Northumbria healthcare staff vote to strike over backdated pay row
Dates for strike action are yet to be confirmed.Unison said the changes came after the trust recognised healthcare staff jobs had become "increasingly complex" over the years, yet they had been paid "the lowest hourly rate in the NHS".Clare Williams, Unison's northern regional secretary, said: "Most healthcare assistants have worked well above their hourly rate for a considerable time."These health staff say the imposed amount is not a good reflection of all the extra work they've done."This is the fourth trust in the North East to be in dispute with staff over wage banding, with workers in Teesside, South Tyneside and Sunderland negotiating a higher backpay deal.

However, the supporter, who was known to many as Uncle Dougie, was sadly rushed to a Danish hospital after taking ill during his trip. He is currently on a ventilator in the ICU and needs treatment. His son Ian shared the news in a message posted on Facebook through The Provincial Grand Lodge of Edinburgh. It said: "As you can imagine, it's come as a shock to us all, and with it happening away from home, that's just added to the complications and the stresses of the situation. "There's not too much information at the moment, but a brief summary of what has happened is that my Dad landed in Copenhagen on Tuesday evening and got on the train to travel to Henring for the match, but had to get off about an hour into the journey as he took really unwell. It's come as a shock to us all, and with it happening away from home, that's just added to the complications and stresses Ian "The good news is that there's been a slight improvement in him since he's been admitted, and he's responding well to dialysis and the antibiotics. "He is, however, still in intensive care and is still sedated and on a ventilator. "My mum and sister are staying at the hospital with him and are providing updates as and when they can, which I will share. "We're hoping that he continues to improve, but I think it's still going to be a long road of recovery ahead for him yet." The GoFundMe page explains that his loved ones are trying to navigate through the complicated insurance process. But they are urging people to help the family with Dougie's ongoing healthcare costs in the meantime. Organiser Peter Manson wrote on the page: "I am starting a fundraising to help cover the cost of medical care and accommodation for a well-known friend to many. "As some of you may know, Uncle Dougie (Dougie Sneddon) was over in Denmark to see his beloved team. "Dougie became seriously ill and is in a Danish Hospital and is in ICU, and on a ventilator. "So the family need our donations to cover the cost till they find out about insurance. We're hoping that he continues to improve, but I think it's still going to be a long road of recovery ahead for him yet Ian "Not like the UK, everything must be covered first. "Any funds I receive will be transferred to the family ASAP. "I will also take cash donations and keep a check of who donated it and mention them if they request it. Please share". Many have flocked to social media to wish Dougie well in hospital. One person said: "Get well soon Dougie. Sending love to you and your family at this difficult time Another added: "Keep fighting and get well soon Bud." Someone else wrote: "Get well soon from a Hearts fan". While a fourth commented: "My best wishes, praying for a speedy recovery and happy outcome". And a fifth posted: "Thinking of you Dougie, get well bro". I've tried all sorts to lose weight - but my latest attempt is my most extreme
Miah Carter was just 10 years old when she was put on a waiting list for gastric surgery. The schoolgirl had struggled with emotional eating and a hormone imbalance from an early age, both of which had left her clinically obese. 'I was one of the first ten-year-olds on the waitlist for gastric surgery for severe obesity,' the 22 year old content creator from Reading, Berkshire, tells Metro. ' I was referred to King's College Hospital in London and had regular appointments – however, in the end, my family and I decided not to push it due to the severity of the operation.' Miah's decade-long battle to be at peace with her body – which she says is due to health concerns rather than body image – has seen her explore a rollercoaster of weightloss methods, from fad diets to supplements, and even a spell using semaglutide injections, which left her feeling like she was having a heart attack. 'I tried every diet you can think of from Slim Fast to Weight Watchers. I've bought fat metabolisers and weightloss pills, and even saw private dieticians in London,' she explains. 'We went back and forth with different approaches, but nothing helped. Being autistic, I don't absorb information the same way as others, so found it really hard to retain what the dietitians were telling me. Sticking to routines is also tough for me – that's part of why it didn't work. 'I did a lot of emotional eating – food gave me comfort and made me happy,' Miah adds. 'Because of the size of my stomach, I could eat and eat. My hormones also played a big role. I'd eat until I was full – or even sick – and 10 minutes later, I'd feel empty again. I'd keep eating until it became physically painful.' By 16, Miah's weight was spiralling and she was desperate for a solution. 'I remember going into the chemist to buy weight-loss tablets – the kind advertised on TV. I can't recall the exact name, but they didn't do anything,' she says. As years went by, she went on to make a name for herself as a body positivity influencer, calling herself 'your self love big sister', with posts reminding her followers about the importance of self-acceptance, while also being honest about her own struggles with her weight and body image. As Miah continued to search for new ways to lose weight, she began to read about jabs, such as Mounjaro and Ozempic, that were originally created to treat diabetes. Scrolling through Facebook groups, looking at miraculous before and after images, she began to feel hopeful. 'I was heavily influenced by people online who were taking it and seeing results,' Miah remembers. 'I thought 'this is the solution – I'm finally going to lose weight and change my life'.' So she decided to try them. 24 hours after filling in an online form for the Saxenda injection, Miah went to a high street chemist to collect it. There, staff checked her eligibility and she was assessed by a doctor, then handed the drug, which she was told to inject daily and expect her appetite to reduce. 'I was quite gobsmacked at how simple it was,' she adds, pointing out that the chemist didn't offer any follow-up support. With high hopes, Miah started her injections, however, like many who take weight loss jabs, she began to suffer from side effects. 'I had really bad pain in my heart and started to feel sick, like something wasn't right in my body. I felt so run down and it was just horrible,' she remembers. Miah says that her heart would sometimes race so fast it felt like it was going to explode out of her chest. 'It would hit me out of nowhere, sometimes multiple times a day and each episode lasted minutes – but felt like hours. 'I'd be lying in bed or just standing in the kitchen and suddenly feel dizzy, short of breath, and completely overwhelmed. There were moments I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack. 'After a really severe episode, my first thought was, 'I bet it was the weight loss injections'. I had only been on them for a few weeks – less than a month -soI decided to stop. A few weeks after that, I was completely fine.' After coming off the jabs, Miah realised it was time once again to reassess her weight loss plan. This time, she finally made the bold decision to have gastric surgery last October – more than a decade after she had been put on the waiting list as a child. 'This was the biggest operation I've ever had – there is no going back,' she admits. 'You're essentially having part of your body removed and I now only have about 20% of my stomach left. It's a huge decision – but knowing what I know now, I should have done it earlier, as it's changed my life.' Miah has documented her weight loss journey to her to her 3 million followers, including the surgery – which has seen her lose 11stone since getting the gastric sleeve. However some people have hit back at her decision to get surgery, deeming it contradictory to body positivity. Miah disagrees: 'I did it for my health, not to change how I look. I was 32 stone and nearly on my deathbed at 20. My legs were hanging and I was struggling to walk. It was a massive decision, but one of the best I've made in my life. 'Every day, every hour, every minute I get hateful comments, but I don't care. I want people to see what I go through. Those sorts of comments used to hurt, but they don't touch me anymore. Now I just think – you're pushing up my views and paying my bills.' While the injections may have had an adverse effect on her health, Miah knows that they may work well for others. 'I'm not judging anyone or telling anyone not to take it—everyone's journey is different. If it works for you and improves your quality of life, I respect that.' More Trending 'But for me, it wasn't the right solution because when it comes to weight loss – there isn't one size fits all.' In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Binky says: "I actually put the gum thing online because I had no idea what it was and if it was common. "I was really worried about it and I actually only learnt through social media. By the way, hundreds of messages I got from other parents, other women, saying they've got the same. "I think the old wives tale is that you lose a tooth per child. I don't know, I'm freaking out, I'm going to have a tooth in ten years." Mum to daughter India, eight, from her past relationship with Josh 'JP' Patterson and sons Wolfie, three, and Wilder, one, with husband Max Darnton, Binky uses her platform to give an honest account of motherhood – warts and all. She continues: "Anyway, there's lots of not so glamorous things that happen after giving birth and having children. "I mean, I've started having to do my greys. I think it's all fun and games, and obviously the good outweighs the bad. "I think it's really important to talk about those things on social media. It calmed me down knowing how common this was and I've got some really great recommendations. "I'm hoping I can do the same with other people. Like my son's sesame allergy, helping to get these things desensitised and kind of being open and honest and talking about things like having cancerous cells, getting a smear test. "I'm using my platform for helping and educating in any small way I can." Made in Chelsea stars stage the Ultimate Reunion Binky feels her family is now complete, though admits she would like to add one more child to her brood. Eight years on from leaving Made In Chelsea, she says she finally feels like she has her "s**t together". "I feel like I've had child after child, and I've kind of been in the woods slightly, feeling a little bit kind of out of it," she admits. "And now I feel like I'm kind of getting my my Mojo back." Though as happy as she is, Binky isn't immune from the challenges that face mums and dads up and down the country. She's teamed up with Heinz to promote its new Mr. Men Little Miss pasta sauce in a bid to make mealtimes that little bit easier and tastier. The release of the smooth Bolognese sauce, which contains 100 percent natural ingredients and three vegetables, comes after new research found over a third of parents struggle getting their children to eat veg. Binky says: "I think all meal times are pretty stressful, and I've gone down the route of kind of creating beautiful masterpieces that have taken me hours to make, and I put them in front of my children, and there's vegetables in there. There's everything you could think of that's like going to shove goodness in them, and of course they roll their eyes, push their plate away, and they can go completely silent on me. "So I have to take myself off into a different room, just to kind of calm down and just kind of breathe after being completely shot down by my children. "I've just realised that if there's any easy, nutritious, yummy thing out there like this amazing sauce Bolognese sauce. It's a bit of a no brainer, really." Adding to the fun for kids is the inclusion of new character Mr. Ridiculously Good on the label. Away from family life, Binky has been filming the second run of Beyond Chelsea, the Made In Chelsea spin-off following the lives of original stars Binky, Lucy Watson and Rosie Fortescue. Binky pitched the idea to telly bosses last year after being constantly asked what the cast members were up to now and is delighted with how it's been received. And she's also launching her first kidswear range with Marks & Spencer which she calls a "pinch me" moment. She says: "I mean, I've had my first bra fitted at Marks and Spencers. I've grown up with Marks and Spencers. So that was a really cool career highlight."
