5 next generation Celtic stars as Brendan Rodgers is urged to raid the youths over Scottish Cup Final sweats

Daily Record08-05-2025
It's all about the Treble for Celtic now as they gear up for the Scottish Cup Final on May 24 with only a couple of stops on the victory lap remaining in the league.
Hoops fans are desperate to complete the clean sweep and the call is now for Brendan Rodgers to dig out the cotton wool to keep his squad safe for the big one.
The Celtic boss is already resigned to being without Jota for the end-of-season showpiece against Aberdeen, with the wide man ruled out until 2026.
And he's got some other concerns too, with Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers needing the kid gloves treatment in the coming weeks.
There are also worries about Nicholas Kuhn after the German missed the Rangers stalemate at Ibrox last weekend and punters don't even want to consider the possibility of not having the likes of player of the year Daizen Maeda or skipper Callum McGregor at Hampden.
A fair few supporters now believe this is the right time to have a look at some of the young prospects at the club.
Not that many will know who they are.
It's been a stunning campaign for Celtic but the one thing missing has been the emergence of talent from the Lennoxtown academy.
The Hoops have had a hard core of home grown stars over the years, McGregor, James Forrest and Tony Ralston have been mainstays, comeback kid Kieran Tierney before and then going back to aces such as Shaun Maloney, Aiden McGeady, Stephen McManus, John Kennedy, Ross Wallace and so on.
But the production line has dried up in recent years. Top youngsters are leaving the club even before they get barely a sniff of the first team – with Daniel Cummings the latest to follow the Ben Doak road out of Parkhead.
It's a trend that is causing concern for supporters who have adopted heroes from all around the world, but crave a hometown lad coming through the ranks.
Rodgers has given a couple a taste, but who could the Celtic gaffer turn to in these remaining games – starting against Hibs on Saturday – and who might turn out to be stars of the future?
Francis Turley
Rodgers raved about Irish midfielder Turley in pre-season and hinted the 19-year-old could become part of his first-team plans.
He's been in and around the seniors most of the term but managed just a couple of minutes of top team action as a late sub in the 3-0 win at St Mirren back in August.
The former Glentoran youngster has been a major part of the B team, has a lovely touch and killer pass on him.
It might be time for another dip into the first team this weekend.
Mitchell Robertson
The centre back is the B team skipper and is another one the club reckon has the tools to go to the top and is learning his craft under Stephen McManus.
Has looked the part in encounters beyond Scotland, such as the UEFA Youth League and the Premier League International Cup.
Celts have a whack of centre halves right now but no one is really nailing down the role next to Carter-Vickers. There's fellow youngster Dane Murray – who was involved under Ange Postecoglou – but Robertson could be next in line.
Jude Bonnar
Celtic coaches have been talking up this midfielder almost since he walked through the door as a seven year-old.
Now 19, Bonnar is a key man for the B team and loves to get on the ball and dictate play.
It's an area of the pitch where Celts have an abundance of riches with McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan.
But Bonnar has already had a small sample of pitch time, is banging on the door and would be worth a look in the final dead rubbers.
Colby Donovan
The right back was a stand-out in Celtic's pre-season tour of America last summer and didn't look out of place against top level opposition like Chelsea and DC United.
He also looked the part in the UEFA Youth League campaign. Donovan is a big lad with a great touch, he could handle the physicality of the first team and will be learning a ton from Johnston, and Ralston, who has shown the way from the youth ranks to the senior side.
Sean McArdle
The 17-year-old was a surprise name on the bench at Ibrox last weekend and it got tongues wagging.
McArdle is a hot prospect and made a big impact in the UEFA Youth League with a late leveller against Lazio.
The kid can play in a number of roles, either in midfield or out wide, where he has a turn of pace and a good delivery on him.
McArdle has emerged as a main man in the under 19s and now B team and with Rodgers losing wide man Jota, there may be a chance for the attacker to get his chance.

I had mixed feelings about Gassama signing for Rangers but he's like my little brother and I wished him all the best

As club captain at Hillsborough, Barry Bannan grew so close to the young Frenchman that he came to look upon the 21-year-old as a little brother Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan is the first to admit he's got mixed feelings about Djeidi Gassama's move to Rangers. ‌ As club captain at Hillsborough, he grew so close to the young Frenchman that he came to look upon the 21-year-old as a little brother. ‌ Naturally then, he'd love nothing more than to see his friend smash it in Scotland. ‌ But that's where the Celtic-daft Owls ace is conflicted. Because if Gassama's goes on to fulfil the huge potential Bannan has seen brewing down in Yorkshire, it might just threaten the era of dominance his Parkhead heroes have built up this past decade. It was that dilemma Bannan had to grapple with last week as he bid farewell to the former PSG youngster at their St George's Park training camp, which coincidentally was where Russell Martin's squad were based too. 'I was really close with Djeidi,' the former Scotland midfielder told Record Sport. 'We had a laugh and a joke when the deal was completed last week at St George's Park. I wished him all the best. 'But I said to him, 'If you need any help in Glasgow, don't phone me!' ‌ 'No he's a lovely kid. I've got family members who are Rangers fans and no doubt I'll be looking to him to sort me out with some tickets - but for them, not me personally! 'I got on with him really well, he was like a kid brother to me. There's a big age gap between us and he looked up to me a bit, so I'd love to see him do well - but not too well!' Gassama has signed a four-year deal with the option of a fifth after completing a £2.2million switch to Glasgow. ‌ The Rangers fans were made to sweat on the move being completed however. On Thursday night, leaked pictures emerged from Gers training camp down south showing Gassama cutting about the plush £80million base used by the England national team in Light Blues training gear. Yet the following morning, it appeared Gassama's move north could be in danger as Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri stalled in the hope of luring in bigger offers to help appease troubled Wednesday's cash crisis. ‌ Asked if he knew anything about the delays, the 35-year-old Wednesday ace joked: 'Aye I locked him in his room for a few days so he couldn't get out! "Seriously, I think this is a great move for Djeidi and Rangers." In the end, Rangers got the deal done this week - and Bannan believes it will work out to be terrific business for the Light Blues. ‌ 'Djeidi's done a lot of growing up since he came to Wednesday but at the start of his time here, it took him quite a long time to get to the pace of the English game. 'You could tell he had ability from his first day in training but it just wasn't clicking, he was in and out of the team last season. ‌ 'Obviously, as a young kid coming out to a new country, it was quite difficult for him. 'We had a lot of French boys on the team which helped him as well a wee bit but he was obviously adjusting to a completely different life to the one he'd been used to in France. 'You could see that some days he would come in tired and you wouldn't really get much out of him. But then there were other days when he'd be on FIRE! ‌ "Being the captain of the club, I was really close with him and tried to help him. And crucially, he did listen to the pointers we tried to give him. 'He was a really lovely, lovely kid off the pitch, really nice. Just a down to earth kid who wanted to learn. 'So his first season was hard but you could see there was ability from the off. ‌ 'Then at the start of last season, he came back and had this more mature sense about him. He'd had a newborn baby with his missus, so it looked like he'd done a lot of growing up in that summer. 'I think he was told by the manager that he might have to get on loan before that preseason - but I heard he told the manager something like 'I won't be going anywhere, I'll come back and prove to you.' ‌ 'It was like he had a bee in his bonnet. He went away and worked really hard on his upper body strength and last season we saw him become a different player completely for us. 'He got most of the Player of the Year awards along with Shea Charles, so he had a really, really strong season." But while Bannan sees big things for Gassama's future, he admits there's still some work to be done with the France Under-20 cap in the here and now. ‌ 'I'd say the Rangers fans are probably still going to have to be patient with him because he's still a young boy, only 21," he said. 'I know that's probably not young in football terms but he's still got a lot to learn. 'He's not shy. He's a lovely kid who just wants to have a good laugh. 'There will be games where you'll be frustrated with him - and then there'll be games where you think, 'Wow, we've got some player on our hands here. 'He has got some serious potential and last season we saw that at Wednesday. 'He maybe didn't finish the season as strongly as he'd have wanted but he did play a lot of games last year for someone of such a young age - and he was brilliant. If he can find a bit of consistency then it'll be a very, very good signing for Rangers.'

Brendan Rodgers confirms that Japanese forward Shin Yamada is on his way to Celtic ... but insists he remains in the hunt for another striker

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Japanese forward Shin Yamada is on his way to Celtic Park. He admitted after a 2-0 friendly win over Sporting Lisbon in Portugal on Wednesday night that he still needs more firepower and remains in the hunt for another striker. But he insisted that former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard is not on his radar despite being linked with a return. Yamada, 25, will join the club in a £1.3million move after departing J-League side Kawasaki Frontale yesterday. Rodgers said: 'He'll have a medical over the next couple of days and we'll have a look at him. We've lost a lot of goals, so we need to replace that. Hopefully, this can be one of a number of players we can bring in that aspect. 'He's got intensity and workrate. It's something the scouts have seen. In terms of the club, we will bring in players to develop and players for now. Even though he's a bit older, he's probably one that can give us that intensity and pressure. 'I need to look and see him when he comes in and hopefully he can do well. The idea was to bring him in and assess him. He's a strong boy, but we'd want to add to our front line also.' Asked about links with Edouard, who looks set to be made available by Crystal Palace, Rodgers was less forthcoming. 'I'm not worried so much about a big name,' he said. 'It's about the collective of the team. Big names don't always give you what you need. This team needs hunger, goals and work rate and intensity. Big names don't always give you that, it's about big players. 'I just want players who are hungry to learn but also ready now. There are lots of players linked with us. 'Odsonne hasn't been on my radar, to be fair. I obviously know him but it's about a player who will fit into the structure of the team.' Rodgers was thrilled with his team's 'outstanding' performance after second half goals from Reo Hatate and substitute Luke McCowan earned Celtic an impressive victory over the Portuguese champions at the Estadio Algarve near Faro. They delivered a polished display and controlled possession for long spells against the Portuguese champions. Rodgers told Celtic TV: 'Performance wise it was outstanding. We made another step in our fitness and tactical idea with some of the players coming in. 'Overall it was a very, very good performance against a very good team. Tactically we were excellent with our pressure and pressing and some of our football was outstanding. 'We maybe lacked a little bit in the final third at times just to finish off some great moves but other than that it was a very, very good workout for us.' Celtic lined up with Dane Murray in central defence and summer signing Benjamin Nygren in midfield and created the better first-half chances, although goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel pulled off one save at full stretch. Adam Idah failed to get enough power on two efforts from good opportunities and Daizen Maeda forced a good stop with a powerful volley. Half-time substitute Johnny Kenny earned Celtic a 47th-minute penalty when he beat a defender to James Forrest's cross after a slick and purposeful passing move. Hatate converted as the spot-kick went in off the goalkeeper. Kenny was also involved in the second goal in the 72nd minute with his run and through ball setting up McCowan, who showed good feet before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Thelo Aasgaard is Rangers injury doubt for Champions League clash as Russell Martin sweats over squad submission

Aasgaard could miss Panathinaikos game while Ibrox boss is still dealing with delays to Cyriel Dessrers' and Hamza Igamane's returns New Rangers ace Thelo Aasgaard faces a race against the clock to be fit for their crucial Champions League showdown with Panathinaikos. ‌ The Norwegian international only joined Gers a fortnight ago. But the £3.5million former Luton attacker is already sweating on a knock after limping out of Monday's training ground kick-about with Neil Lennon's Dunfermline. ‌ The 23-year-old netted in a 4-1 win over the Championship Pars. But he's now waiting to be sent for scans on the injury he picked up at Gers' Auchenhowie training base. ‌ And it leaves the Liverpool-born playmaker a major doubt for Russell Martin 's first competitive game in charge. Rangers must overcome the Greek giants over two legs if they are to keep their £40million dream of reaching European football's top tournament alive. Martin will today (Thursday) submit his squad to face the Athens-based outfit to UEFA but it remains to be seen if Aasgaard's name will be included after his injury scare. Losing the marquee summer signing would be a major blow to the boss, who has yet to get to work with last season's main marksmen Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane. Dessers - the club's 29-goal top scorer last term - has seen his return to pre-season action delayed by an ankle knock while £15million-rated Lille target Igamane was held up on his way back from his summer break in his native Morocco by a visa blunder.
