Feeling stuck at a task? Relax with choices from this 'dopamine menu'

You are likely accustomed to encountering a range of menus in daily life, but there is one that may be new to you: a dopamine menu.
Mayo Clinic family medicine physician Dr Robert Wilfahrt, an expert in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), explains.
'A dopamine menu is a rebranding of what psychologists or healthcare professionals previously called behavioural activation – ways to get yourself to do what's best for you, instead of what you feel like doing in the moment,' he says.
In this case, the best route to getting that tough task done is to step away from it for a minute, do something else that feeds you energy and then dive back into the task.
The purpose?
To stimulate dopamine, a hormone and neurotransmitter in the brain involved in mood, attention, reward and motivation.
It's also known as the 'feel-good hormone'.
Dopamine comes in many forms – reaching for your phone to scroll through social media is an easy and convenient way to get a bit of a lift, but that's not the only option.
What other accessible activities can bring you joy and a happy brain break?
Examples of healthy 'dopamenu' activities include: Going for a brief walk.
Jamming out to your favourite song.
Making a cup of tea.
Petting your dog or cat.
Lighting a candle.
Reaching out to a friend or family member.
'The idea is to break up what you're doing,' says Dr Wilfahrt.
And if the selected menu item is purposeful, you can feel a sense of reward for small progresses.
When are dopamine menus most useful?
If we're not necessarily enthusiastic about the task we've been assigned, we struggle to maintain attention or interest.
We then risk not meeting the expectation or obligation.
We feel bad about it, get flooded with remorse and have an even tougher time completing the task due to that sense of anxiety.
'It can become a vicious cycle,' says Dr Wilfahrt.
'It can be easy to become avoidant when we're in these sort of doom loops.'
So how can you stop this cycle?
Brainstorm. Make a mental or physical list of things you can do to get recentred.
Dr Wilfahrt says that the more recently rebranded concept tends to be targeted to people with ADHD, but anyone would benefit.

'It's not a bad idea for anybody to know how to best manage energy.
'Sitting still to labour over one idea isn't healthy for anyone.'
And while activities on your dopamine menu are meant to be enjoyable, don't forget to go back to the hard task.
A journey to the dopamine menu is meant to provide a burst of enthusiasm, not to be something that sucks you in.
Consider setting a timer, perhaps for an unusual interval like 13 minutes and 17 seconds.
Enjoy the boost, then get back to the (real) to-do list. – Mayo Clinic News Network/Tribune News Service

An estimated 600,000 adults are currently living with obesity, a condition associated with more than 200 health complications. Despite its prevalence and medical complexity, obesity remains heavily stigmatised—often misunderstood as merely the result of poor personal choices. Individuals living with obesity frequently face discrimination and mental health challenges which further isolate them. This misplaced blame, rather than targeting the disease itself, creates barriers to and slows the advancement of effective obesity treatment. Recognised by World Health Organization as a chronic disease, obesity requires compassionate evidence-based care. In my clinical practice, I see firsthand how many individuals blame themselves when in fact, their biology is often working against them. It's time we shift the conversation from blame to support in the management of individuals with obesity"Lifestyle factors in Singapore further contribute to the challenge. In Singapore's demanding work culture—where full-time employees work an average of 44.6 hours per week, with time constraints and fatigue frequently cited as barriers to maintaining regular physical activity. Bau teachers trained to support student mental health in two-day workshop

A group photo taken during the workshop. KUCHING (July 12): Several teachers and school counsellors from Bau recently gained valuable insights into mental health support through a two-day workshop aimed at equipping educators with practical tools to address growing mental health concerns in schools. The workshop titled 'Strengthening Mental Health Support Skills for Teachers and Counsellors', was organised by the Organisation for Addiction Prevention Treatment and Recovery (Oaptar), in collaboration with the state Health Department and the Bau District Education Office. According to Oaptar president Cindy Biding, the initiative brought together participants to enhance their understanding of mental health, improve early identification and intervention skills, and explore effective strategies for referral and support. 'Key modules included identifying signs of depression, anxiety and stress in adolescents, understanding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties – all while responding with empathy and professional care,' said Cindy in a statement. The workshop also utilised evidence-based tools, role-play activities, and peer learning methods to boost participants' confidence and equip them as mental health allies within their school environments. Participants explored the strong link between emotional well-being and academic success, further highlighting the role of schools in creating supportive and nurturing settings for young minds. Cindy, who also serves as the director of the International Society for Substance Use Professional (ISSUP) Malaysia, noted that the training falls under Oaptar's broader Wellness Champion Programme, conducted in partnership with ISSUP Malaysia. The initiative aims to promote mental health literacy, foster resilience, and support school-based prevention of substance use and other high-risk behaviours.
