Ludhiana: PSPCL employees warn of mass leave protest
The protest is being jointly led by several associations including the PSEB Employees Joint Forum, Bijli Mulazam Ekta Manch Punjab, Association of Junior Engineers, Grid Sub Station Employees Union, Powercom and Transco Pensioners Union (AITUC Punjab), and the Pensioner Welfare Federation.
Employees said their frustration stems from a meeting chaired by power minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on June 2 at the PSPCL guest house in Mohali, during which several demands were agreed upon. However, nearly two months later, they allege that the power management has deliberately delayed issuing the necessary notification and beginning the implementation process.
The unions have flagged several key issues, including the non-payment of the pending 13% dearness allowance, non-restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, unresolved salary and pension anomalies, unpaid arrears, and what they term as the 'stealth' privatisation of the power sector. Protesters also criticised the delay in compensating families of workers who died during last year's paddy season, the lack of a cashless treatment facility for injured employees, and the imposition of Central Pay Scales in place of the power corporation's agreed scales.
Further grievances include a rise in workplace fatalities, politically motivated transfers, denial of promotion-linked benefits, and the continued exploitation of in-house contract workers due to non-regularisation. Pensioners are particularly upset over a monthly deduction of ₹200 under the development tax, calling it arbitrary and unjustified.
Union leaders have stated that if the government fails to respond promptly, the responsibility for any disruption in electricity services during the mass leave protest period will lie entirely with the state government and the power corporation's management.

Environmentalist Gagnish Khurana, addressing the media, said, 'Ludhiana, especially areas like old Kidwai Nagar, has very limited green cover. Park areas form less than 1% of the land, whereas even affordable housing projects require at least 8% green space. These trees are vital for maintaining urban balance.' Khurana also criticised the authorities for not following proper procedures. 'As per high court guidelines, it is mandatory to inform local residents through public notices before selecting any park for such construction. No such information was shared with us,' he added. Vinod Kapoor, a local resident, stressed the need for transparency and suggested public consultation before finalising such major projects. 'Development is important, but it should be sustainable. Residents must be taken into confidence,' he said. Kapil Arora, president of the local association, clarified that the residents are not opposing the construction of the water tank itself. 'We welcome the project but request that it be built at the site of the old, unused water tank. This way, we can avoid unnecessary damage to greenery. The Supreme Court has equated the cutting of trees to murder, yet our authorities seem to be ignoring the long-term consequences,' he said. The ₹1,660-crore surface water supply project, supported under a World Bank scheme, aims to reduce dependency on groundwater. However, residents insist that infrastructure development must not come at the cost of Ludhiana's already limited green lungs.

On the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from August 13 to 15, CM Yogi asserted that the campaign and the mantra of 'Swadeshi Products in Every Hand' are crucial steps towards realising the vision of a self-reliant India. He called upon the workers to join the campaign by hoisting the Triranga at their homes, taking selfies, engaging people and promoting local crafts by adopting swadeshi products like ODOP. This, he said, is the most powerful way to economically strengthen India and give a strong response to those who try to blackmail the nation. The CM was referring to the trade tariff sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump on India. BJP state chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has become a powerful expression of national patriotism. 'This campaign aims to awaken every citizen's sense of pride, faith, and responsibility towards the nation,' he said. Chaudhary criticised the opposition for spreading lies and negativity while the BJP government worked tirelessly for public welfare. He urged BJP workers to engage wholeheartedly in the voter revision campaign, keeping in mind the upcoming elections. Also speaking on the occasion, deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya described the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign as a national revolution of patriotism.
