Jet2, Ryanair, TUI and easyJet passengers issued Euros holiday money warning
A caution has been sounded for thousands of holidaymakers flying with Jet2, Ryanair, TUI and Easyjet this summer regarding the use of Euros abroad. UK tourists are being hit by foreign exchange fees that amount to a staggering £2.5 million annually, especially as the peak travel season gets underway.
Travellers are advised to reconsider using standard debit cards due to potential extra costs, with experts recommending specialist travel debit cards from providers such as Wise, Revolut or Currensea instead. These cards can offer significant savings by eliminating bank fees and can be over 0.5% cheaper than fee-free cards and more than 3% less expensive than high street banks' debit card options.
Tourists are also urged to steer clear of airport currency exchanges, which are notorious for their exorbitant rates. Personal finance expert Andrew Hagger warns: "Never buy or sell your currency at the airport. You'll lose around an extra £10 for every £100 you spend – just don't do it unless it's an absolute emergency."
Laith Khalaf from AJ Bell echoes this sentiment, stating: "Effectively buying money at the airport is a hefty tax on your holiday for not planning ahead."
The advice extends to obtaining travel money from the post office, another common choice among travellers. While individual post offices may have varying currency rates, ordering online in advance is almost always guaranteed to secure a better deal, reports Birmingham Live.
However, it's crucial to bear in mind that prepaid cards have their drawbacks – particularly when it comes to withdrawing small sums of cash. Certain providers may charge up to £5 for each cash withdrawal transaction overseas, turning it into a costly spending method.
Mr Hagger of the personal finance website MoneyComms advised: "If you pay in GBP this allows the overseas retailer or ATM to use an inferior local exchange rate which can prove way more expensive than the normal Visa or MasterCard exchange rates – this is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion."

A packed flight was due to board a bus to their plane when the female passenger was stopped in the queue. Nikolay Stefanov, a witness to the shocking ordeal, said the woman was told she had to pay for extra baggage because her luggage didn't fit in the holdall. The woman refused to pay as she explained her bag could in fact fit. Footage shows her trying to force her bag into the luggage rack by slamming it in. The bag does eventually fit but the staff still refuse to let her board. She then breaks down in tears as she pleads with a member of the border police and takes a video of the bag which is now wedged inside the rack. Dozens of the passengers were seen watching on from behind a glass door which was all that separated them from the weeping woman. Determined to board, she then starts to bang on the door and ask for help as Nikolay films the sad ordeal. More staff quickly surround the woman as her begging grows louder. Nikolay said the whole situation "escalated quickly". He added: "She was pleading with us not to leave, but we were threatened that the entire flight would be cancelled if we didn't get on the bus, so passengers became frightened and left." Nikolay said many onlookers were also shocked by how the staff treated her with next to no compassion. It has also been claimed that another passenger stood behind the woman in line was removed from the flight. A Ryanair staff member allegedly said that they couldn't let him on because "reopening the gate risked the woman trying to get on the bus". The viral footage soon caught the eye of Bulgaria's parliament. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Grozdan Karadjov has reportedly ordered an inspection of the airport's security cameras. Mr Karadjov is even said to have described the behaviour of employees in the video as "outrageous", reports. He has assured people that the main ground operator will be found and given the "highest fine" and a verbal warning. In response, Goldair Handling Bulgaria insisted their employees acted "professionally and without any physical contact with the passenger". The handling company released a statement to BNT News that read: "All rules regarding passengers' baggage, its permissible size and the fees payable for baggage are determined solely, entirely and unilaterally by the airlines. "Goldair Handling Bulgaria OOD is solely obliged to monitor compliance with these rules by the airlines. "This also applies to hand luggage, as Goldair Handling Bulgaria OOD is obliged to monitor the dimensions of this baggage and collect excess baggage fees. "[Staff] acted professionally and without any physical contact with the passenger." It comes as Ryanair's CEO is considering increasing bonuses paid to staff for spotting oversized luggage. The budget airline currently pays staff approximately €1.50 (£1.30) for stopping passengers with oversized bags from boarding the aircraft. Currently, staff bonuses for doing this are capped at €80 (£70) a month. AN EX-soap star has spoken out after a catchphrase she recorded for a TV advert unexpectedly turned her into a global sensation. Many people might recognise actress Zoë Lister, 43, from her four-year stint on Hollyoaks until 2010 - but to millions more, she's the current voice behind an iconic airline ad campaign. 11 11 11 The voice actor started recording voice-overs for Jet2 in 2019, with commercials played between episodes of ITV series Love Island. But now her famous phrase, "Nothing beats a Jet2 Holiday" - from an advert first broadcast last year - is being clipped and used by hundreds of thousands of fans on TikTok and Instagram. Zoë has given an insight into a whirlwind few weeks after her lines from the popular commercial went viral on social media. The catchphrase has been described as the sound of the summer after social media users started dubbing the track over clips showing Brits brawling abroad and turbulent flights. The craze got to a point where Zoë believed it would spell the end of her Jet2 career. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the mum-of-two admitted she is still dumbfounded by her sudden fame. "He's leaning into it now. It was really funny. It was a good moment for all of us," said Zoë. People would send me videos of terrible turbulence with my really happy voiceover over the top. "It was really funny, but I was really certain that Jet2 were going to rebrand. I didn't know what they were thinking about the viral stuff. "I'm not joking, two weeks ago, I was crying to my husband about the direction of my life. "I didn't know where they (Jet2) were going. I was hoping they had a sense of humour," she said. "And then it's just gone really positive and joyful. And I'm all about the joy. In a video posted to Instagram, Jordan was so excited that he squealed it was "finally happening" ahead of the two women meeting. "It's happening! It's happening!" he screamed, as Zoë entered the studio and gave Jess a hug. While in the studio, Zoë gave an impromptu live performance of her famous voice over while Hold My Hand played in the background. Speaking on the experience, Zoë said: "I feel like the summer has been leading up to this point when Jess Glynne and I are in the same room. "(Capital) asked if I fancied coming on the breakfast show to talk about it. And I was like, all right. "Capital made it happen. I felt like I'd won a competition to be on there. "We met and it was hilarious. She's just a really cool popstar who didn't ask for any of this. "I suggested that I was kind of in her band now, but I don't think she agreed! 11 11 "Then on the show, Chris Stark said he was DJing that night and asked if I wanted to do a live performance of the Jet2 voiceover. When quizzed on the origins of the slogan, she told The Sun: "We usually kind of work it a few times. "Especially the line, um, that's £200 off for a family of four because it is kind of so ridiculous. "We're like, how do we say this without being really patronising? "Because my normal speaking voice is not quite my voiceover. "I'm not selling people holidays in my day to day interactions! "I remember the sound engineer told me, 'you've just got to throw it away. Let them in on it like they're your friend'." Zoë is now looking at launching her own podcast on the back of her TikTok fame. She added: "I'm very grateful that Jet2 are going to re-sign my contract. "That was my number one priority. But I do other things, I'm a writer and an actor as well. "I started to make silly comedy videos on TikTok last year because this is the future now. "So I'll probably just keep putting videos out and see what emerges from that. "I haven't really done any acting for ages because I've had children. You just run out of time to be creative. "You don't have the time or energy to be able to do things in the hope that somebody might buy your script. "But I've been working on a podcast idea for ages. I think maybe now's the time, especially now that people absolutely know my voice. "This moment has just been really fun. Whatever happens is just unexpected and joyful. It's great." 11
