India's Hotel Dream: Why Tech And Demand Are Driving The Story

From my experience, having observed the global travel industry for decades, I can say that India's hospitality sector is not just experiencing growth—it is demonstrating an upward trajectory whose base was prepared by many stakeholders. This story has many heroes; I'll discuss each in greater detail.
Before I move to that, the reality of the day is that India's accommodation industry is expected to reach an INR 1 trillion valuation ($11.7 billion) by the end of this financial year, with projections extending to INR 1.1 trillion ($13 billion) by 2026-27, supported by a CAGR of 10.5%.
This trajectory is not accidental. It is a cumulative outcome of growing domestic demand, conscious effort from the government and an obvious tech ecosystem in the country that has fundamentally changed the dynamics of the industry.
The Demand Story: A Multichannel Push
What often remains under the radar in most external analyses is the significant impact of the "New Indian Traveler." Domestic tourism is no longer merely a contributor; it has become the primary contributor, accounting for a substantial 50% of incremental revenue in the hospitality sector. This internal demand base provides a strong resilience, protecting the industry from the volatility of global economic or geopolitical upheavals (wars, sanctions, pandemics, etc.). While international tourist arrivals have also shown a strong recovery, reaching 9.24 million in 2023 (per the latest government data available), the sheer scale of domestic engagement has been the key highlight.
Also, the industry's thoughtful diversification into other high-value segments—meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), spiritual tourism, and medical travel—has also played a critical role. The MICE sector alone is projected to more than double from $49.4 billion in 2024 to $103.7 billion by 2030.
Additionally, India's Medical Value Travel sector, valued at $7.69 billion in 2024, is also attracting millions of foreign patients, with projections indicating a market size of $16.21 billion by 2030.
This multi-segment approach ensures the market remains attractive for investments and revenue channels remain fairly stable.
'Ease Of Doing Business' Dividend: The Sovereign Push
As I mentioned earlier, the government has consciously tried to create favorable policies. From an investor's perspective, the Indian government's role is no longer just limited to regulation; the industry now sees it as a proactive strategic partner. Over the years, they have cultivated an environment conducive to investment and growth.
The policy permitting 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) under the automatic route in the hotel and tourism sector is a clear signal of intent to create a conducive environment for businesses in the industry. The move eases the investment process by removing the requirement for prior government approval, given investments adhere to established regulatory norms. It has been instrumental in attracting capital for infrastructure development and improving service standards to meet global expectations.
The Digital Backdrop: The Role Of B2B Solutions And OTAs
One part of this growth story that cannot be undermined is the country's sophisticated digital ecosystem that supports the operational efficiency and expansive market reach of India's hotel industry. B2B solutions—including global distribution systems (GDSs), bedbanks, central reservation systems (CRSs), channel managers and mapping solutions—all have played a significant role. These technology players support travel agents, aggregators and tour operators with the centralization of travel content distribution, management of real-time pricing, and automation of complex domestic and cross-border transactions. This digital infrastructure is critical for hotels to manage complex distribution networks and revenue streams.
Online travel agencies (OTAs), while often seen through the lens of commission structures, play an undeniable and extremely crucial role in distribution. Without them, this demand can't be realized. Platforms like MakeMyTrip, EaseMyTrip, Cleartrip and Yatra dominate the Indian OTA market. They function as primary "discovery engines" within the travel ecosystem. Obviously, their substantial marketing budgets, which are usually much larger than those of individual hotels, ensure exceptional visibility for hotels on major search engines.
The Next Phase: AI, LLMs And Depth
The current growth trajectory is definitely impressive, but in my opinion, it is merely a warmup to the next phase, which will be bigger and better and will be defined by intelligent automation and a prominent shift toward conscious travel. While the adoption of advanced AI in the Indian hotel industry remains limited to foundational systems, its transformative potential is yet to emerge.
Over the next five years, as I see it today, the industry is poised for a significant deepening of technological integration, with large language models (LLMs) at the center of everything. You can foresee LLM-powered concierge services that predict guest needs, customizing everything from room temperature to dining recommendations based on deeper analysis of past preferences and their real-time behavior. Generative AI will facilitate dynamic content creation at scale for marketing and guest communication, enabling highly customized, personalized guest interactions. All of it together will lay the foundation for the next generation of growth, which will be massive.
Conclusion
India's hotel industry's growth story thus far is more than a numerical milestone; it is rooted in execution and a well-thought-out strategy to generate sustainable demand. The INR 1 trillion valuation is a telling testament to the effort that has gone into generating robust domestic demand, a strategically enabling and supporting government, and a rapidly evolving technological ecosystem in the country, along with the technology entrepreneurs who have dared to see the big picture.
As AI, particularly LLMs, becomes more deeply embedded in the ecosystem, the industry will be open to the next levels of personalization, operational efficiency and sustainability. India is not just a market; it is a compelling case study of how strategic foresight, policy alignment and technological adoption can come together to create magic in terms of demand and growth in any industry.

Expedia. Skyscanner. Priceline. These days there are countless third-party platforms for booking flights, hotels, rental cars and other aspects of the travel experience. While these websites can make the planning process feel more seamless and convenient, there are some potential drawbacks that are important to understand before you make any reservations. Below, travel experts share the common mistakes people make when booking trips through a third-party service ― and their advice for avoiding these errors during your travels. Travel booking websites can be great for comparing prices across different providers and potentially finding exclusive deals. But you're often going to see the same costs across platforms ― including the travel vendor's direct website. 'You should not assume online travel agencies have the lowest prices,' said Phil Dengler, co-founder of The Vacationer. 'While coupons and other promotions can make it appear that you are saving a lot of money, you should always check directly with the airline or hotel.' When booking a flight, you should check the prices on the airline websites, as well as results on search engines like Google Flights. As you look for accommodations, compare rates on hotel websites and third-party booking systems. 'In many cases, hotels will guarantee the cheapest rate when booking directly with them. In certain situations, third-party booking sites will hide resort fees until the very last moment or put them in an easy-to-miss spot.' 'You should not book airfare with an online travel agency if there is a chance you may take advantage of the federal 24-hour cancellation rule,' Dengler said. The U.S. Department of Transportation has mandated that air carriers allow customers who purchased tickets at least seven days before a flight's scheduled departure to cancel their reservation and receive a full refund without penalty within 24 hours of booking. 'Unfortunately, the flight must be booked directly with the airline,' Dengler noted. 'That means third-party booking sites do not have to honor the rule, which means you could be out of luck if you are looking to cancel within 24 hours. If there is any chance you may need to cancel your flight, check with the third-party booking site before you book to see if they honor the 24-hour cancellation rule.' 'Always read the fine print so that you know their return or refund policy,' said Ciara Johnson, a travel blogger at Hey Ciara. 'For added protection, book with a travel credit card that has insurance in case something goes wrong. If you're not booking for a deal, it's always best to book direct on the company website. It's likely cheaper to book direct anyhow!' Ravi Roth, a queer travel expert and host of 'The Gaycation Travel Show,' echoed this advice. He emphasized being aware of any extra fees or troublesome policies regarding cancellations, itinerary changes and refunds, so you should make sure to read and save your confirmation email with the details. 'I recommend using trusted sites like Orbitz for hotels and Airbnb to book experiences. As for flights, I would try Skyscanner, but while booking, make sure to stick to the major airlines,' Roth noted. 'Sometimes folks can find a super cheap flight, but in the fine print, there is a charge for overhead and checked luggage. I cannot stress enough to read the fine print.' If hotel or airline loyalty points and status are important to you, using a third-party booking site might not be the best move. 'Many online travel agencies let you insert your frequent flyer number or hotel rewards number, but that does not mean you will earn status credit and points,' Dengler explained. 'Some airlines and hotels will allow you to earn status when booking with online travel agencies, but you should make sure first.' 'Third-party booking sites like Expedia, Priceline and Travelocity are also known as online travel agencies, and they are essentially middlemen between you and the airline or hotel,' Dengler explained. 'In other words, your reservation is with them and not the airline or hotel. That means you contact them for customer service instead of the airline or hotel.' So if access to direct customer service with the travel provider is a big deal to you, avoid these third-party platforms when making your reservations and use them as search engines for comparisons instead. 'While the larger online travel agencies have better customer service than the smaller ones, it is still better to talk to the source directly,' Dengler said. 'That is important for both reservation modifications and cancellations. If there is a possibility that there will be severe weather during your trip, I recommend booking directly since there is a real chance you will have to modify or cancel your itinerary.' Because canceling or making an itinerary change can be a bigger hassle through third-party platforms, make sure to pay close attention when you're making your reservation. 'Travelers should just ensure to double-check all of their information, such as travel dates, name and contact information when booking via third-parties,' said Casey Brogan, a consumer travel expert at Tripadvisor. 'Be aware that several budget carriers, most notably Ryanair in Europe, technically don't allow third-party sales of their tickets,' said Marek Bron, a travel blogger at Indie Traveller. 'If you book their flights through a third-party anyway, then this is done through a work-around way that's not supported by Ryanair.' As a result, making cancellations or changes through the third-party site might be more expensive or challenging than it would have been if you booked directly through the airline. Ensure you can actually get an official confirmation with your chosen air carrier or other travel provider when you book through an external system. Not all third-party booking sites and travel agents are created equal. As such, it's important to read the reviews of these services before making your reservations through them. 'Check reviews of these third-party sites, such as on TrustPilot, before booking as some of them are to be avoided,' Bron said. He advised paying extra close attention to mentions of customer service, as you might need this to handle changes or cancellations down the road. 'If working with a travel agent, ensure they have the right qualifications and double-check your reservations with the airlines and hotels,' echoed Jessica van Dop DeJesus, a travel media specialist and blogger at The Dining Traveler. 'Also, look into travel insurance and check with your credit card to see if they provide any travel insurance services.' Pop into The General Store for a post-beach sweet treat. Plan your visit for the fall, when cooler weather descends upon Beaufort and summer crowds have dissipated. A beloved town on North Carolina's Crystal Coast, and the Southern Outer Banks, Beaufort is still somewhat of a hidden gem to those outside of the Carolinas—even though the fishing village's history goes back centuries. Established in 1709, Beaufort—not to be confused with the South Carolina destination—is one of the oldest towns in the state, and much of its charm and appeal are directly tied to its long-standing legacy. Ghost tours detail stories of the pirate Blackbeard, who frequented this part of the coast; a number of homes and buildings in town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and a thorough appreciation of the past is almost tangible as you walk along Front Street, Beaufort's main drag. 'I remember the first time I walked the docks when I was 16—I had this feeling I had never been somewhere so enchanting and delightfully different,' Christina Cuningham, owner of Beaufort Linen Co., tells Travel + Leisure . 'It's casual, quirky, naturally beautiful, and [gives] a feeling you can only explain by being here.' Located on a channel that leads to the Atlantic, Beaufort also appeals to those who want to see the beach, spend the day on a boat, go fishing, or kayak along the waterways. 'If you're looking for a cute place to relax and have fun by the water, Beaufort is definitely your go-to,' says Hailey Mason, the front office supervisor at the Beaufort Hotel. Just be sure to brush up on your pronunciation before you get there: It's 'Bow-fert' or 'Boh-fert,' not 'Bew-fert.' Aerial view of Beaufort Hotel. 'The Beaufort Hotel is upscale and modern with a restaurant worth visiting, 34°North, even if you're not a guest at the hotel,' says Jonathan Edwards, the owner of Port City Tour Company. The 10-acre waterfront property overlooks Taylor Creek, and many of the nautical-inspired rooms come with either their own private balcony or patio where you can take in the views. 'The Pecan Tree Inn is also a wonderful property [in the] vicinity of all the amenities the town has to offer,' says Cuningham. Recently remodeled in 2024, the bed-and-breakfast has seven rooms (all of which have their own private bathroom), and a hot breakfast and afternoon snacks are included in the nightly rate. If you're coming to Beaufort for an extended trip—or you're traveling with the whole family—you may want to consider renting a home. This renovated three-bedroom cottage is located right near Front Street, providing quick, easy access to many of Beaufort's restaurants, shops, and waterfront views. For parties of four or fewer, consider this dog-friendly cottage; it's also within walking distance of most of the main sights in town. One of the first things you can do in Beaufort is get your bearings while walking around the 12-block Historic District. 'It's interesting to see how much history is packed into one small place,' says Mason, who recommends visiting the Old Burying Ground—one of the oldest established cemeteries in the state. 'I would also suggest going to the North Carolina Maritime Museum and checking out the Beaufort Historic Site to indulge in our rich history,' adds Edwards. Editor's note: The North Carolina Maritime Museum is temporarily closed, and a 2025 open date hasn't been announced as of publication time. If you'd rather explore Beaufort with a tour guide, you have a couple of options. The Historic District Double-Decker Bus Tour has passengers board a 1967 English double-decker bus as they venture throughout town, learning about the pirates of Beaufort's past. You can also join Edwards on the Beaufort Ghost Walk, where he says you'll hear all about 'local legends and lore, and find out even more about the town we love.' 'A perfect Beaufort day for us is taking the boys and our puppy to Carrot Island to fish and build sandcastles, and ending the day eating on the docks,' says Cuningham. Carrot Island is an uninhabited nature preserve that can be reached by a quick ferry; Island Ferry Adventures has a service that runs every 30 minutes during the season. Edwards also recommends going to Shackleford Banks via the Island Express Ferry Service. 'You can see the wild horses and find the best shelling spots. You may also see dolphins or porpoises along the way,' he says. One of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Beaufort is to explore its waterways. Start by renting a kayak from Beaufort Paddle, then paddle your way from Taylor Creek to Rachel Carson Reserve, where you can give your arms a break, go for a short hike, and keep an eye out for wild horses and dozens of bird species. It's a really neat place with nothing corporate, no franchises—just local,' says Edwards. Here, you'll find Beaufort Linen Co., where Cuningham and her team sell high-end home goods, bath and beauty products, and breezy linen blouses and dresses. 'For a great outfit, I love Island Proper on Front Street,' says Cuningham. The boutique includes pieces from brands like Agolde, Amanda Uprichard, Elizabeth James, and Tyler Boe. You can also pick up a swimsuit here if you forgot yours at home. 'For great wine, quirky gifts, and last-minute provisions, Beaudega is amazing,' says Cuningham. If you're staying with a friend in Beaufort, swing by the shop for the perfect host or hostess gift—perhaps some locally made cheese and crackers or cute cocktail napkins. 'Of course, you'll want to check out The General Store. It's just what you'd expect from an old country general store—great ice cream as well,' says Edwards. Embrace the nostalgia and treat yourself to fudge or penny candy, or snag some souvenir T-shirts for your loved ones back home. Dishes from Black Sheep in Beaufort, North Carolina. 'My absolute favorite local restaurant is Black Sheep. They make the most creative pizzas. I love trying their pizza special of the week,' says Mason. Cuningham agrees, recommending the restaurant's 'boats of mac and cheese and French 75s.' 'Clawson's … is a classic restaurant in the area and has been around a long time, so you can really feel the history when you enter. They have good American dining and a comfy atmosphere,' says Mason. Come hungry; the menu features hearty entrees, including fried fish platters and shrimp and grits. Beaufort Grocery Co. is one of Edwards' top picks, and the shop, located in the Historic District, is the perfect stop for lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch. You can also order one of the deli sandwiches or the Beaufort Cheese & Fruit Board (complete with the BeauGro pimento cheese) to go, bringing your meal with you on a leisurely bike ride or the ferry to Shackleford Banks. Aqua is another one of Edwards' favorites in Beaufort, and he says the restaurant is known to 'fuse some well-known dishes with local flair and ingredients.' The menu features tapas as well as small and larger plates; expect items like truffle fries, seared crab cakes, tuna poke, and a caprese salad. A person holding a cocktail on a patio during sunset. Beaufort might not be as synonymous with going out as larger coastal cities, but Edwards says there's still a 'great nightlife and bar scene,' one that visitors frequently underestimate. 'There are at least five laid-back bars—Backstreet Pub, Cru, Fishtowne Brew House, The Periwinkle, and Royal James Cafe—within walking distance from each other, and also within walking distance from our hotels,' he says. Given this unbeatable proximity, you won't have to worry about driving or parking. Just don't expect to stay up too late; of the aforementioned drinking establishments, only Cru and Backstreet Pub are open past 10 p.m. People walking past the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort. You could certainly make the argument that Beaufort is a year-round destination, but the locals we spoke with have opinions on the best time to visit. 'Personally, I would say the best time to visit Beaufort would be in the spring or fall. You've got fewer visitors than in the summer, the weather is going to be cooler, and if you love fishing, those are the fishing seasons,' says Edwards. Cuningham also leans toward fall, saying that some of 'best weather' arrives during fall hurricane season. 'It's tricky because you will have to check the weather constantly, but the zero humidity, no 'noseeums,' and amazing fishing is a real sweet spot in town.' While winter in Beaufort may appeal to some visitors—there are some holiday festivities and a lack of crowds—both Mason and Edwards acknowledge it's a quieter time in town. 'I wouldn't say winter is a 'bad' time to visit since we also have a lot of cute Christmas activities, but you do get the most out of the area during the warmer months,' says Mason. Downtown Beaufort, North Carolina. 'To find Beaufort, I would say, find where corporate America ends, and go one town further,' says Edwards. For those driving, that looks like taking either Highway 70 or Highway 101 into the waterfront town. Flying is also an option, though renting a car will still be necessary. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is the closest major airport to Beaufort, around three hours away. There are also a handful of regional airports, including Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) in New Bern and Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) in Jacksonville, North Carolina. While they're significantly closer to Beaufort—around 40 and 62 miles, respectively—flights are limited. Beaufort is small enough to be considered walkable, but having a car is helpful if you're planning to drive to nearby beaches or explore other towns along the Crystal Coast. Biking around Beaufort is another option, and Bike Beaufort offers beach cruiser rentals that come with a bike basket, bike lights, and a bike lock.
