'Devious predator' caused severe psychological harm to his teenage victims
The victims of Daniel Davies, 38, bravely spoke about their experiences at the hands of their abuser, and how his actions had affected their lives

A "devious predator" caused severe psychological harm to three teenage girls after exposing himself and performing a sexual act in front of them. He sexually assaulted two of the girls by touching them on their bottoms and inside the rips on their jeans.
Daniel Davies, 38, of Hengoed, Caerphilly, exposed himself and masturbated in front of the young girls on a number of occasions and touched two of his victims in a sexual manner, despite their protestations. After he was reported to the police, he initially claimed the accusations were not true but he pleaded guilty to the charges against him on the first day of his trial.
A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday heard victim personal statements from all three of the teenagers who had been abused by Davies. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter.
In her statement read to the court by prosecutor Emma Harris, the first victim said: "The incidents have affected me greatly and in all areas of my life. It was in my final year of school and I was preparing for my GCSEs. My most favourite subject in school was textiles which I felt so positive about. Due to what I experienced at the hands of Daniel I lost all motivation in school, fell behind with work and stopped going to school.
"I felt overwhelmed and turned to alcohol which helped me to lose my worries and anxiety.... I spent many nights alone crying so much I made myself physically sick. I feel a sense of responsibility and anxiety and stress from thoughts of seeing him again."
Reading out her own statement to the court, the second victim said: "I have always been a shy and quiet girl. I have never had much confidence and struggle to open up to people and this has made it difficult to talk about what happened with Daniel. He made me feel like I could not tell anyone and I wouldn't be believed.

"He always made me think it was normal behaviour. What happened with Daniel has affected me in so many ways. I have trouble sleeping and each time I close my eyes I remember what happened and imagine him standing in my bedroom doorway.
"I turned to drink and drugs as it was the only thing that would make me forget it all. I have no other way to express what I was feeling, I cannot open to anyone, I felt I no longer belonged and turned to self harming to cope with my feelings.
"I struggle to be around older men, I went into myself and stopped having contact with those around me. I didn't like being touched by anyone. It's affected my schooling but I am now starting to rebuild my life and relationships after what happened. What Daniel did made me feel worthless."
The third victim broke down into tears while reading her statement. She said: "The situation with Daniel has affected me in many ways. I have nightmares of Daniel touching me and chasing me in the car. The nightmares affected my sleep and I became scared of my own body and of people touching me.
"I was unable to take a bath, touch my own hair, I stopped eating and lost a lot of weight. I started to take drink and spent days not being able to get out of bed. I hardly went to school, I felt like I was uncounted.
"I got lost not knowing what to do or say. I worry about seeing Daniel in the community and it makes me feel anxious and scared."
Davies, of Hill View, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault and six counts of exposure. He is also to be dealt with for dangerous driving and driving whilst disqualified following an incident August 20 last year.
The court heard he has 14 previous convictions for offences related to dishonesty and driving. None of his convictions are related to sexual offences.
In mitigation, Abigail Jackson said her client had voluntarily surrendered himself into custody having been made aware by the police and said there had been "no touching of the victims' genitalia".
Sentencing, Judge Simon Mills said: "I have no idea whether you have any sense of shame for what you did to those three excellent young women. You have in each case spoiled their lives. You have pleaded guilty but you still told a probation officer you didn't commit the offences.
"Whether you have got any shame for behaving in this predatory way, I have no idea. When I read your pre sentence report I can detect no remorse at all for what you did."
Davies was sentenced to a total of eight years and four months imprisonment.

He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, sex offender notification requirements and was disqualified from driving for three years and five months upon his release from prison.
A request for a custody photo of the defendant was made to Gwent Police but this was declined due to the "impact on the victim".

The prosecution allege the couple's negligence meant Daniel was "alone and unsupervised" when he entered a yard containing two large, "dangerous", and "powerful" 50kg guard dogs. Recalling the "petrifying" moment she saw Daniel's body for the first time after the attack, she told the court how she had left her son in the kitchen with his older sister while she went to find a pair of shorts for him upstairs. After first stopping in the bathroom for an unspecified amount of time, she was then about to enter Daniel's bedroom to grab his shorts when she heard his sister let out a blood-curdling scream. She told the court that her daughter was crying out: "Mum, mum, Daniel's in the [dog] pen. He is face down and he's got blood everywhere." As the memory came back to her, Bedford reportedly burst into tears, testifying she then rushed to the dog pen to get the canines out of the way. She said: "I sat down on the floor with Daniel and asked his sister to get my phone so I could call for an ambulance. "Daniel was face down on the floor, he had gotten puncture marks all over his neck and he was bleeding. I was petrified and scared for my little boy." The two dogs involved - a Cane Corso called Sid and a Boerboel type dog named Tiny - belonged to farm owner Matthew Brown. However, it is alleged that the couple were looking after them at the time of the attack and should have known the risk they posed to Daniel. Bedford was seven-months pregnant at the time of the attack and struggled to run down the stairs after hearing her daughter's screams. She said that Tiny was standing near the shed while Sid was towering over Daniel and moving towards him. After telling him to get off the boy, she then found Daniel face down covered in blood and marks. She recalled feeling "scared for my little boy" while trying to keep the dogs at bay. CCTV from a neighbour's property showed Daniel inside the pen at 12.50pm, the jury heard, and he was seen moving around inside for a few moments before disappearing from view. At the same time, a dog in an adjacent pen became 'excited, bouncing up and down in animated fashion'. A 999 call was made by Daniel's mother almost 20 minutes later after he'd been inside the dog pen, the jury heard previously, and while it's not known for certain whether both dogs were involved in the attack Sid was the 'likely' culprit. 'DANIEL'S DEATH WAS AN UTTERLY FORESEEABLE CONSEQUENCE' John Elvidge KC, prosecuting, said: "No-one suggests that these catastrophic events were intended or desired by his parents but this attack and Daniel's death were utterly foreseeable consequences of negligently allowing Daniel to enter Sid and Tiny's pen alone and unsupervised." Daniel's parents had a 'long association' with the farm, owned by a Matthew Brown, with Twigg working as an odd job man and Bedford keeping horses there. The couple, who have two other children, leased the farmhouse from Brown in March 2022 after he had been remanded to prison when his girlfriend Deniqua Westwood made a complaint to police. Westwood, who operated a puppy breeding business, moved out and but it was agreed the guard dogs would remain and the couple would look after them. Twigg was paid £450 to attend to the day-to-day security, running of the farm, and the dogs' care. The couple, who also had another eight or nine dogs to look after, including three of their own, stayed on at the farm despite having a home in Blackley, Manchester, when Brown was released on bail, the jury heard. The pair continued to have responsibility for the dogs over weekends when he was away, with Daniel attacked on one such weekend, argued the prosecution. The trial continues.

Daniel Ames, 49, had volunteered to stay behind on the night to wait for the HGV to return, the HSE said in a statement. He offered to act as a 'banksman' to help the driver reverse safely into the warehouse in Rochdale, near Manchester. However, the HSE said that during the manoeuvre the driver lost sight of Mr Ames and when he got out of the cab to check, he found him trapped between the HGV and a row of steel storage racking. Ambulance crews attended but he was sadly pronounced dead later in hospital. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the tragedy happened at around 5.30pm on June 22, 2023. Speaking after the company was fined in the courts, Mr Ames' family said the outcome had left them with 'mixed emotions'. In a statement released by the HSE, they said: "Daniel went to work and never came home again and we have a massive hole in our lives that will never be filled. We are glad the company have admitted being responsible for his death and been handed a fine. "But we remain devastated that we no longer have Daniel in our lives. The incident was reported to the HSE, which went on to carry out an investigation that identified 'a number of failings exposing employees to various risks, including having no safe system in place for reversing HGVs', it said in a statement. "Employees confirmed they had been doing the task for several years but had never received any training, said a spokesperson. "This included one employee who said he had on occasion reversed HGVs into the warehouse with someone else acting as banksman - despite neither being trained to do so. " The HSE investigation also found the company had no risk assessment in place in relation to this work, with the regulator serving it with an improvement notice. Following the incident the company carried out a risk assessment that resulted in a safe system of work being implemented, which meant vehicles were no longer reversed using a banksman." The British Millerain Company Ltd, based on Buckley Road, Rochdale, pleaded guilty to breaching a section of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The firm was also ordered to pay costs of £5,634 at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on July 10. HSE inspector Jane Carroll spoke of a 'tragic case'. She said: "Daniel was clearly popular and respected, but his leadership and dedication to his colleagues was not properly protected by the defendant. A safe system of work was not in place. We will always take action against those who fail to protect people in work." The M.E.N. has contacted the company for comment.
