
Samudrayaan: NIOT to conduct controlled water trials, crew sphere getting ready
The Matsya-6000 submersible, centerpiece of the Samudrayaan mission, is designed to carry a three-member crew to depths of up to 5,000 meters for deep ocean exploration. Earlier this year, the NIOT successfully completed the maiden harbour wet test at Kattupalli Port near Chennai, which included both manned and unmanned dives to assess the submersible's power, control, flotation, stability, and life support systems.These initial trials validated the core design, but also highlighted areas for improvement, particularly as the mission moves toward deeper and more demanding underwater environments.The upcoming second wet test will focus on the integration and performance of the new titanium exoskeleton, which is expected to enhance the submersible's structural integrity and resilience under extreme pressure.The titanium personnel sphere, being developed in collaboration with Isro, is undergoing advanced welding processes at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, a technological feat given the sphere's 80 mm thickness and the need to withstand pressures found 6,000 meters below sea level.

10 Isro technologies transferred to 6 private firms
PTI file photo BENGALURU: India's space regulator-cum-promoter Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre ( IN-SPACe ) Thursday said it has facilitated the transfer of ten state-of-the-art technologies developed by Isro to six Indian industries across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments. In the upstream segment, two advanced inertial sensors — the Laser Gyroscope and Ceramic Servo Accelerometer — developed by Isro's Inertial Systems Unit have been transferred to Zetatek Technologies. For the midstream segment, three technologies related to ground station operations were transferred. 'These include: the S/X/Ka tri-band dual circular polarised monopulse feed, a tri-axis antenna control servo system, and the Ku/C/L and S Band Cassegrain feed. All developed by Isro, these were transferred to Avantel and Jisnu Communications, both Hyderabad-based firms specialising in communications solutions for space and defence,' IN-SPACe said. These models will support agricultural decision-making and crop protection. 'A compact, multi-parameter portable bathymetry system developed by Isro's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) was transferred to Jalkruti Water Solutions, Ahmedabad, for UAV-based water resource monitoring. Additionally, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre's ceramic-based flame-proof coating, originally developed for launch vehicles, was acquired by Ramdev Chemicals, also in Ahmedabad, for broader industrial use. All transfers were formalised through tripartite Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) signed between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the respective recipient firms, and IN-SPACe. IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka said the move was a significant step in enabling private sector growth . The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has said that the Axiom-4 (Ax-04) mission which Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is part of will provide valuable inputs for India's upcoming Gaganyaan mission. 'The Ax-04 mission will provide valuable inputs for ISRO's upcoming Gaganyaan mission. It offers hands-on experience in the nuances of international crew integration, medical and psychological preparation, real-time health telemetry, experiment execution, and crew–ground coordination,' ISRO said. It added that these insights will directly influence mission planning, safety validation, and astronaut readiness for India's first indigenous human spaceflight mission. 'This is one small step in orbit, but a giant leap in India's pursuit of human spaceflight and scientific discovery,' it added. ISRO said that preparations are also in progress for abort missions of the Gaganyaan mission and the first uncrewed test flight is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2025. It added that the first crewed flight of the Gaganyaan mission is expected by the first quarter of 2027. The space agency also said that as a tribute to India's rich cultural heritage, Group Captain Shukla is carrying a selection of the finest of Indian handicrafts to the International Space Station (ISS). 'These symbolic items, designed by students of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, reflect the diversity, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty of India's traditional art forms, carefully curated to represent different regions and materials. These pieces serve as cultural ambassadors in space. Their journey aboard the ISS not only celebrates India's artistic legacy but also honours the generations of artisans who continue to keep these traditions alive,' the space agency said.
