Tribal gunfight: Water dispute turns deadly in Erbil
A dispute over irrigation rights escalated into deadly violence on Tuesday in Erbil's Khabat district, Iraqi Kurdistan Region, where tribal gunmen clashed with Kurdish security forces attempting to arrest suspects involved in recent armed confrontations.
The conflict erupted after a change in the course of a tributary of the Great Zab River, which disrupted water distribution to nearby farmland, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA). The resulting tension between members of the Herki tribe and rival landowners quickly turned violent.
A large security force was deployed to Qarahanjir village to detain individuals accused of opening fire during a previous altercation over land access. According to a local source who spoke to Shafaq News, members of the Herki tribe resisted with stones and gunfire, trying to block the arrests.
The clashes intensified, with supporters of tribal figure Khurshid Harki reportedly burning tires and using live fire to block roads. Security reinforcements responded, leading to a fierce standoff that left one young man from the Herki tribe dead and at least five others wounded, including members of the Zeravani forces, a Kurdish paramilitary unit.

Turkish artillery targets PKK sites in Iraqi Kurdistan
Shafaq News – Duhok Turkish forces shelled three suspected Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) positions in northern Duhok on Wednesday, a local security source told Shafaq News. The strikes hit areas along the slopes of Gara Mountain and near the village of Kavne Mezha in Al-Amadiya District, damaging nearby farmland and forested terrain, the source reported. No casualties have been confirmed. Turkiye has continued its operations against PKK positions despite a recent appeal by Abdullah Ocalan, the group's imprisoned leader, to end the decades-long armed campaign and shift toward democratic political engagement. On March 1, 2025, the group declared a unilateral ceasefire, which Ankara has since welcomed.

Seven rescued after Greek ship sinks in Red Sea attack
Shafaq News – Red Sea Seven crew members were rescued from the Red Sea on Wednesday after a Greek-operated cargo ship sank following a suspected Houthi attack, Reuters reported, citing rescue-linked security sources. The Eternity C, a Liberian-flagged freighter, was struck on Monday and Tuesday by explosive sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades launched from fast boats. The vessel began listing and drifting before sinking early Wednesday. Four of the 25 crew members were killed before the rest abandoned the ship, with fourteen sailors remaining missing as rescue efforts continue. 'We will continue to search for the remaining crew until the last light,' an official at Greece-based maritime risk firm Diaplous told Reuters. The attack marks the second time this week a Greek-operated cargo ship has sunk in the Red Sea, following Sunday's strike on the Magic Seas, which was claimed by Yemen's Houthis and saw all crew members safely rescued. The Houthis have not commented on the Eternity C incident. However, from November 2023 to December 2024, the group has carried out more than 100 attacks on commercial vessels, framing the campaign as retaliation for the Israeli war on Gaza, where more than 57,000 people—mostly women and children—have been killed.
