Driver running late for work killed wife in tragic crash

Independent2 days ago

A motorist killed his wife in a head-on crash after he claimed he was running late for work.
Asen Kurtev was driving his wife Sofka Mitkova and three colleagues to work as he overtook several vehicles as he travelled to Spalding on 4 March last year.
Kurtev, 46, carried out 'an obviously highly dangerous' overtake on the A16 outside Boston in Lincolnshire and crashed into an oncoming Volkswagen Scirocco.
His colleagues were seriously injured in the crash while his wife Sofka, 39, suffered fatal chest injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen also sustained multiple serious injuries in the collision including fractures, and has since undergone surgery for his injuries.
Kurtev was jailed at Lincoln Crown Court on Thursday for 10 years and nine months, for causing death by dangerous driving, with concurrent sentences of 36 months for three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in relation to three backseat passengers in his Vauxhall Zafira.
In addition, he was handed a 27-month concurrent sentence for causing serious injury to the driver of the oncoming vehicle he crashed into.
Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight KC told Kurtev that the loss of his wife is a 'pain and punishment you will carry forever'.
The court heard husband and wife passengers Kiril Ribarov and Gayla Ribarova, who were in the back of Kurtev's car alongside Dimitar Dimitrov, told the defendant to slow down as he overtook multiple vehicles while driving them to work at JZ Flowers at about 6.50am.
Prosecution counsel Tony Stanford said it was Kurtev's job to pick up workers and drive to them to the factory for the 7am shift, but he was 25 minutes late collecting them, and Mr Ribarov told police it was clear he was 'trying to catch up on his lateness'.
He described Kurtev's behaviour, including overtaking a line of four or five cars on the A16, in a manoeuvre lasting around 15 seconds on the busy road, as 'suicide, kamikaze driving'.
Judge Sjolin Knight said that, like many Lincolnshire A-roads, the A16 was flat and straight with good visibility, and that the conditions were 'not such that there was any point in overtaking as there was a line of traffic'.
Kurtev's car was 'wholly in the other carriageway' when he crashed head on into a Volkswagen Scirocco being driven by Cameron Marshall, who was left with fractures to his lower spine and wrist, and damage to his spleen and upper bowel, and required surgery to his abdomen and his forearm, which needed to be realigned.
In a victim impact statement, Mr Marshall, who was 22 at the time and a professional HGV driver, said the crash was 'never something I ever thought I would experience', and the effect his injuries have had on his family has been 'truly heartbreaking'.
All three of Kurtev's passengers, none of whom were wearing a seat belt because they reportedly did not work, were seriously injured, and Mr Ribarov said he and his wife have had to return to Bulgaria.
He said the crash, which left him with a fractured eye socket, cheekbone, kneecap and wrist, had caused 'horrendous stress', adding: 'We were in a foreign country with no income and no support.
'When this happened, we came to England to work, but had to return to Bulgaria because we couldn't work. Everything in Bulgaria is so expensive, I can't support my family.'
Representing Kurtev, who pleaded guilty to the offences on Monday, which was due to be the first day of his trial, John McNally said he never would have carried out the overtake if he had seen Mr Marshall's car coming towards him.
He said: 'He is truly sorry for what happened, he never meant for it to happen.
'He realises the failings were his and he regrets what has been caused to everybody and knows it is a daily reminder, from the destruction of his family life, of what he did.
'It will weigh heavily on him.
'In custody he will be largely alone as a man with limited skills and limited language.'
Addressing Kurtev, of Carlton Road in Boston, who listened to proceedings via a Bulgarian interpreter, Judge Sjolin Knight said: 'The small car coming towards you was driven by 22-year-old Cameron Marshall, a professional HGV driver.
'The drivers of the three cars behind yours saw his car, you should have seen it too, particularly as you were the one pulling out to drive on his side of the road.
'Whether you saw it and thought you could get back in before he reached you, or you didn't see it, I cannot determine.
'The traffic conditions were not such that there was any point in overtaking, there was a line of traffic.
'The amount of traffic meant this was a manoeuvre you never should have attempted because there was no safe way back into the line of traffic.
'Witnesses inside and outside the car described it as suicidal, kamikaze and crazy. It is not a safe manoeuvre that went wrong.'
She added: 'You were the one who had embarked on an obviously highly dangerous manoeuvre and the result was a head-on collision.
'The results of that head-on collision have been catastrophic.'
The judge said Kurtev may face being automatically deported after his sentence, of which he must serve two-thirds, and was banned from driving for five years upon his release.

Five children taken to hospital after tree falls in Essex park

Five children have been taken to hospital, including two with serious injuries, after a tree fell in a seaside park in Essex on Saturday. Essex police said they were called to Chalkwell park in Southend-on-Sea shortly before 3pm, where they found 'a number of casualties'. An East of England ambulance service spokesperson said: 'Two children were transported by road to Southend University hospital. 'A further three children were later transported by road to the same hospital with minor injuries.' Police advised the public to avoid the area. Adam Hutchins, 47, told the EssexLive website: 'I heard there were kids playing on the tree. They heard a big crack. 'It must have [been] pretty loud. They went running over and there were kids underneath the tree. 'All the cricket guys ran over and tried to loft the tree up. I think it's one of the oldest trees. It had metal stands propping it up.' David Burton-Sampson, Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, described it as a 'worrying incident', adding: 'My thoughts are with those affected.' Daniel Cowan, the leader of Southend's city council, said on Saturday: 'I'm aware of this very serious incident. We're working with Essex police, the ambulance service and fire service, who are still at the scene. 'I do understand that a tree has fallen, there's a number of casualties and we're just asking the public to avoid the area while those services carry out their work, and my thoughts are with those affected.'

Palestine Action are not terrorists. The RAF is just grossly incompetent

One can see why the Government is proposing to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. That anyone could enter the RAF base at Brize Norton, one of the most significant we have, and smear red paint on planes was deeply humiliating. Once, the commanding officer of the base would have resigned immediately; the security officer would have been moved to the cookhouse, if he was lucky; and the Defence Secretary would have offered his resignation. But no-one resigns these days, so branding the intruders 'terrorists', as if they were some ruthless group trained to outwit military professionals, with death and destruction their aim, makes them sound all the more formidable, and their victims all the more helpless. It is an unconvincing cover for the sort of grotesque incompetence that characterises our public sector and public services. That was the RAF; the next day it was the Metropolitan Police unable to prevent an epidemic of daylight robbery on the streets of the West End; the next NHS maternity services that humiliate and degrade women giving birth. What Palestine Action, however organised and bonkers and loathsome they are, did was not terrorism: it was vandalism. You might as well call football hooligans terrorists, or the groups of louts who on hot summer evenings riot because they are bored and the police upset them by seeking to restore order. Terrorism is a truly abhorrent, lethal, wicked and repulsive thing: chucking paint over planes and ridiculing the RAF and the Government in the process does not even begin to compare with it. This devaluation of a word with a precise meaning is highly dangerous. Lord (Toby) Young, in his excellent work for the Free Speech Union, has disclosed that Prevent – the increasingly preposterous, Left-leaning body that tries to stop terrorism at its roots – has done research that suggests 'red flags' for spotting potential far-right terrorists are people who like, among other things, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, GK Chesterton's poems, The Bridge On the River Kwai, The Dam Busters and Yes, Minister. Where do I give myself up? Many of us remember real terrorism, perpetrated by real terrorists: the Birmingham and Guildford Bombings; the Hyde Park Bombings; murders in Manchester, both by the IRA in 1992 and 1996 and, a generation later, an Islamic extremist who killed 22 at the city's Arena in 2017; the massacre on 7/7, which killed 52 innocent people in 2005; and if that's not enough, Lockerbie. I could go on. Does all that utter horror compare with exposing the pitiful security at Brize Norton and slapping paint on planes? Of course not. This seemed to start in 2016, after the abominable murder of Jo Cox, the Labour MP, by Thomas Mair, a recluse and weirdo unknown to the authorities. He was rapidly branded a 'terrorist' by politicians when it became clear he had a deeply unhealthy obsession with the far-right and its doctrines. He was a member of no terrorist organisation. What he did was appalling, but he was no more a terrorist than any politically-motivated psychopath acting alone. Ms Cox's murder came days before the Brexit vote. Those who branded Mair a 'terrorist' (and the authorities rapidly followed suit) were surely not trying to associate him with the Brexit movement – were they? On Friday, four people were arrested over the Brize Norton incident. If convicted, they must suffer exemplary punishment. However, I hope the Government accepts its responsibilities for such pathetic security. And I also hope that in future it reserves the term 'terrorist' for those who really merit it, rather than diluting it for idiotic troublemakers or lethal misfits.

Kneecap and Bob Vylan comments at Glastonbury investigated by police

Police are assessing videos of comments made by Bob Vylan and Kneecap at Glastonbury to decide whether any offences may have been committed. In a post on social media Avon and Somerset Police said: 'We are aware of the comments made by acts on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival this afternoon. 'Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.' The videos being assessed are understood to include footage of punk duo Bob Vylan and Irish rap trio Kneecap. The punk duo performed on the stage before Kneecap and led the crowd in chants of: 'Free, free Palestine' and: 'Death, death to the IDF'. During Kneecap's set, band member Naoise O Caireallain, who performs under the name Moglai Bap, said: 'The Prime Minister of your country, not mine, said he didn't want us to play, so f*** Keir Starmer.' The band also led crowds in chants of: 'Free Palestine'.
