Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad in Slapgate Row Insults Shettys: "These Shettys of the south have defamed Maharashtra's culture, be it in terms of dance bars or ladies bars..."
Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad in Slapgate Row Insults Shettys: Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, who assaulted a hostel staff member in Mumbai for allegedly serving him stale food, also targeted Shettys – a community from the South – accusing them of 'defaming Maharashtra's culture".
He said that Marathis would have never shown any laxity in serving fresh food if they were allowed to run the canteen.
'These Shettys have been playing with our lives for a long time. Today, they tried to play with my life. My stomach isn't good, and I have been disturbed over it for the last 20 years," Gaikwad told NDTV, adding, 'The Opposition shares their views but do they not know that these Shettys of the south have defamed Maharashtra's culture, be it in terms of dance bars or ladies bars. These things have been going on in Maharashtra for a long time and are being done by the Shettys. Shetty is not written on his forehead but the hotel belongs to the Shettys."
When asked if his reaction would have been different had the canteen staff been a Marathi, the legislator told NDTV that Marathis 'would not have made such a mistake".

Who are the Shettys insulted by Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad?
Shetty is primarily a surname used by members of the Bunt community, a landowning and warrior class traditionally found in Tulu Nadu — a region covering coastal Karnataka and northern Kerala.
The Bunt community has historically been feudal landlords, administrators, and warriors during the times of local dynasties like the Alupas. One of the Bunt community's most distinctive features is its matrilineal inheritance system. Their most common surnames are Shetty, Rai, Hegde, and Chowta.
Mumbai is home to over 10 lakh Bunts, including the famous Aishwarya Rai.
From where did the word 'Shetty' originate?
The word 'Shetty' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'shreshti' or 'shreshta', meaning wealthy merchant or nobleman. It was historically a title of respect given to prominent businessmen and community leaders, especially in coastal trading towns.
Most Shettys speak Tulu, Konkani, or Kannada, depending on their region. Most Shettys are Hindus, especially followers of deities like Shiva, Durga, and local deities like Nagamandala or Bhoota Kola spirits. Some Shettys are also Jains, especially in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

What is the connection between Shettys and hospitality industry?
The Bunt community traditionally managed land and feasts, especially during temple festivals and family ceremonies. Their organising skills, hospitality instincts, and culinary traditions translated into the restaurant and hotel industry. From the early 20th century, many Tulu-speaking Shettys migrated to Mumbai, initially working as cooks or waiters. They opened 'Udupi restaurants', which became famous for South Indian vegetarian cuisine.
In Bangalore, Bunt Shettys run many Darshinis or fast-food South Indian outlets and mid-range vegetarian restaurants.
In Dubai, Singapore, USA, and Canada, Shettys have opened Indian restaurants, many focused on vegetarian food or Mangalorean coastal cuisine.
Shilpa Shetty also owns hospitality brand called Bastian.

Belagavi faces renewed tensions over mandatory Kannada signboards ahead of Ganeshotsav

Belagavi: The city, known for its linguistic sensitivity, is once again on edge over a fresh controversy surrounding the mandatory use of Kannada on signboards. With Ganeshotsav approaching next month, the police department is grappling with growing tensions between Kannada enforcement and opposition from Marathi outfits. The situation escalated after personnel from Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) removed a Marathi-only signboard put up by a Ganeshotsav Mandal at Patil Galli near Shani Mandal on Friday. In defiance, the Mandal reinstalled the board on Saturday and called upon other Mandals to follow suit, intensifying the standoff. All this occurred on the day when the border in-charge minister, HK Patil, was in Belagavi. After BCC personnel removed the board of the Ganeshotsav Mandal on Friday evening at Patil Galli, the situation was tense. On Saturday, the office bearers of various Ganesh Mandals visited city police commissioner Bhushan Borase to detail the situation. They cautioned that it was the board welcoming the public for Ganeshotsav. Targeting such boards just because they are in the Marathi language does not send a good message and may also impact the upcoming Ganesh festival in the city, where more than 370 mandals install Ganesh idols in public places for 11 days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mini House for 60 sqm for Seniors with Toilet and Bath (Price May Surprise You) Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Responding to them, police commissioner Borase mentioned holding discussions with the BCC commissioner in this regard. This is not the first incident in the past fortnight on linguistic grounds. The controversy started simmering since the visit of Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman, Purushottam Bilimale, to Belagavi city a fortnight ago. During the meeting with Bilimale, the leaders of Kannada outfits appreciated the govt officials who achieved 80% success in Kannada implementation on the signboards in the city according to the govt guidelines. They demanded achieving 100% success. Accordingly, the KDA head instructed the officials to put in efforts to achieve 100% success. Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) strongly opposed the statement of the KDA chief and submitted a memorandum to the district minister Satish Jarkiholi and DC Mohammad Roshan, urging them to stop targeting Marathi boards in the city. Meanwhile, at the demand of Kannada outfits, Kannada number plates were installed on the cars of BCC mayor Mangesh Pawar and deputy mayor Vani Vilas Joshi, which was also opposed by the MES members. After that, mayor Mangesh Pawar stopped using the BCC car. However, the police found a middle way and installed number plates with both English and Kannada numbers. The linguistic controversy also resonated in the BCC Council meeting held on Saturday, with the MES member demanding BCC documents in the Marathi language. Condemning the demand, Kannada outfits tried to enter the meeting hall in protest. The Kannada outfits also raised the issue with minister HK Patil during an interaction on Saturday. The series of incidents have helped the Marathi outfits to organise and fight back.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray visits Matoshree after years on cousin Uddhav Thackeray's birthday, calls him 'Shiv Sena chief'

MNS chief Raj Thackeray visits Matoshree after years on cousin Uddhav Thackeray's birthday, calls him 'Shiv Sena chief' MUMBAI/NAGPUR: Amid speculation about an alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS for the civic polls, Raj Thackeray made a rare visit to Matoshree, Uddhav Thackeray's residence, to wish his "big brother" on his 65th birthday. Uddhav welcomed Raj with a hug, while the latter presented him a bouquet of red roses. After the courtesies, the cousins spoke for close to 20 minutes. Raj also paid tributes to his late uncle Bal Thackeray's memorial chair on the first floor at Matoshree. Since parting ways with Shiv Sena two decades ago, Raj has visited Matoshree just a couple of times, the last time in 2019 to invite Uddhav to his son's wedding. In what's seen as a snub to deputy CM and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, Raj later referred to Uddhav as "Shiv Sena chief" on X. While political observers said the two cousins meeting second time in less than a month is an indication of a political reunion for the local body polls slated for Nov-Dec, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis downplayed it, terming the visit purely personal. "Raj Thackeray met Uddhav on account of his birthday. I don't think one should see a political angle in everything," said Fadnavis, while speaking to reporters in Nagpur. Responding to an earlier remark on the possibility of the alliance by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut that "whatever is in the mind of Maharashtra will ultimately happen", Fadnavis said, "I feel there is something only in the mind of certain leaders. Else, what's in the mind of Maharashtra we got to know during [assembly] polls." Speaking briefly to the media after Raj's visit, Uddhav appeared visibly emotional. "I am very happy. I am overwhelmed...," he said, declining to elaborate. Later, Raj said in a post on X: "On the occasion of my big brother, Shiv Sena chief, Uddhav Thackeray's birthday, I visited Matoshree, the residence of the late Balasaheb Thackeray, to extend my best wishes." Raj's reference to Uddhav as Shiv Sena chief was also a snub to deputy chief minister Ekanth Shinde, who is president of the Shiv Sena officially recognised by the Election Commission (EC) after the party split. Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and MLC Ambadas Danve and MNS netas Bala Nandgaonkar and Nitin Sardesai were among those present during Raj's visit to Matoshree, which was decked up with flowers and banners to mark Uddhav's birthday. At midnight, Uddhav cut a cake with wife Rashmi and son Aaditya amid sloganeering in a room packed with Sainiks. "All together, No problem at all!" Raut said in a post on X, sharing a group photo with Raj and Uddhav. "Both the brothers did it without saying a word. This is the beginning of the future. This incident united the divided Maharashtra, there cannot be a happier day like today. Therefore, today is a day of joy and inspiration for the Marathi people," Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav said. Political observers said Raj's visit to Matoshree was a reciprocal step to Uddhav's comments that the two cousins had "come together to be together" during the July 5 'victory rally' in Mumbai after state govt withdrew its decision to introduce Hindi from classes 1 to 5. "At the July 5 rally itself Uddhav had said that the two cousins have come together to stay together. Later too, Uddhav made it clear that an alliance was on the cards in his interviews and speeches. So, Raj seems to have taken a step forward by visiting him," said a political observer. "Raj going to Matoshree also has sentimental value for Shiv Sainiks; it is a kind of homecoming. In fact, it has more optical and sentimental value than the two cousins coming together at the rally at Worli's NSCI Dome. In the minds of the Sainiks, Matoshree has sanctity and Raj going there is also an acceptance on his part of Uddhav as a big brother and Sena (UBT) president. With this visit, Raj has kept the momentum alive and not let the curiosity of the reunion die down after the Hindi imposition issue."

Raj Thackeray visits Uddhav on birthday, sparks political speculation

Mumbai, July 27 (UNI) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray visited Shiv Sena (UBT) president and his cousin Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's residence 'Matushree' today to greet him on his 65th birthday, igniting fresh speculation across the state's political circles. The meeting is seen as the leaders' first direct engagement in a significant period. Raj Thackeray arrived at Matushree accompanied by senior MNS leaders Bala Nandgaonkar and Nitin Sardesai. He was welcomed by prominent Shiv Sena (UBT) figures Sanjay Raut and Ambadas Danve. Uddhav Thackeray personally came to the door to embrace Raj, an act widely interpreted as signaling a potential new chapter in both their personal rapport and political dynamics. This visit gains added significance following the two leaders' recent joint appearance on a platform addressing issues concerning the Marathi language and community. The meeting occurred as Shiv Sena (UBT) workers statewide enthusiastically celebrated Uddhav Thackeray's birthday, with Raj Thackeray's surprise presence lending an extraordinary dimension to the festivities. Alongside Raj Thackeray, leaders from various political parties extended birthday wishes to Uddhav Thackeray, including Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut and BJP Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
