Pakistan Hockey Team Invited To Join FIH Pro League After New Zealand Withdrawal
New Zealand withdrew from the FIH Hockey Pro League Men's 2025–26 season, prompting the FIH to invite runners-up Pakistan, who must confirm participation by August 12.
Following New Zealand's decision to withdraw from the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League Men's 2025–26 season—despite having secured victory in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup last month—the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has extended an invitation to the tournament runners-up, Pakistan, in accordance with its regulations.
The Pakistan Hockey Association has been given a deadline of August 12 to confirm whether they will accept or decline the invitation.
The recently concluded 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League saw both Dutch national teams—men's and women's—claim the championship titles. The forthcoming season will mark the seventh edition of the league.
India has suspended all bilateral sporting engagements with Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which it attributed to Pakistan-based militants.
Pakistan's last visit to India was for the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy, where they finished fifth out of six competing teams.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated significantly in May during a four-day conflict that resulted in 70 fatalities, marking the worst violence between the two nations in decades.
Pakistan had been scheduled to participate in the Asia Cup, set to be hosted in India next month. However, participation is now uncertain as the Pakistan Hockey Federation awaits government clearance to travel.
'After the recent war, the security and safety of our hockey players will be at risk," a source from Pakistan's sports ministry told AFP.
The same source confirmed that Pakistan would also skip the Junior World Cup, scheduled to be held in India this November.
Once a dominant powerhouse in international hockey—with three Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles—Pakistan has since declined to 15th in the global rankings.
Pakistan's potential absence from the Asia Cup could jeopardize their qualification for the 2026 senior World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium. A second government official confirmed the decision to AFP.

'Generations Will Talk About This': For Gambhir, No Praise Good Enough For Pant
Last Updated: Rishabh Pant batted with a broken foot during India's first innings at Old Trafford and scored a half-century. Rishabh Pant has laid the foundation on which the current Indian team's character will be built, says India head coach Gautam Gambhir while lauding the Test vice-captain for returning to bat despite a broken foot. Pant had fractured his toe while batting in India's first innings of the 4th Test and retiring out in excruciating pain. He returned to bat on Day 2 amidst a loud reception from the Manchester crowd and scored a half-century to help India to 358-all out. The wicketkeeper-batter has been ruled out from the fifth and final Test that starts from Thursday at The Oval. 'The character and foundation of this team will be built on something what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well. Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot," Gambhir told reporters on Sunday. 'Not many people have done that in the past. And he (Pant) put his hands up. And that is that is why I say that any amount of praise…I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations will talk about this and generations ahead should talk about it that there is someone who batted with a broken foot," he added. Gambhir is hopeful Pant, who made 479 runs from four Test on the tour, will make a quick recovery. 'It's unfortunate (Pant being ruled out) because of the kind of form he was in. But again, he's an important member of the Test side and I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly and try and deliver again for us," Gambhir said. India pulled off a memorable draw in Manchester after conceding a huge first innings lead and being two wickets down in their second dig without scoring a run at one stage. Centuries from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar led their superlative effort on a tricky pitch as they made 425/4 before the two teams agreed for a draw. India though still trail 1-2 in the five-match series and are focused on ending the tour with a win. 'You are asking someone who only believes in results," Gambhir said. 'I've said that in the past as well, that I believe in results. We are still 2-1 down in the series. This is the Indian team. Yes, there is an inexperience but this is still the best Indian team right now. So for me, I think we are still down 2-1 and hopefully we can try and make it 2-all. That's going to be a good achievement." view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 08:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Leylah Fernandez Dominates Anna Kalinskaya To Win Citi Open
Last Updated: Leylah Fernandez wins WTA DC Open, beating Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets for her first WTA 500 title in two years. Star Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez delivered a commanding performance to beat Russia's Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets and win the WTA Tour's DC Open in Washington on Sunday, July 27. Fernandez bagged her first WTA 500 win and her first title in two years, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. The victory over Kalinskaya capped a fairytale week for Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, who had beaten top seed Jessica Pegula and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on her way to claiming the fourth title of her career. Fernandez mentioned that her confidence grew throughout the tournament. 'At the beginning of the tournament, there was still a lot of doubt, but as the tournament progressed, I started to play better," Fernandez said. 'I have faced many challenges this week. I think it has made me stronger, knowing that if I can get through this week — with the cramps, long matches, heat, and humidity — I can overcome anything." Fernandez started strongly, dominating Kalinskaya's serve to take the opening set in just 30 minutes. After three holds left Fernandez 2-1 up, the breakthrough came in the fourth game with Kalinskaya's serve looking increasingly fragile. The Russian faced trouble at 15-40 down and double-faulted to give Fernandez the break and a 3-1 lead. Fernandez had no such difficulty on serve and held comfortably for a 4-1 lead before attacking Kalinskaya's serve in the sixth game. The Canadian held two break points at 15-40 and converted the second for a 5-1 lead, hitting a backhand return that left Kalinskaya rooted to the spot. A delicate drop shot at the net secured Fernandez the set in the next game. The second set resembled the first, with Fernandez grabbing an early break to take the initiative at 2-1 before breaking again soon after for a 4-1 lead. The next two games went with serve, but Fernandez made no mistake when serving for the match, converting the second of two match points. Fernandez will head to Canada for this week's WTA 1000 Canadian Open in Montreal, where she anticipates a tougher challenge. 'Montreal is a whole different monster," she said. 'It's a bigger draw, a longer tournament. It's going to start from zero." Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said he has no issues with India being placed in the same group as Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup, asserting that while terrorism must end, sport must continue. As per the schedule, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are clubbed in Group A and are set to face off at the Dubai International Stadium on September 14. "I'm okay with the schedule. Sport must go on," Ganguly told PTI. The T20 tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28. India will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 and are expected to play all their matches in Dubai. India and Pakistan could also meet again in the Super Four stage on September 21. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. #WATCH | Kolkata: On India-Pakistan placed in the same group in the Asia Cup, former Indian cricketer Saurav Ganguly says, "I am okay.
