‘India Doesn't See Africa As Just A Source Of Raw Materials': PM Modi In Namibian Parliament
Modi says India supported SWAPO even before independence and hosted its first foreign office in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the Namibian Parliament in Windhoek, invoking India's long-standing support for Namibia's freedom struggle and expressing New Delhi's commitment to work alongside the southern African nation as it moves toward its developmental goals under Vision 2030.
Speaking before Namibian lawmakers, Modi said India had supported Namibia's independence movement even before gaining its own freedom, raising the issue of South West Africa at the United Nations and backing the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO). 'The people of India stood proudly with Namibia during your freedom struggle," he said, adding that New Delhi hosted SWAPO's first ever diplomatic office abroad.
Modi paid tribute to founding president Sam Nujoma and freedom fighters, calling their contributions an inspiration. 'We honour the memory of the fighters of your freedom struggle," he said.
'It was an Indian Lieutenant General, Dewan Prem Chand, who led the UN peacekeeping force in Namibia. India is proud to have stood with you, not just in words but in action," he further added.

The Indian government has emphasized its commitment to securing the safe return of Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse facing capital punishment in Yemen, while cautioning against unauthorized interventions that could potentially undermine ongoing diplomatic negotiations. Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the Supreme Court on Friday that the government prioritizes bringing Priya back safely and warned that parallel efforts by private organizations or individuals attempting to negotiate directly with the victim's family could prove counterproductive. The court was hearing a petition from the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, which sought permission to travel to Yemen to continue engagement with the deceased's relatives. The Supreme Court declined to grant travel permission to the organization and instead directed them to approach the government directly with their proposal. The bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, allowed the organization to submit a formal representation to the government, which will be evaluated on its merits. The case is scheduled for further hearing on August 14. Recent developments brought hope when Yemeni authorities postponed Priya's execution, originally scheduled for July 16, following intervention by respected Islamic clerics. However, the victim's family has remained steadfast in their demand for capital punishment, with the brother of the murdered man declaring their unwillingness to consider alternative arrangements. Under Yemen's implementation of Sharia law, death row convicts can avoid execution if the victim's family accepts diyat, a form of compensation payment, and waives their right to retributive justice. Priya's supporters had hoped to negotiate such an arrangement, but the victim's family has consistently rejected all overtures, viewing the matter as a question of honor. The 38-year-old nurse from Kerala's Palakkad district was convicted for the 2017 murder of her former business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi. According to the prosecution, Priya had partnered with Mahdi to establish a medical clinic in Yemen in 2015, but escalating personal and financial disputes led to fatal consequences. The prosecution alleged that Priya administered sedatives to Mahdi in an attempt to retrieve her confiscated passport, resulting in a fatal overdose. A trial court in Sanaa convicted Priya in 2020, and Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council upheld the death sentence in November 2023. President Rashad al-Alimi subsequently approved the execution order in 2024. Throughout the legal proceedings, Priya's family has maintained that she suffered physical, financial, and emotional abuse at Mahdi's hands, arguing that the death was not premeditated but resulted from desperation and entrapment. The case has presented unique diplomatic challenges for India, as the country does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Yemen, where significant portions of the territory, including the capital Sanaa, remain under Houthi rebel control. Despite these obstacles, Indian officials have pursued multiple diplomatic channels and enlisted the assistance of influential Islamic clerics to advocate for clemency. Attorney General Venkataramani previously informed the court that India had exhausted all available formal and informal diplomatic avenues in the case. The government's efforts have included engaging respected religious leaders to intercede with Yemeni authorities, demonstrating the extent of India's commitment to securing Priya's release. Priya's mother, Prema Kumari, a domestic worker from Kochi, has been residing in Sanaa for over a year, making persistent efforts to reach the victim's family and appeal for mercy. The Delhi High Court granted her permission to travel to the conflict-affected region in December 2023, highlighting the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the case. The ongoing diplomatic efforts reflect the complex intersection of legal, cultural, and religious considerations in international criminal cases, particularly in regions affected by armed conflict and political instability.

The US Department of State on Friday (July 18) added The Resistance Front as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) declared the TRF a 'terrorist organisation' under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in January 2023. The government said it was engaged in propaganda on terror activities, recruitment of terrorists, infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of weapons and narcotics from Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir. But the TRF first started making headlines in 2020. In May of that year, five Army commandos were killed in a gunbattle in Keran, in which five TRF militants were also killed. Similar clashes occurred around that time in Handwara and Sopore, killing security personnel. Two key events had taken place before this. The first was the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 in August 2019. The second was the decapitation of the LeT in Kashmir in 2018. The US State Department recognises foreign organisations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). This allows the US to take punitive actions against these groups, such as restricting their ability to operate in the US and denying them access to resources. Quite simply, the designation seeks to cripple the organisation. It is not only unlawful for a US-based person to provide 'material support or resources' to a designated FTO, but American financial institutions may also be required to block all transactions involving assets held or controlled by an FTO. Around 79 organisations have currently been designated as FTOs by the US, including TRF. The US Office of Foreign Assets (OFAC) may also designate such terror organisations as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs), and thus the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list to block their assets. Such designations may also trigger secondary sanctions to target individuals in business with the designated SDGT. How did The Resistance Front grow? The Lashkar-e-Taiba was founded around 1985, and one of its main goals was merging the whole of Kashmir with Pakistan. However, by the end of 2018, it had suffered significant reverses at the hands of Indian security forces. In November 2018, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hanzulla was killed in a gunfight on the outskirts of Srinagar. Jatt was the fifth top Lashkar commander to have been killed in a period of 45 days. Before Jatt, Lashkar's Srinagar chief Mehraj-ud-din Bangroo, its top commander in North Kashmir, Abu Muaz, and its top South Kashmir commanders Azad Ahmad Malik and Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, had been killed. The wiping off of the top leadership drastically reduced LeT's strike capability in the Valley. Then came the revocation of Article 370. According to sources in the security forces, Pakistan wanted to retaliate against this, but was mindful of its greylisting by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The FATF is an inter-governmental body which tracks terrorism financing. If it believes that a country is not doing enough to prevent international money laundering and terrorist financing, it puts the country on the grey list. This impacts the country's ability to attract international investment and engage with banks and other international financial institutions. Thus, it wanted a militant outfit in Kashmir that sounded more 'secular and indigenous'. A police officer had told The Indian Express in 2020, 'Lashkar and Jaish-e-Mohammad had religious connotations and Pakistan didn't want that. They wanted to secularise the Kashmir militancy and make it appear indigenous. Hence they opted for 'Resistance' — that has some currency in global politics — in its name.' Another officer had said, 'Unlike local militants, who have no training, these new militants seem to have trained hard. As far as we know, they are trained for at least six months before being inducted. The outfit has a mix of both local and foreign militants so that it looks indigenous. The surprising part is that the local militants are also very well trained in Pakistan.' The TRF is active on social media channels, such as Facebook, Telegram, and WhatsApp, where it posts propaganda videos and claims responsibility for various attacks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (July 18, 2025) launched development projects worth more than ₹7,200 crore in Bihar's East Champaran district. While addressing the rally, Mr. Modi said, 'The land of Champaran has given a new direction to Mahatma Gandhi and will also give a direction for Bihar's development,'. In line with his vision of a future-ready railway network, Mr. Modi flagged off four new Amrit Bharat trains between Rajendra Nagar (Patna) and New Delhi, Bapudham Motihari and Delhi (Anand Vihar terminal), Darbhanga and Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) and Malda Town and Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) via Bhagalpur. The PM also dedicated to the nation multiple rail projects. These included automatic signalling in the Samastipur-Bachhwara stretch that would enable efficient train services, doubling of Darbhanga-Thalwara and Samastipur-Rambhadrapur rail lines, part of a project worth over ₹580 crore. PM Modi also laid the foundation stones for multiple rail projects, including the development of infrastructure for maintenance of Vande Bharat trains at Patliputra, and automatic signalling on the Bhatni-Chhapra Gramin route (114 km) to enable streamlined train services. Upgradation of the traction system in the Bhatni-Chhapra Gramin section to enable higher train speeds was part of such projects. Besides, the doubling of the Darbhanga-Narkatiaganj rail line project, worth around ₹4,080 crore, was also launched to increase sectional capacity, enable operation of more passenger and freight trains, and strengthen connectivity between north Bihar and the rest of the country. In a major boost to road infrastructure in the region, the PM laid the foundation stone for the 4-laning of the Ara bypass of NH-319 that connects Ara-Mohania NH-319 and Patna-Buxar NH-922, providing seamless connectivity and reducing travel time. PM Modi also inaugurated the 4-lane Parariya to Mohania section of NH-319, worth over ₹820 crore, part of NH-319, which connects Ara Town to NH-2 (Golden Quadrilateral) that would improve freight and passenger movement. Among others, a 2-lane with paved shoulders from Sarwan to Chakai of NH-333C was also launched to facilitate the movement of goods and people and act as a key link between Bihar and Jharkhand. He also inaugurated a new Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility at Darbhanga and an incubation centre of STPI at Patna for promoting information technology (IT) and ITes, and startups.
