Barry FitzGerald: From little things big things grow for PhosCo

News.com.au09-05-2025
'Garimpeiro' columnist Barry FitzGerald has covered the resources industry for 35 years. Now he's sharing the benefits of his experience with Stockhead readers.
There's a book in the dramas endured over the years by PhosCo (ASX:PHO) in its journey to secure its future as a phosphate producer from a world-scale resource base in sunny Tunisia.
But Garimpeiro has to keep today's column to 600 words so the long and short of it is that PhosCo's local partner in the project effectively stole the interest PhosCo held in the joint venture by transferring it to themselves.
It was a horrid period for PhosCo. But the sun is shining again over the company and its phosphate project thanks to legal victories and support in PhosCo's favour from the Government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Full ownership of the advanced Gasaat project now rests with PhosCo, as does tenure to the Sekarna exploration project, both in the north of the country. In short, PhosCo (named Celamin up until 2021) can now get on with things.
The stock traded during the week at 7c for a market cap of $30m on capital expanded by a recent fund raising exercise which powers up work on growing resources of the key fertiliser at the two projects in the lead up to a bankable feasibility study.
A scoping study back in 2022 on Gasaat – it was called Chaketma at the time – pointed to a long life 1.5Mtpa (concentrates) project costing $US170 million to develop and capable of generating annual net cashflow of $US93m in its first 10 years.
Estimated operating costs of $US79/t for the first 10 years of the project reflect the low strip ratio open pit, high grade phosphate mineralisation, and Tunisia's low operating cost environment.
The study assumed $US150/t phosphate concentrates sale prices which is pretty much where the market in the fertiliser is today. It is that sort of potential that has got Garimpeiro's interest up in PhosCo, given its modest market cap.
Big margins
Large scale bulk commodity projects with big margins per tonne don't come along that often, particularly when housed in a junior like PhosCo. And it has got to be remembered that as a key crop nutrient, phosphate is plugged in to the need-to-feed-the-world thematic which is never going to fade.
Lithium-ion phosphate batteries in which purified phosphoric acid are used is a growth market, so much so that China has export restrictions on its big domestic phosphate production to protect its leadership in LFP batteries, as well meeting its food needs.
Lion Selection Group (ASX:LSX), the listed investment company that specialises in the junior space, is a 15% PhosCo shareholder and has been a long-term supporter of the company, riding out the horrid times and now hopeful that the good times are about to roll.
Its managing director Hedley Widdup told Garimpeiro that PhosCo was currently trading cheaply because of the past tenure dramas. 'What PhosCo needs to do now is demonstrate the value that is in those assets,' he said.
His high-level take on PhosCo's projects is that they are enormous – hundreds of millions of tonnes of phosphate which beneficiates reasonably simply to a very saleable product in the global phosphate market.
Having been a long-term shareholder, Widdup said PhosCo's attraction now was what interest could be stirring from the world's big fertiliser companies in Gasaat (currently a 146Mt resource grading 20.6% phosphate).
'It is something that possibly – or should be – owned by a big phosphate company, yet here it is owned by little old PhosCo,'' Widdup said.
He said the big fertiliser companies haven't wanted to wade in to a legal battle in a foreign country. 'Now that's over and PhosCo is at the point where it can start to talk to people about partnerships and everything else,' Widdup said.
'The attraction for us is how attractive this could be for partners. We think this is an opportunity for someone who is big in the fertiliser world.'

Resources Top 5: West Wits on track for Qala Shallows to lift South Africa's gold standing

Qala Shallows gold project is expected to generate US$2.7bn in revenue and free cash flow of US$983m for WWI Geophysics is expected to refine potential high-grade copper-gold zones at GTE's Oval and Oval South targets FAU has started diamond drilling at the Nimba gold project JV in Liberia Your standout small cap resources stocks for Wednesday, July 23, 2025 West Wits Mining (ASX:WWI) South Africa was for many years at or near the top of the list of gold-producing countries but has slipped in the past few decades. In 2024 it was twelfth globally and third among African nations with 98.9 tonnes, behind Ghana and Mali, and well down on leading producer China's 380.2 tonnes. One company with intentions of lifting South Africa's position is West Wits Mining (ASX:WWI) with its Qala Shallows project, part of the broader Witwatersrand Basin project in an historic gold-producing region near Johannesburg. The company's production intentions have been boosted by an updated definitive feasibility study that drastically improved Qala Shallows financials and saw shares up 25% to a high of 2.5c accompanied by volume of more than 95m. Under the base case, the project is expected to generate US$2.7bn in revenue – an increase of US$983m from the original 2023 study – and free cash flow of US$983m (up 88%). Post-tax net present value and internal rate of return, which are measures of profitability, increased by 97% and 53% to US$246m and 81% respectively. Managing director Rudi Deysel said the updated DFS delivered a compelling outcome by reinforcing Qala Shallows' robust value and strong economic fundamentals. Adding interest for WWI, peak funding has been reduced from US$54m over a three-year period to US$44m over a 2.6-year period while the payback period from the end of the peak funding has dropped to eight months from 13 months. Steady-state production of 70,000oz per annum has increased from nine years to 12 while overall production is now 944,000oz over a mine life of 16.8 years. All-in sustaining costs for Qala Shallows increased US$977/oz to US$1289/oz, with 14.3% of the increase linked to the higher gold price assumption of US$2850/oz from US$1850/oz in 2023. The updated study uses a new gold price (US$2850/oz) and an exchange rate of ZAR18 to US$1 based on current Bloomberg consensus forecasts. This is still hugely conservative compared to the current spot price above US$3300/oz. Additionally, the updated mine plan is based on a 1.31g/t lower cut-off grade, which is warranted given the higher gold price environment compared to the 2023 DFS. This has facilitated a 9.3% increase to the ore reserve, which is now 4.6Mt at 2.6g/t for 383,900oz of contained gold, as well as an accelerated and increased production profile as more ore is available for inclusion. Great Western Exploration (ASX:GTE) (Up on no news) While Great Western Exploration (ASX:GTE) had no news today, it announced earlier this month the start of a geophysics program to refine potential high-grade copper-gold zones at Oval and Oval South targets of the Yerrida North project in WA. With the project near the DeGrussa and Monty copper-gold volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in the adjacent Bryah Basin, GTE considers the targets as being prospective for similar mineralisation. Investors share the company's enthusiasm with shares moving 75% higher to a daily top of 2.1c. Previously reported assays at Oval returned highly prospective pathfinder geochemical signatures from multiple potential VHMS horizons and these units are interpreted to be on the edge of potential copper-gold rich VHMS system(s). The company is undertaking a close-spaced and cost-effective ground gravity survey at Oval and Oval South to refine the broad-spaced airborne gravity gradiometry dataset. Results from the geophysics will supplement a large dataset gained from previous exploration campaigns at Oval and Oval South, including diamond drilling geological data, surface (EM) and down-hole (DHEM) electromagnetic surveys. This will be used to build a comprehensive geological model for drill targeting VHMS targets at Oval and the yet to be drill tested Oval South. Great Western anticipates the gravity survey will be complete and data interpreted and modelled by early August 2025. The company had a strong cash position of $3.7m at March 31, 2025, and is well-funded for its forthcoming exploration. First Au (ASX:FAU) On completing a month-long mapping program over a 10km2 area at Nimba gold project JV in Liberia, First Au (ASX:FAU) has moved to diamond drilling with an initial 3000m program underway using a track-mounted rig. This aims to confirm FAU's structural interpretation from previous drilling and to test the westerly extension along strike of the newly generated targets from mapping at Ziyatoya prospect. Measurements and structural interpretations were conducted against geological intersections of Ziyatoya against a previous drill hole by Hamak Gold and its surrounding area. To confirm the structural orientation, twin holes will be drilled adjacent to the previous hole as part of the first round of drilling. 'Following the completion of our legal due diligence at the Liberian Nimba gold project, our team of experts completed a 21-day mapping program, having assisted FAU to derive the initial drill targets,' newly appointed executive director Lei Shi said. 'I'm very excited to lead our drillers from Hit N Drill Limited to initiate this program with the aim to confirm the geological system and potential ore body, supported by previously drilled intersections and our interpretation of the mineralisation identified.' AuMega Metals (ASX:AAM) AuMega Metals, which is utilising best-in-class exploration on a district-scale package spanning 105km along Cape Ray Shear Zone in Newfoundland, Canada, has appointed James Withall as a non-executive director, effective August 1, 2025, and shares reached 4.4c, a lift of 22.22%. Withall was formerly CEO of Rupert Resources and brings nearly 30 years of international experience in mining, exploration and natural resource investing. 'I'm excited to join what I believe is one of the most compelling opportunities in the junior exploration space,' Withall said. 'AuMega is led by a talented and disciplined team that continues to make smart, well-timed decisions – an approach that closely mirrors what we pursued at Rupert Resources. 'The company's strong backing from B2Gold and several major global funds gives AuMega a uniquely supportive and strategic ownership structure for a company at this stage.' The Cape Ray zone is a significant under-explored geological feature recognised as Newfoundland's largest identified gold structure. It hosts Equinox Gold's Valentine project, the region's largest gold deposit (+5Moz), along with AuMega's expanding mineral resource at Cape Ray and Bunker Hill. Bubalus Resources (ASX:BUS) A Victorian Goldfields address is again in demand due to the success of the Fosterville and Costerfield mines with several companies seeking the next ultra-high grade deposit. One of them is Bubalus Resources (ASX:BUS), which has identified some compelling Fosterville-style targets at the Crosbie North gold-antimony prospect within its Crosbie project in the Bendigo region. BUS hopes Crosbie, which is within 20km of Fosterville, can mirror at least some of the success of that operation, and early signs are encouraging with the latest targets at Crosbie North having geological similarities supported by surface rock chip results of up to 12.1 g/t Au and 2.02% Sb. Fosterville was a struggling operation until the discovery of the Swan Zone in 2016, which had a reserve grade of 58.8g/t gold. The discovery transformed Fosterville into a 500,000ozpa producer, in turn elevating then-owner, Canada's Kirkland Lake Gold, into a market darling. Fosterville now produces around 150,000ozpa but still has resources of around 3.3Moz at roughly 4g/t.

Lunch Wrap: Miners muscle the ASX higher, but Telix sinks on SEC subpoena

Miners lift ASX as iron ore pops again Telix gets US SEC subpoena, shares tank
Woodside flexes LNG muscle, Paladin fizzles The ASX was up 0.6% at lunch time in the eastern states, riding a wave of momentum from the mining giants once again. Iron ore has been on a tear since yesterday, jumping another 2% this morning to a five-month high. Traders are frothing over fresh China's supply-side steel reforms, as well as news they're building mega dams up in Tibet. Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO), BHP (ASX:BHP) and Fortescue (ASX:FMG) once again charged higher off the back this news. Meanwhile, cancer imaging stock Telix Pharmaceuticals (ASX:TLX) faceplanted straight into the dirt, down by as much as 16% after revealing it had been subpoenaed by the US SEC over disclosures tied to its prostate cancer therapies. The company says it's cooperating fully, but investors weren't in the mood for nuance; they dumped the stock, sending it to its lowest level since last November. It's not the first time Telix has looked like a stock on the cusp of global stardom. It just launched Gozellix in the US, and the Illuccix pipeline remains strong. But an SEC inquiry, even if it's just a "fact-finding" one, usually has a nasty habit of stopping momentum. This is where things stood at about 1pm AEST: In other large caps news, Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU) climbed 2% after hitting full-year zircon production guidance six months early. Iluka didn't hand out fresh guidance for next quarter though, blaming the mess of global tariffs and trade spats. Woodside Energy Group's (ASX:WDS) quarterly update also packed some punch. WDS said it's pushing ahead hard with its Scarborough and Trion projects (86% and 35% complete respectively) and just offloaded a 40% chunk of its Louisiana LNG venture to Stonepeak for US$5.7 billion. CEO Meg O'Neill called it a key play in positioning Woodside as a 'global LNG powerhouse.' Uranium play Paladin Energy (ASX:PDN), on the other hand, took a hit, down 9% after releasing updated production forecasts for its Langer Heinrich uranium mine. Paladin's guidance, 4 to 4.4 million pounds of U3O8, were decent, but the market had hoped for something flashier. Argonaut had forecast 5.83Mlb, with costs up to US$10/lb higher than its prediction. And over at oil & gas mob Karoon Energy (ASX:KAR), CEO Julian Fowles will be stepping down by mid-2026 as the company prepares to shift its centre of gravity from Melbourne to Brazil and the US. Karoon's board is now hunting for a Houston-based replacement, and its shares dipped 0.6% on the news. First Au (ASX:FAU) has kicked off a 3000m diamond drilling program at its Nimba Gold Project in Liberia, following a month-long mapping campaign led by director Lei Shi. The drilling aims to confirm structural interpretations around a key Hamak Gold hole, and test new targets spotted during mapping. It's targeting the dip, depth and strike of potential gold zones, with core re-logging from previous holes also underway. Pilot Energy (ASX:PGY) has kicked off a formal farmout process for its massive WA-481P permit in the offshore Perth Basin, targeting a partner to help drill the 1.1 TCF Leander Gas Prospect. The prospect's ready to go, with direct access to WA's domestic gas market via existing infrastructure. With gas demand rising and delays hitting rival projects, Pilot reckons it's got a fast-track, high-impact play on its hands. Australia's only 1992 McLaren F1 is up for sale

There is only one McLaren F1 in Australia, and it is up for sale with a staggering price tag. This ultra-rare McLaren F1 was once the fastest production car in the world, and it remains one of the most coveted supercars ever built. Australia's original McLaren has a remarkable backstory. Originally owned by former Coca-Cola Amatil chief executive Dean Wills, the car was regularly exercised in secret at a private circuit north of Sydney once known as 'The Farm', now operating as '70 North'. The car is rumoured to have been crashed heavily during a test drive by a mechanic that caused more than $1 million in damage, according to a report in Wheels magazine. Now owned by Melbourne businessman Barry Fitzgerald, the model has been listed for sale. Just 106 McLaren F1s were built between 1992 and 1998, and only 64 of those are road-legal, making this of the most exclusive vehicles in the world today. This revolutionary machine, famous for rewriting the rule book on performance and design, is currently listed for sale on the JamesEdition website with an eye-watering price tag of $37,664,120. The McLaren F1 is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. Created by the legendary Formula 1 engineer Gordon Murray, the F1 was designed with the singular goal of becoming the greatest driver's car ever made. Leveraging McLaren's Formula One expertise, the team reimagined every aspect of supercar design by prioritising lightweight materials, driver-focused engineering, and eliminating compromises. The carbon fibre chassis alone took over 3000 hours to build. The throttle pedal was hand-assembled from six precision-finished titanium components. Even the instrument needles were hand-machined and painted. Every detail in this car was carefully crafted, right down to the cabin, which was individually tailored for each owner. Under the bonnet sits a 6.1-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine developed by BMW, producing 461kW and pushing the car to a record-breaking top speed of 386km/h – making it the fastest naturally aspirated production car ever built. To protect the engine from extreme heat, the bay was lined with genuine gold foil, selected for its excellent heat-reflective properties. It's almost impossible to damage an F1 to the point of it being a complete write-off, as McLaren is always willing to conduct repairs. This is because the stratospheric prices of F1s make any repairs justifiable, no matter how extensive. The sale is being handled by ELITA, a global expert in discreet, high-end car sales. They are known for connecting collectors with rare vehicles that are seldom made publicly available. Its listing reads: 'Owning an F1 is not about acquiring a vehicle; it's about becoming part of a legacy defined by Formula 1 DNA, Le Mans dominance, and automotive immortality.' 'Only 106 McLaren F1s were ever built; and just 64 road cars. Today, fewer still remain in the kind of condition worthy of the original vision. Most reside in private collections or museums, making availability of any example a global event. 'This isn't just the apex of the analog supercar; it's a time capsule from the golden age of performance. No turbos, no traction control: only raw, mechanical brilliance tuned to perfection.'
