Blind UKZN student graduates cum laude with 14 distinctions
Her academic journey began during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, an already daunting time for many, which was further complicated by her visual impairment.
'Navigating this path online, coupled with being blind, made familiarising myself with virtual platforms significantly more challenging,' she shared.
Ebrahim credits her success to the steadfast support of her parents, lecturers, peers, and UKZN's Disability Support Unit. She transitioned from online to in-person learning with the aid of a white cane and screen-reading technologies.
'Despite my initial challenges, I am immensely grateful for the relationships I've built, the knowledge I've gained and the friends I've made along the way.'

Anerley Park revived as Killarney residents reclaim public space
Anerley Park, in Killarney, has quietly transformed from a neglected, overgrown patch of land into a vibrant green space, thanks to a group of dedicated residents who refused to let it fade away. After its original palisade fence was stolen during Covid-19, the park became vulnerable. It soon attracted vagrants, the grass grew wild, and municipal maintenance dwindled. Residents watched as a once-inviting space fell into disrepair. They trimmed grass, removed litter, and planted small gardens, slowly bringing life back to the area. Bradley Kirton, one of the volunteers, said the idea of installing a proper fence soon followed. He reached out to Cochrane Clearvu Fencing, who generously sponsored the new fence, marking a turning point in securing the space and protecting the community's efforts. What started as a simple clean-up, turned into a full community restoration. More green areas have been beautified, and early garden beds are now in bloom. Resident Ismail Randeree believes the changes go beyond appearance. He said the community's presence in the park discourages misuse, simply by showing that the space is cared for. Umbilo Glenwood Education Expo to equip learners
IN a bid to help Grade 12 learners make an informed decision about further education, an educational expo will be held at the grounds of Penzance Primary School on Saturday, August 2, from 08:00 to 15:00. Ben Madokwe, a community leader and programme co-ordinator, said that a number of higher education institutions have been invited to be part of the Umbilo Glenwood Education Expo. He said the aim and objective of the expo is to unpack the process of registration at institutions 'in terms of the points system and the different courses that are offered'. 'We are expecting over 100 young people, mostly from high schools around our area, to come through. We are also calling on those that did not get spaces at higher education institutions last year or the previous years, to attend the expo and get the advice that they need on the way forward,' said Madokwe. Also Read: Attention Parents: Here are three things that will impact education in 2025 Among the institutions that are expected to attend the event are UKZN, DUT, MUT and eThekweni College. Madokwe said that they have also invited members of the eThekwini Municipality's Skills Development Programme. 'They will give an overview of how one can become part of the programme. Information about the learnerships will also be available to the attendees. We want our young people to leave the expo informed and armed with opportunities. They must know all the options and avenues available to them when they finish matric. The expo is free and open to all those who wish to attend,' added Madokwe. Global hunger falls but conflicts and climate threaten progress, says UN
The number of hungry people around the world fell for a third straight year in 2024, retreating from a Covid-19-era spike, even as conflicts and climate shocks deepened malnutrition across much of Africa and western Asia, a UN report said on Monday. Around 673-million people, or 8.2% of the world's population, experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5% in 2023, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report jointly prepared by five UN agencies. They said the report focused on chronic, long-term problems and did not fully reflect the impact of acute crises brought on by specific events and wars, including Gaza. Maximo Torero, chief economist for the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation, said improved access to food in South America and India had driven the overall decline, but cautioned that conflicts and other factors in places such as Africa and the Middle East risked undoing the gains. 'If conflicts continue to grow, if vulnerabilities continue to grow and the debt stress continues to increase, the numbers will increase again,' he told Reuters on the sidelines of a UN food summit in Ethiopia.
