parent company of trading network Coinbase — has more than $440 million in holdings, according to crypto and investment tracker CoinGecko. When Coinbase announced in a 2021 blog post that it would become the first publicly traded company to hold ethereum and other assets, in addition to bitcoin, it stated, "We believe that in the future, more and more companies will hold crypto assets on their balance sheet." Ethereum has surged 60% over the past month to hover near $3,800, its highest level since January. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap has yet to reclaim its 2021 high north of $4,600. Ethereum allows developers to write programs or contracts that run entirely on its blockchain, or network. It currently leads as the dominant infrastructure that allows businesses and consumers to transact with each other directly without banks, with a market share of more than 51%. "Ethereum lets anyone — whether it's a crypto project, a factory, an artist, an influencer — create their own token and thus their own community and incentivize communities with an economy basically," Ray Youssef, CEO of crypto marketplace NoOnes, told Yahoo Finance. He called tokenization ethereum's "killer app." "You could argue it has more utility than bitcoin," he said. That utility is why firms like BitMine and SharpLink Gaming have increasingly been raising capital to buy ETH, similar to how Strategy (MSTR) and a slew of other companies have added bitcoin to their balance sheets in recent months. Read more: Can you buy crypto with a credit card? See the pros and cons. As with bitcoin, the approach can be risky due to volatile prices. Ethereum prices tumbled in April when President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs announcement roiled markets. The rewards have not been as high as those that bitcoin has offered either: The return on ethereum year to date is 14%, versus bitcoin's 26%. Crypto miner BitMine Immersion Technologies recently announced it holds more than $1 billion in ethereum, or roughly 300,000 tokens. The company, which went public on June 5, has positioned itself as a pure-play on ethereum, betting that owning it is akin to owning the underlying infrastructure behind the convergence of crypto and financial services. "Acquiring $1 billion of ETH1 is a clear signal of our conviction in ethereum's long-term value," Jonathan Bates, CEO of BitMine, said in the press release announcing the news. He noted that the company was "committed to Ethereum's continued growth." BitMine shares surged 25% in one session last week after an SEC filing revealed that billionaire Peter Thiel purchased 9.1% of the firm's common stock through his investment funds. Gaming and sports betting company SharpLink Gaming (SBET) and blockchain tech firm BTCS (BTCS) have also pursued similar treasury strategies. Shares of each are up nearly 200% over the past month. Earlier this month, computing firm Bit Digital (BTBT) announced that it had shifted its entire treasury from bitcoin to ethereum. "We believe Ethereum has the ability to rewrite the entire financial system," Sam Tabar, CEO of Bit Digital, said in a press release. Year to date, the stock is up 17%. Ethereum's surge coincides with the GENIUS Act, landmark legislation signed by President Trump last Friday, moving through Congress. The new law regulates stablecoins, digital tokens backed by assets like the US dollar and short-term treasuries. Optimism over stablecoin's adoption has sent shares of issuer Circle (CRCL) up more than 600% since its IPO on June 5. The company's USD Coins (USDC-USD) run on ethereum. "If real companies and institutional investors are innovating on the blockchain, doesn't that make blockchain networks, and by implication, blockchain network assets (e.g ETH) valuable?" Bernstein's Gautam Chhugani asked in a note last month. "Any company that uses stablecoin tech pays transaction fees to the Ethereum network." To be sure, not all companies see the same value in ethereum as they do in bitcoin. When asked directly whether Strategy would add ETH to its holdings, executive chairman Michael Saylor said in an interview with The Street, "MicroStrategy wouldn't because MicroStrategy is 150% Bitcoin. We do Bitcoin, we're 150% Bitcoin. We're going to be Bitcoin. And the only thing I like more than Bitcoin is more Bitcoin." Indeed, ethereum is by no means replacing bitcoin as the investment of choice for companies, Sean Farrell, head of digital asset strategy at Fundstrat, told Yahoo Finance. Consider it an adjacent strategy. "I don't want people to misconstrue this movement from treasury companies to be viewed [as] ETH is replacing bitcoin. It's just blockchain technology applied in a different way for a different use case," Farrell said. "These companies are just capitalizing on the real world asset [tokenization] trends."
