RJD mocks formation of new commissions by govt in election year

Time of India01-06-2025
Patna: A day after the NDA govt reconstituted the Mahadalit Commission and the Fishermen Commission (Machuara Ayog), the
RJD
on Sunday described the move as a political gimmick ahead of the upcoming
Bihar assembly elections
.
In a social media post, the RJD referred to the reconstituted panels as a "Jhunjhuna Commission", formed merely to create an impression before the polls. The party said, "LJP, HAM, JD(U) and BJP together formed Jija-Sala, Sasur-Damaad, Beta-Bhatija Commission!"
The Nitish Kumar-led govt has, in recent days, announced several commissions targeting different caste groups, including those for upper castes, Mahadalits, scheduled castes and the fishermen community.
In the reconstituted Scheduled Caste Commission, Dhananjay Kumar alias Mrinal Paswan has been appointed chairman and Devendra Manjhi as vice-chairman. Mrinal is related to LJP (RV) president Chirag Paswan while Manjhi is connected to HAM (S) patron and Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Manoj Kumar from Katihar has been named chairman of the Mahadalit Commission. Lalan Kumar of East Champaran has been appointed chairman of the Fishermen Commission and Ajit Chaudhary of Buxar as vice-chairman.
Other members of the Fishermen Commission include Vidyasagar Singh Nishad of Samastipur, Rajkumar of Patna and Renu Singh of Bhagalpur.
VIP chief Mukesh Sahani also criticised the announcement, calling it mere tokenism just months ahead of the polls. "Nitish has been in power for so long, but why did he not remember to form this commission till now?" said Sahani, who is also popularly known as the 'Son of Mallah'.
The fishermen community, comprising various sub-castes, makes up approximately 8% of Bihar's population.
The BJP plans to hold fishermen conferences across the state in June and July, including in Muzaffarpur (June 10), Katihar (June 14), Darbhanga (June 18), Motihari (June 22), Samastipur (June 26), Khagaria (June 30) and Patna (July 10).
Sanjay Kumar of Biharsharif, Rubel Ravidas of Patna and Lalan Ram of Aurangabad have been appointed as members of the SC Commission. Ramnaresh Kumar of Vaishali, Ram Ishwar Rajak of Bhojpur and Ajit Kumar Chaudhary of Patna will serve as members of the Mahadalit Commission.

Edappadi flays DMK government over LED screen contract

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday said the people wish to see a change of guard in the state after the 2026 election and urged the party cadre to tell people about the good work done by the past AIADMK regimes. Writing his second letter to the AIADMK cadre ahead of launching his statewide tour on July 7, Palaniswami exhorted the party cadre to attend it. In another statement, Palaniswami criticised the state for directing 385 panchayat union offices and 12,620 village panchayats to disseminate publicity content through LED screens. He said the rural development department has been instructed to float tenders naming three companies, and among them, a particular company based in Madurai is to be awarded the contract to install LED screens. Each of the 385 offices has been instructed to purchase one LED screen at an inflated cost of Rs 7.5 lakh. Also, each of the 12,620 village panchayats has been told to buy a smaller version of these screens for approximately Rs 10,000. Terming this a wasteful expenditure, Palaniswami urged the government to give up this scheme.

Fare hike report: Tejasvi moves Karnataka High Court against BMRCL

BENGALURU: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has moved the Karnataka High Court against the state government and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), accusing them of 'suppressing' the Metro Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report that recommended a significant fare increase. Surya stated on Sunday that his writ petition is scheduled for hearing on Monday. Calling the government's actions 'arbitrary and opaque', Surya questioned the decision to keep the FFC report confidential. He criticised the committee for making broad recommendations and going on international study tours funded by taxpayers, while failing to ensure transparency. 'Every other Metro system in the country, including Delhi, has made its FFC reports public. Why is Bengaluru the exception? What is the government trying to hide?' he asked. He also noted that the fare hike has led to a significant drop in ridership, pushing Namma Metro into the ranks of the most expensive public transport systems in India. 'This fare structure is unaffordable for many middle-class commuters,' Surya stated. Taking a direct swipe at the Congress-led state government, the BJP MP demanded to know why Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is withholding the report despite no legal or security-related reasons for doing so. 'Public transport must be affordable, reliable, and above all accountable to the public, who fund and use it,' Surya said. He described his legal move as a battle for transparency and fairness in governance. 'I will not rest until Namma Bengaluru becomes a model in public transport for all of India,' he concluded. Even during the protest on Saturday against the delay in operataionalising the Yellow Line, Surya had demanded BMRCL to immediately release the FFC report as the public has the right to transparency and to know the rationale behind the fare hike.

Uttar Pradesh no longer

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 7 (ANI): BJP MP Dinesh Sharma has praised the 'transformation' of Uttar Pradesh under the BJP-led government, claiming that the state has shed its image of lawlessness and has now become the 'best state'. 'Everyone knows what kind of rule is prevailing in Uttar Pradesh. The era of lawlessness has ended, and now the rule of the people is in place... It took a considerable amount of time to transform Uttar Pradesh. Today, after 8 years, Uttar Pradesh has become not just excellent but the best state...' Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state currently has 10 per cent forest cover and the goal is to raise it to 16 per cent. 'The campaign 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' that we started in alignment with the Prime Minister's vision on World Environment Day - June 5, 2025, is achieving new heights of success. On June 29, this campaign moved ahead, and on July 9, it will achieve a new height when 37 crore saplings will be planted across Uttar Pradesh... I am happy that the 210 crore tree plantation programs were successfully completed in 8 years. We now have 10 per cent forest cover. We should aim for 16% of forest cover in Uttar Pradesh, which will equal the country's 16% population living in the state,' CM Yogi Adityanath said. In 2025, we have 52 crore saplings - and are not of Eucalyptus or Popular but neem, mango, peepal,' he said.
