ESPN NFL survey is latest illustration that Iowa football is TEU
The flow of tight ends to wear black and gold only to find success at the next level is as good as it has ever been right now, and the proof comes from a recent NFL survey, which saw Iowa dominate tight end rankings.
In a survey from ESPN that polled NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, three former Iowa tight ends appear on the list for the top 10 tight ends in the league. Coming in at No. 2 on the list is one of Iowa's favorite sons, George Kittle.
The San Francisco 49ers star tight end has proven that he has both the ability to block and catch, plus the longevity factor of continuing his high level of play for so long.
Kittle is aging well. He's coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with a combined 14 touchdowns during that two-year span. Fifty of his 78 catches last season went for a first down. His premier blocking remains unmatched, and he's still tough to bring down, leading all tight ends with 14.2 yards per catch.
Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy signed massive contract extensions in tandem this offseason, so they have several years to build upon their chemistry. Kittle caught 83% of Purdy's targets last year.

Right on Kittle's heels is a younger tight end talent who has taken over the league and continues to take defenses by storm. At No. 3 of the best tight ends in the NFL is the Detroit Lions' budding star, Sam LaPorta. After bursting onto the scene in his rookie year, his sophomore NFL season saw some bumps that slowed him down but showed no signs of having a lasting effect on his output and production.
LaPorta's production dipped in Year 2, when he finished with 60 catches for 726 yards and seven scores. He fought through a knee issue -- a hyperextension and bone bruise -- that slowed momentum.
But he's every bit as valuable as he was in 2023, and Detroit had several additional playmakers for whom to find targets. LaPorta is considered a complete tight end with elite feet, niftiness in the red zone and strength to compete every play.

Rounding out the trio of Hawkeye tight ends dominating in the NFL is the Minnesota Vikings' star tight end T.J. Hockenson. After recovering from injuries, Hockenson has responded without missing a beat. He gained more confidence last year, and it showed with his production down the stretch.
Hockenson's status within the Vikings' offense was growing before a torn ACL and MCL suffered on a late hit in Week 16 of 2023 stalled that progress. Up to that point, Hockenson's 95 receptions were the 18th most in NFL history among tight ends.
Returning close to midseason last year, Hockenson still produced three games of at least 68 yards from November to December. But, overall, he wasn't quite at full tilt.
"He was OK -- didn't appear to trust the knee, especially in blocking, which is common for that injury," an NFL coordinator said. "But I expect him to have a strong year. He will trust it more a year removed and that offense is set up nicely for him. And he's got such a good feel for the game that he'll find ways to get catches." - Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
With Iowa owning the tight end position in the NFL, they are the standalone owners of "TEU" with their proven successes. Up next, Addison Ostrenga gets his chance to be the main tight end for the Hawkeyes in an offense that should see some more wrinkles and targets with new QB Mark Gronowski and second-year offensive coordinator Tim Lester.

3 Rams make PFN's top-100 player list for 2025
The Los Angeles Rams have a lot of star power on the roster heading into 2025. From veterans like Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams to young studs like Jared Verse and Puka Nacua. Where those players stand in the pantheon of the league is up for debate, but Pro Football Network's Brandon Austin ranked his top 100 players for 2025 based on their site's model. He ranked three Rams players in the top 100: defensive tackle Kobie Turner, Nacua and Verse. Here's how they all ranked out: No. 50: Kobie Turner Kobie Turner has solidified himself as a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Rams' defensive line in the post-Aaron Donald era. Playing in all 17 regular-season games, Turner recorded 62 tackles, including 35 solo, 8.0 sacks, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble. Turner has looked impressive in his first two seasons with the Rams. Surrounded by other promising young talents like Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, and Byron Young, Turner will be part of a formidable defensive front for years to come. No. 43: Puka Nacua Puka Nacua turned heads with a record-setting rookie season, and the expectations were high heading into Year 2. The former fifth-round pick missed time early in the season due to injury but still managed to catch 79 passes for 990 yards and three touchdowns. Nacua grabbed the top spot in our WR+ rankings last year, thanks to some strong efficiency numbers, including 3.57 yards per route run (first among WRs) and 6.6 yards after catch per reception (15th). Cooper Kupp is gone, and Davante Adams is in, which should take some pressure off Nacua. It should improve his efficiency, as Adams' presence should open up the field. Nacua's connection with Matthew Stafford is clear, and the stage is set for another big year. No. 9: Jared Verse As Verse heads into his sophomore campaign, expectations are understandably sky-high. He is poised to make an even greater impact after a full offseason to work on his technique. With Verse's rare speed, power, and instincts, his sack total could climb in a significant way. The absence of Adams, Stafford, and running back Kyren Williams is somewhat surprising, as these rankings seemed to favor younger players over established starters in some areas. For the Rams as a team, Stafford, Adams and Williams might be just as important as the names listed above. USC football 2026 recruiting class could save Lincoln Riley's job
Lincoln Riley keeping his job after this season is one storyline a lot of people are monitoring. Some analysts are projecting him as the coach under the most pressure this season in college football. While It hasn't been all dark and gloomy for Lincoln Riley during his time at USC, in fact the future looks really bright. One thing Riley can hold his hat on is his ability to recruit. Riley and his staff in 2026 have brought home the No. 1 recruiting class in the country (No. 2 according to some rankings, but not all). College Sports Wire writer Matt Zemek highlights the recruiting class for 2026 as a reason Lincoln Riley could hold onto his job even after a rough 2025 season. "This circles back to Chad Bowden's place in USC football's plans. Bowden has instantly transformed USC's NIL operation and has caused the 2026 recruiting class to take off like a rocket ship. USC has consistently had a top-two class for the past several months. To use a familiar turn of phrase in the football industry, USC has given Lincoln Riley high-quality groceries. Now the coach is in position to cook. "Legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells talked about how an NFL front office asked him to cook the dinner. Parcells wanted a say in how to run a team, which he likened to shopping for the groceries themselves. USC has changed its system to have Lincoln Riley focus more on cooking while other people shop for the groceries. Now that some high-end groceries are arriving, it just wouldn't make sense to not give Riley at least one season with superior talent in 2026." USC is bringing in some of the best players in the country in 2026. Lincoln Riley has shown he can have success with talented rosters, due to some successful seasons with Oklahoma where he fielded teams filled with NFL talent. The more talent Riley has to work with, the more successful he can be. In the Big Ten, the amount of competitive teams is larger than it was in the Pac-12, directly resulting in why USC had a disappointing season last year. Riley has made adjustments to field a better team than last year. With the talent that is coming in the following year, cutting Riley right before USC can reap the benefits would be a huge mistake. Lincoln Riley has brought NFL-caliber coaching to his staff, and he knows how develop college players into high first-round draft picks especially at the quarterback position. This recruiting class will be a key factor in USC ultimately deciding to keep Riley.

NFL insider pumps up Patriots and WR Terry McLaurin trade talk
NFL insider Albert Breer doesn't expect the Washington Commanders to botch their pending contract extension with All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, if the situation remains unresolved and McLaurin is available, Breer believes the New England Patriots would be "very interested" in pursuing him. McLaurin is currently in the final year of his contract in Washington, and he has voiced his frustrations over the failing contract negotiations publicly. He has 77-plus receptions for over 1,000 yards in the last five straight seasons with the Commanders. Last year, he proved to be quarterback Jayden Daniels' top receiving target with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. "This is a guy who has been a team captain for a long time, exemplary character, all of that, so my anticipation is that the Commanders are going to take a swing at getting something done with him over the course of the next week just because it makes too much sense for both sides," Breer said on Arbella Early Edition. "I think the Patriots would be very interested in this. "Now, there's a price point for all of it, and what would that mean? Obviously, he's not going to come here with an unresolved contract situation, so you better be talking about a draft pick, plus a contract. He's a little older than people realize because he was a five-year college guy. He's over 30 now. Certainly, as far as what they're looking for, from a person, from a player—helping Drake Maye—this guy checks every box." McLaurin is exactly the kind of veteran playmaker the Patriots were initially looking for in free agency before signing four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. There is still some uncertainty about what they'll get out of Diggs, who is still recovering from the torn ACL injury he suffered last season. Diggs is one of the hardest-working players in the league, and he looks well ahead of schedule in his recovery. With that said, it would be a huge bonus for the team to add McLaurin, an elite player coming off a highly productive season with a young quarterback.
