SPANISH SUN I found a 'secret' paradise 30 minutes from Benidorm – it's nothing like the busy strip but still has double G&Ts for £5
AS a showbiz journalist at The Sun, my weeknights are often spent celeb-spotting at the latest A-list attraction or dancing into the early hours of a sold-out gig.
So when my friend suggested a spontaneous five-night holiday in Spain, I jumped at the chance for somewhere to rest and recharge for a busy summer ahead.

With sizzling temperatures of 30C in June and just a two-hour flight away, Costa Blanca seemed like the perfect fit.
Nestled in Vall de Pop's Xaló, a mere 30 minutes from Benidorm, we discovered paradise - a nine-bedroom rural retreat surrounded by mountains and vineyards.
Stepping into Cuatre Finques feels like stumbling upon a secret destination.
A 20-minute walk from the old town's cobbled streets lies a Spanish-style finca offering privacy, indulgence and a unique holiday experience.

For as little as £136 per night, guests can enjoy the comfort of a stylish bedroom with a balcony and access to the boutique hotel's sun-soaked swimming pool.
It's a haven of peace and tranquillity from the outside world, just as owner Nicola intended when she designed, planned and built Cuatre Finques ahead of its opening in 2014.
The mum of two, originally from Edinburgh, wanted to create a home from home - offering guests the opportunity to unwind in luxury for a fraction of the price.
Every morning we woke up to breakfast on the terrace before wandering over to the 'honesty bar' by the pool, which is well-stocked - or at least it was, before we arrived.

Sipping tasty, yet cheap cava on a Love Island-style sunbed at midday, we plotted our activities for the days ahead.
The concierge can help to make bookings - with wine tasting, hiking, bike hire, massage, yoga and boat hire all being popular pastimes outside of the villa.
Benidorm issues smoking ban on two popular beaches in crackdown
We wandered down to the old town to explore the traditional Valencian architecture and Xaló's quaint Saturday flea and farmers' markets.
It's a far cry from your typical Benidorm break.

In the evenings, a couple of small bars offered up a fun and friendly atmosphere to try out a Spanish 'chupito', also known as a strong local shot that hits the back of your throat.
An enormous double measure of Gin and Tonic will set you back just £5 in comparison to spending three times that in London.

In fact, I told the bartender he'd mistakenly only charged me for one when I'd ordered two - and he looked as confused as I was.

It's the same when it comes to eating out for traditional Spanish food.
Setback from the notorious tourist hotspots, the bang for one's buck makes the bill arriving a much more pleasant experience than in Barcelona, Madrid or Ibiza.
Be warned though, it's easier to find a shop open in the midday sun than it is to grab a taxi.
Uber is but a fantasy, with word of mouth appearing to be the most effective way to find a driver.

Hiring a car is advised for peace of mind and the chance to explore more restaurants outside the small town by travelling up into the mountains for spectacular views.

Despite the taxi roulette and the intention for early nights and hangover-free mornings, a last-minute trip to nearby party neighbourhood Dénia saw us head to a boat nightclub in port called Sounders.
Aside from the taxi wait, the evening proved how perfectly positioned we were to enjoy the quietness of a relaxing break so close to a more city-like experience.
One of our most favourite evenings during the holiday was however, when we stayed 'home' to eat at Cuatre Finques.
Once a week, the chef prepares a group tapas dinner for all guests to enjoy together alongside live music.

The destination is also a popular venue for yoga retreats as well as large, extended families who want the atmosphere of a villa with the amenities of a hotel

Nine courses of fresh seafood, local cuisine and countless bottles of wine later, a mix of English, Scottish, Spanish and German diners became friends.
It's moments like this that make the hotel extra special - and what attracts Spanish holidaymakers flocking to the Costa Blanca for a weekend getaway.

Hosting just 18-20 guests at full capacity, Cuatre Finques can also be hired for exclusive use by a large group.
It's a popular venue for yoga retreats as well as large, extended families who want the atmosphere of a villa with the amenities of a hotel.
I thought twice about revealing this hidden sweet spot to the world, but it's too good not to share.
One man even moved to Benidorm after one visit saying that it's paradise with £1 beers and cheap bills.

What is EU's hand luggage ban and how will it affect Brits?
If you're travelling abroad this year, particularly via the EU, you might wonder what the proposed hand luggage fee ban is and how it could affect you and your travel plans. This week, reports have suggested that the European Union is looking to ban airlines from charging passengers for hand luggage under 7kg and to standardise cabin bag dimensions across the board. Here's what we know about the possible change and how it could affect those travelling to Europe from the UK. What does EU hand luggage fee ban mean for Brits? Travel agency has shared insights from James Spalding, UK Head of Aviation, on how this change could affect customers. Hand luggage policies are different depending on the airline you fly with meaning those who don't travel often need to brush up on the rules before going away. James Spalding said: 'If the EU introduces a standard size and removes fees for small cabin bags, it could bring greater consistency across the board. That means fewer unexpected charges and a simpler way to compare fares between airlines. 'That said, it's unlikely airlines will absorb the cost entirely. It may be built into the base fare instead. While that could mean slightly higher upfront prices, many travellers will welcome the added transparency - knowing exactly what's included in the ticket from the outset.' The BBC added: 'Under the new rule, travellers would be allowed to bring one cabin bag measuring up to 100cm on board their flight, as well as an under-the-seat personal item with a maximum size of 40x30x15cm at no additional cost. 'The proposed law still requires approval from 55% of EU member states, but if adopted following negotiations starting in July 2025, the new rules would extend to all flights within the EU, as well as routes to and from the EU.' Your rights if your flight is cancelled or delayed How will the EU hand luggage fee ban affect prices? James explained: 'Over recent years, many European carriers have introduced fares without hand luggage to offer more flexibility and competitive entry-level pricing. 'If that option is removed, airlines may explore other ways to offer choice — for example, by introducing or expanding 'priority' options for early boarding or guaranteed cabin space. 'Cabin storage is always limited, especially on full flights. We already see some airlines asking passengers to check bags at the gate when overhead lockers are full. 'If more passengers bring similar-sized bags onboard under a single rule, it could lead to more operational changes and a bigger focus on how baggage is managed at boarding.' Do I need travel insurance? How can you get a good deal if prices go up? If prices rise, James says 'comparison is key.' Using platforms like will mean travellers can compare prices and 'see what's included in their fare - from cabin bags and checked luggage to seat selection.' Use search filters so you can select your preferences when booking your holiday so you can 'avoid unexpected costs at checkout' and find the flights and holiday deals that suit you. Will UK airlines ban hand luggage fees? Since the UK operates outside the EU now, you might be wondering how this hand luggage fee change could affect you and your holiday. James said: 'That's an interesting one. If the UK doesn't adopt the same rule, there could be a bit of a mismatch - especially on flights between the UK and the EU - with different policies for the outbound and return legs. That might cause some confusion for passengers and create complexity for airlines. Your passport is your most important travel document - it's worth taking your time to get right! Before submitting your application check: - your photo meets all requirements - all personal details are correct - supporting documents are ready - payment details are accurate — His Majesty's Passport Office (@HM_Passport) June 16, 2025 'To simplify things, some carriers may choose to align their policies across both EU and UK routes, even if it's not a formal requirement. We'll have to wait and see how the industry responds.' What are the hand luggage sizes for Ryanair, Jet2, easyJet and more? Each airline has different allowances for hand luggage, here's what we know. Ryanair's website says: "All our fares include one small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag (40x20x25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you." easyJet says passengers can bring one small cabin bag: Maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm (including any handles and wheels) Includes items like a small trolley case, handbag, rucksack and laptop bag, but please check dimensions Needs to fit under the seat in front of you Maximum weight 15kg. You need to be able to lift and carry the bag yourself Recommended reading: Jet2 says: "You can bring one piece of hand luggage onboard free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles." Here's what you're allowed to bring on board when flying with British Airways: 1 cabin bag, max. 23kg (51lbs), up to 56×45×25cm (22 x 18 x 10in) 1 handbag or laptop bag, max. 23kg (51lbs), up to 40×30×15cm (16 x 12 x 6in) Wizz Air allows two types of bags to be brought onboard, according to its website rules: It allows everyone one small carry-on bag, which should be placed under the seat, maximum size: 40 x 30 x 20 cm, 10kg. Exceeding these dimensions will result in additional fees being charged.

EasyJet horror flight as passengers become 'abusive' after peeing in aisle
EasyJet said a group of passengers had become 'abusive and threatening' during the flight from Birmingham to Tenerife - and were met by police who stormed the plane on arrival A disruptive airline passenger is said to have urinated in the aisle of an EasyJet flight from Birmingham to Tenerife, sparking a mid-air emergency that forced crew to call ahead for urgent police assistance. The shocking scenes unfolded aboard flight EZY6607 on Wednesday, July 2, prompting air traffic control to give the aircraft priority landing at Tenerife South Airport, where it touched down shortly before 3:30am. Local newspaper Canarian Weekly reported that the EasyJet crew had requested "urgent assistance" following "trouble on the flight to the summer hotspot," with a "mid-flight emergency" causing "signifcant disturbance" on board. The airline confirmed the passengers had become "abusive and threatening" during the journey from Birmingham Airport. On arrival, police boarded the plane to deal with the unruly group. A spokesperson for easyJet said: "We can confirm that flight EZY6607 from Birmingham to Tenerife on 2 July was met by police on arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard. "easyJet's crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations. They acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority, and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard." It comes weeks after police stormed an EasyJet plane which was plunged into chaos by a rowdy group of Brits celebrating a stag do in May. Two men allegedly vaped, drank heavily and abused crew, leaving fellow passengers fuming. Despite six warnings from staff, the chaos continued with fellow travellers onboard the flight from Gatwick to Marrakesh left seething as the pilot announced he would be landing in Faro, Portugal, instead. A witness claimed: "The men were vaping in their seats and toilet, drinking heavily and to my opinion already drunk or close to when boarding. They were being abusive towards staff on the flight and I think they had an undertone of homophobia toward the head steward." An easyJet spokesperson said the flight, from London Gatwick to Marrakech on May 19, "diverted to Faro and was met by police upon arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard". Once the passengers had left the aircraft, the flight then continued to Marrakech. "Our cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard."

'Stunning' Scots town Emma Raducanu 'fell in love with' for its beautiful sights
The tennis star says she fell in love with the landscape of the Perthshire town during a visit in 2024. Emma Raducanu has been making headlines again at Wimbledon, powering into the third round after an impressive straight-sets victory over former champion Marketa Vondrousova on Wednesday night. But while her on-court form is grabbing attention, it's her off-court love for Scotland that's also winning hearts, Scottish Daily Express reports. The 21-year-old tennis star recently reflected on her 2024 trip to Perthshire, where she attended the glittering Dior Cruise show at Drummond Castle in Crieff, and fell head over heels for the region's peaceful charm and breathtaking beauty. Speaking to the BBC, Raducanu shared her admiration for the Scottish landscape. 'I really fell in love with it up there,' she said. 'I was at the Gleneagles, which was stunning, the golf course. I did a run before the show. It was just stunning to take in all the sights. For me, my retreat is greenery. I think Scotland has just vast, amazing, beautiful greenery. It was beautiful.' She added: 'I think Drummond Castle, where the show was at, is stunning. The lawns were so perfectly manicured, it was beautiful.' Her visit coincided with one of the most star-studded events ever held in the Scottish countryside. Dior's showcase drew in major names from around the world, including Hollywood heavyweights Jennifer Lawrence and Anya Taylor-Joy. But it was Crieff's natural splendour and quiet sophistication that stole the show for Raducanu. Crieff, a picturesque market town nestled in the heart of Perthshire, has become a thriving tourism hub in recent years. Known for its whisky heritage and literary history, it's home to Scotland's oldest lending library, the town continues to enchant visitors with its unique mix of history and hospitality. The centrepiece of Raducanu's visit, Drummond Castle, is among the most celebrated sights in the region. While the castle itself is not open to the public, the Italian-style gardens are widely regarded as some of the finest in Europe. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! As VisitScotland describes: 'A mile of beech-lined avenue leads to a formidable ridge-top tower house. Enter through the woven iron portcullis and suddenly revealed is a magnificent Italianate parterre. "First laid out in the early 17th century and redesigned and terraced in the 19th century, the gardens you see today were replanted in the 1950s, preserving features such as the ancient yew hedges and the copper beech trees planted by Queen Victoria, to commemorate her visit in 1842. The gardens featured in the United Artists film Rob Roy.' Just a short drive away lies Gleneagles, one of the most prestigious golf resorts in the world, and another highlight of Raducanu's trip. Crieff also boasts luxury stays like the iconic Crieff Hydro, which has long welcomed famous guests, as well as attractions like the Caithness Glass Visitor Centre and The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret Distillery. With its storybook setting, rich history and star-studded events, it's little wonder Raducanu left Perthshire smitten. And as she returns to the court on Friday to face world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
