'I can see Killarney hosting professional events again in next number of years'

Irish Examiner15 hours ago
Elite level golf returns to Killarney Golf & Fishing Club this week as Golf Ireland hosts the prestigious European Team Men's Championship, 50 years on from the event's one and only previous staging on Irish soil, at the same Kerry venue.
And even as the Killarney staff were putting the finishing touches to the Killeen course and the property in general ahead of Tuesday's opening day of action as Ireland takes its place among the top 16 teams on the continent, the mindset at the club is that this week's competition is only just the start of staging such events.
Director of Golf Colin Finlay told the Irish Examiner that a return of the men's professional Irish Open for a fifth time and a first since 2011 was within Killarney's scope given the investment that has already gone into the property and the funds still to be deployed.
For now, though, the hard work has been to get the 7,200-yard Killeen layout in pristine condition in readiness for Europe's top amateur men.
"The most important part is getting the course looking how it needs to be for a high-level championship,' Finlay said, 'so Enda Murphy the head greenkeeper and the greenkeeping team have been working day in, day out and putting in a really good effort to make sure it's going to be tip-top for the guys coming over here because that's what is expected.
"There's hundreds of hours' work that's gone into this. It was 100 per cent a Golf Ireland bid but we at Killarney are delighted to be hosting these championships again.
"Preparations started the moment we're won the bid last year and it's been a full-on process ever since from all the team on the ground here.
"Everyone in the club has been working towards this championship and so you're looking at hundreds and hundreds of hours of work that go into five days, and the practice days and the set- up.
"It's exciting, it's good and it's going to look impressive. Killeen is a beautiful golf course and as parkland courses go it's 7,200 yards and it can be a beast but the setting doesn't get much better with the first four or five holes around the lake.
"But the holes themselves, €100,000-plus has gone into the 18th hole. From the 18th tee you used to just see a water hazard down the left, but now there's a stone perimeter around the lake and two stone bridges, so it's framed beautifully now.
"All the work done here just adds to the professionalism and the quality and the standards that have been kept high over the last five or six years."
Finlay spoke of the combined efforts of Killarney town and its golf club to get this championship up and running and said: "The town lends itself to these events and hosting large groups of people, which it does every year.
The hotels have been on board with the Castlerosse next door and the Brehon booked out for the week and the facilities here are second to none.
'The practice facilities we have across the road in the academy will be absolutely spot on for the championship and I think that's probably where we can shine a little bit this week.
'The investment has gone into the academy with grass tee boxes, it will be like a tour event because we want this to be a memorable week for the guys. It's a serious week but we want them to enjoy it and enjoy what Killarney has to offer and I think they will."
Finlay believes a successful staging this week can be a stepping stone to hosting professional tour events once more.
" I think you can absolutely see some high-level events coming here in the near future.
"What that will be remains to be seen but I think we'll have this week as a very high-level event which I think we will deal with very well. We've hosted big events and large numbers of people before and if we can do that again in the future I don't see why wouldn't at least try.
"Killeen is a stadium course, it's set up for these events. We have the infrastructure, we have the course, we have the facilities.
'I can see us getting up to hosting professional events again in the next number of years. Whether it's an Irish Open, or a Seniors Tour or Women's event, I don't see why not. The sky's the limit.
"We have the people on the ground, we have the people behind the scenes and we have the drive to be able to do that sort of stuff now. It's going to be an exciting five or six years ahead."

Brendan Rodgers: 'It would have been lovely for Adam, but it was just too big a risk'

'Cork is the new Mediterranean,' was Brendan Rodgers' response when he was asked for his assessment on Celtic's narrow Cork Super Cup triumph against Cork City. In the baking heat at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night, goals from Luke McCowan and Colby Donovan, either side of a superbly taken equaliser by 17-year-old Cork native Matthew Murray, ensured the Scottish champions claimed another piece of silverware. But while they were treated to a decent contest, many of those amongst the 26,580 crowd that made their way to the home of Cork GAA may have been disappointed not to see Cork's Adam Idah line out in the famous Hoops on his return to Leeside. In a more serious tone, Rodgers explained his reasons behind leaving the former College Corinthians forward out of his squad entirely. 'Emotionally it would have been lovely, and Adam would have loved to have played but those international guys that come back Friday… he trained hard this morning and all those other guys, but it was just too big a risk,' he insisted. 'To come back in after being off for the summer and you only train Friday, Saturday, we normally would give them at least a week before they would play. 'Adam knows. I think for him it's just amazing for him to be back home, to come back… when I told him last year, we would be coming to Cork he was really excited about it. 'If the international games were at a different time, he would have been back in earlier and then trained and been on a good level. 'He understood why he wasn't involved, but I know he's loved being back here for this short time.' Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers meets fans before the pre-season friendly. Pic: Niall Carson/PA Wire. One Irish player that did feature for Celtic on the night was Johnny Kenny and while Rodgers admitted he was also close to missing out, the Celts boss added that he hopes the Sligo native will sign a new deal with the club in the near future. 'It was nice for Johnny. He actually took a bad knock in training on Monday, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to play. 'He got a real bad knock on his shin. But I think he was really determined to come over to Ireland and play. 'Johnny was threatening the back line, nearly looked like he'd get in a couple of times, but he always gives his all and we'll see how pre-season goes for him. 'I think the plan for Johnny is, if we can, because we still think there's a lot of development for him but yes, we would like to sign him to a new deal and then see what path it takes, whether he stays or whether he needs to go and get games. We'll know that over the coming weeks.' Celtic's trip to Cork has been short and eventful, but otherwise it seemed to have been a success for all parties. Asked if a Cork Super Cup rematch is on the cards for next summer, then, Rodgers remarked: 'I cannot promise anything, I can't commit to anything now. 'We've got so many offers to travel the world, but I also think it's good for us to take Celtic to different parts of Ireland as well. 'We've been to Sligo last year, that was great. We've been to Cork and our notion is always to come back to here. 'But the short time we've been here, we've been received so well, and the facility has been brilliant. "The hotel (Fota) was so good, and the only problem was we couldn't play some golf! 'But can I just say, just officially as well, a big thank you to the people of Cork and the city. 'It's been so nice from when we arrived yesterday (Monday) afternoon. The support, the friendship, everything has been amazing so a wonderful place to come and play and tonight was a great event for us all. So, thank you very much for everything.'

GAA+ revenue taking ‘direct hit' from dodgy boxes as proposed ‘Netflix levy' will raise costs for streamers, pols hear

THE popularity of dodgy boxes is having a 'direct hit' on the GAA's finances as people are illegally streaming games instead of signing up for GAA+, a Dail watchdog heard today. Officials from the Advertisement 1 Almost half a million people in Ireland use a dodgy box, it's been found Credit: Getty The Broadcasting Amendment Bill will force The legislation will also create the possibility of a new content production levy or ' However, Arts Minister Patrick O'Donovan has vowed that he will not introduce this levy while he is in charge due to concerns that it will push up the price of subscriptions for users. Head of GAA+ Noel Quinn told the Advertisement READ MORE IN IRISH NEWS He said that the introduction, timing and collection of any levy should reflect each platform's scale and resources instead of one size fits all. The GAA+ boss noted that any levy would likely have a knock on impact on the price of streaming subscriptions and hurt consumers. In a briefing document provided to the Committee, the GAA Plus boss raised concerns about the prevalence of 'dodgy boxes' that are being used to illegally stream games. Dodgy boxes enable people to access a range of content and TV channels from across the globe illegally by streaming them online through a specific device and app. Advertisement Most read in Irish News GAA+ told the Dail watchdog that it is estimated that half a million people use dodgy boxes in Ireland and the prevalence is having a direct hit on their subscriber growth potential. The briefing document said: 'On the topic of regulation and while it is not directly related to the Revised General Scheme, it would be remiss to make a submission linked to the Irish broadcast sector without raising the major issue of piracy. 'Copyright infringement and intellectual property theft remains a damning thorn in the side of official bodies and requires immediate and serious collective action. 'The proliferation of 'dodgy boxes', which experts conservatively estimate to be in the region of 500,000 in Ireland, is a direct hit to the GAA's potential subscription revenue earning power – a key pillar of its commercial arm that seeks to reinvest 82 per cent of all profits to grassroots clubs, counties and provinces – and merits sustained regulation and consequential policing of the offenders by the highest authorities in conjunction with the effected parties.' England take charge at European Amateur Team Championship in Killarney

England took the opening round lead at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club as the 11-time champions began their quest for another European Amateur Team Championship with an impressive -20 total. Charlie Forster was the star performer as the Basingstoke golfer carded a superb 65 in the Kerry sunshine. Hosts Ireland also got off to a solid start as Damien Coyne's men opened with an -11 total to take a share of third place, with Thomas Higgins (Roscommon) the best of the Irish carding a -4 round of 68. Stuart Grehan (Co Louth) was given the honour of leading out the Irish team on Tuesday morning as he teed up alongside 2024 Gold Medal winning Swedish golfer Albert Hansson. The Flogas Irish Men's Amateur Open Champion got the Irish off to a solid start with a 71, to lay a marker down for the rest of the team. Dundalk golfer, Caolan Rafferty kept that strong start going as he carded a 72 before debutant John Doyle (Fota Island) battled through some early round nerves to sign for an impressive -3 round of 69. With Ireland climbing the leaderboard, Amateur Championship runner-up, Gavin Tiernan (Co Louth) added to the tally with a 71, before the experienced Matt McClean (Malone) finished with a -2. It would be Higgins though who would take the bragging rights among the team as a single bogey on the first was quickly corrected, with the Clemson University star carding five birdies in an excellent finish. 'Played pretty solid,' said Higgins. 'Didn't start off great, bogey on one and then played pretty flawless from there on in. Didn't make a bogey from there so I was happy with my game and played well and held a few crucial par putts that were good momentum savers.' Iceland are searching for their first ever win at this event and they began in ideal fashion too as they will take second place overnight. Three of their players, Sveinsson (-5), Heidarsson (-5) and Sigurbrandsson (-4) played their way inside the individual top ten, helping hand their team a -13 opening day start. With 18 holes of stroke play remaining before match play takes over on Thursday morning the race is on for each country to take one of the coveted top eight spots, and with England taking the early advantage, Forster and his team are confident of another strong showing tomorrow. 'We have a really good team, all six players, it's quite nice. I'm sure we are going to be hunting more birdies tomorrow,' said Forster. 'Hopefully we can have another solid day tomorrow and show what we have got in the Match Play. I think we have got a really good team out there this year, so we'll see what happens.'
