A static speed camera is set to go live on a busy road this week

It is set to be installed in the inner-city suburb Dolphin's Barn as part of a wider push to improve road safety in the capital.

And it has been revealed that the static safety camera is set to begin operating from Friday, August 1.

In a statement,
"The Council worked closely with An Garda Síochána to facilitate the installation and initial operation of the camera.
"The Static Safety Camera, which is located in Dolphin's Barn, will commence operation from Friday 1 August 2025."
It marks the first time a permanent, static speed camera has been introduced within the Dublin City Council area.

These new cameras are replacing older yellow box models that have been out of action for years, serving as a heads-up to drivers that penalties are on the way if they exceed the limit.

Regarding the initiative, gardai previously said that speed plays a major role in Irish
They said: "Speed is a significant contributor to road deaths and a cause in 30 per cent of fatal collisions.
"International experience shows that safety cameras lead to a reduction in speed by drivers.
'Infrastructure and technology for two average safety camera systems have been installed on the N3 and N5 - with the safety camera sites chosen because they meet the criteria as being high collision sites with numerous road traffic collisions, involving injury, serious injury and fatalities.'

These cameras will be placed in some of the busiest areas where speeding has been a major concern for quite some time.
Gardai revealed that as the new cameras are rolled out, they will keep the public updated on any new locations entering the testing phase.
Static speed cameras are fixed cameras set up at certain spots, usually along busy roads, to catch drivers speeding.

They're "static" because they don't move - they're mounted on poles or buildings and they automatically snap a photo of your licence plate if you're speeding.
These cameras use radar or laser technology to detect the speed of passing vehicles.
If a vehicle is speeding, the camera captures an image of the vehicle's licence plate, along with details like the speed at which it was travelling and the time of the violation.
The aim is to encourage drivers to adhere to speed limits by providing a constant automated presence without requiring gardai to be on-site.

Despite crossing the line second, Dunne was left frustrated by Marti's defensive tactics but with the stewards still to make their final call, the result may yet change. Regardless, it was another strong showing from the Irish driver as he continues to underline his growing credentials in the paddock. The provisional results see Dunne move joint third in the standings on 122 points, level with Crawford with Richard Verschoor a further point ahead and Leonardo Fornaroli top on 127 ahead of tomorrow's feature race.

Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy to begin second leg of Secto Rally Finland in ninth place
The Irish crew of Josh McErlean/Eoin Treacy (Ford Puma Rally1) will begin Saturday's second leg of Secto Rally Finland in ninth place after a steady run through Friday's nine stages. Out in front in a tense battle and having taken the outright lead on SS3, Finland's Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1), who has never won his home event, leads the way - 4.9s seconds ahead of reigning World champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 Rally1) whose team mate Adrian Fourmaux is 2.8s seconds further behind in third. Pre-event championship leader Ott Tanak (Hyundai i20 Rally1) took a 1.3s lead on Thursday evening's opening Harju street stage but it was Japan's Takamoto Katsuta (with his Fintona co-driver Aaron Johnston) and Rovanpera that shared top spot after Friday's opener before Rovanpera won the next two stages that included the fast Saarikas stage - a reversal of previous years. He arrived at the service park with a 4.4s advantage over Fourmaux with Finland's Sami Pajari (Toyota) just a tenth of a second behind in third, the latter also winning two of the morning's stages. Katsuta in fourth was followed by Neuville, who like many others, was of the opinion that the stages were too fast. "It's just pure taking risks.' Eight time World champion and last year's event winner Sebastien Ogier, who was trying to find a rhythm, concurred. "The roads are almost too fast in places - they're just flat out everywhere, not the most enjoyable in places." Meanwhile, the M-Sport trio of Martiņs Sesks, Josh McErlean and Gregoire Munster were having their own battle with Sesks leading the way 6.8s ahead of McErlean. Munster had a major slide on SS3 and overshot on SS4 and was 21.4s behind McErlean, who commented, "Takes a bit to get your head around, it goes better than you expect because everything's flat out, bit more commitment needed. "It should be easier (through the second pass) - onboards to look at where you're losing (time)." Rain made the afternoon stages tricky and difficult - each of the four stages in the Finnish countryside had a different winner before Fourmaux won the short Harju street stage as a composed Rovanpera, who admitted he took a few risks, continued to lead. Championship leader Ott Tanak, who had the task of opening the roads, ended the day in tenth - his Hyundai snapped under braking some 2km into SS7 and the front right took a heavy impact after it hit a tree, however, he was quickly back up to speed. Meanwhile, Donegal's Eamonn Kelly/Conor Mohan (Ford Fiesta Rally3) are second in the Junior WRC category - 14.9s behind leaders Taylor Gill/Daniel Brkic, the Irish crew were quickest on SS3.
