Former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks has died after a battle with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer.
Jenks was 44 years old.
The two-time All-Star and 2005 World Series champion revealed his condition during a February 2025 interview with MLB.com from a hospital bed in Portugal, where he moved to be closer to his wife's family.
Jenks spent six of his seven MLB seasons with the White Sox. He posted back-to-back 40-save seasons in 2006 and 2007 and compiled 86 saves over his final three seasons in Chicago. During the 2007 season, he retired 47 consecutive batters. He spent the 2011 season, his last in MLB, with the Boston Red Sox.

In May 2021, Jenks began working as the pitching coach for the minor-league Grand Junction Rockies. The next season, he was promoted to manager and won the league's Manager of the Year award after helping the team win a championship.
Jenks spent the 2023 season as the Princeton WhistlePigs' pitching coach before he returned to managing with the Windy City ThunderBolts later that year.
A father of six, Jenks and his wife, Eleni, moved to Portugal in October 2024. Not long after they relocated, he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and later dealt with multiple blood clots in his lungs. Early in 2025, he noticed that his energy level was decreasing, and after testing at a local hospital, it was discovered that a tumor had formed in his chest.

Jenks told MLB.com that the tumor spread into his stomach lining, his bones, his lower back and his hips.
As Jenks was dealing with his health battle, his family was affected by the Palisades fire, which caused them to lose their home and personal belongings, except for his 2005 World Series ring.
'I've got one suitcase left to my name,' Jenks said. 'It's all gone. Everything else I've ever done. I have everything, first to first. All those things are irreplaceable.'

Clayton Kershaw grateful for 'weird but cool' All-Star selection as 'Legend Pick'

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is 4-0 with a 3.43 ERA this season and became the 20th pitcher to reach 3,000 career strikeouts last week. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) Clayton Kershaw has been an All-Star 10 times before. But no selection surprised him quite like this year's. Included on the National League All-Star team as a 'Legend Pick' by Commissioner Rob Manfred in recognition of his career accomplishments, Kershaw did not get any advance warning from Manfred or anyone in the league office that he would be in the "Midsummer Classic." Advertisement When manager Dave Roberts gathered his Dodgers team to announce the club's All-Star selections on Sunday, Kershaw forgot that the 'Legend Pick' — which has been used in the past for players such as Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera — was even a thing. Read more: 'Really impressed.' Shohei Ohtani's return to two-way role going (mostly) well a month in Thus, when Roberts announced Kershaw's name, the 37-year-old was caught more than a little off-guard — having made just nine starts this season since returning from offseason toe and knee surgeries. 'Obviously, I don't deserve to get to go this season, haven't pitched very much,' he deadpanned. 'I don't know if Doc was going for the surprise factor or not. But I had no idea until he said it.' Advertisement But by Monday, the meaningfulness of what he described as a 'tremendous honor' had also set in, with Kershaw expressing gratitude for what will be his 11th career selection, tied for the most among active players with Mike Trout. 'You never take for granted getting to go to an All-Star Game, regardless of the circumstances,' Kershaw said. 'At the end of the day, it's weird but cool, so I'm just going to enjoy it.' While Kershaw's limited workload would normally not warrant an All-Star selection, his stats haven't been too far off that pace this year: A 4-0 record, 3.43 ERA and 1.254 WHIP in what is the 18th season of his future Hall of Fame career. 'I think there's some good and some bad,' Kershaw said of his season so far. 'I wouldn't say happy, but I wouldn't say disappointed either. I would say kind of right in the middle.' Advertisement The highlight of the campaign, of course, came in Kershaw's last start, when he became the 20th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts. But at this stage of his career, Kershaw's real satisfaction has been with his health — finally past the various back, elbow, shoulder, knee and toe injuries that had plagued him over the last several seasons. 'I think the biggest thing is just the mental toll [that takes on you],' Kershaw said. 'Anyone that has been dealing with stuff, I think it's always in the back of your head. You wake up and you test it and you move around and you test it to see if it hurts, see how bad it hurts. [Now], instead of wondering if you can pitch, it's just a matter of how you're going to pitch. I don't think I took into appreciation the mental toll that takes over time. So to just worry about pitching is nice, for sure.' It has also allowed Kershaw 'to get the reps and go back out and be able to feel OK in between starts to work on some stuff,' he said. 'Figure out some different things mechanically and pitch-wise and stuff.' Advertisement Long-term, Kershaw still hasn't decided if this will be his final season. 'I don't know what is going to happen in the future,' he said. 'I really have no idea when it comes to the years beyond this one. So I'm just trying to enjoy it, be part of a really good team this year.' When it comes to next week's All-Star Game, he isn't even sure if he'll pitch in the showcase exhibition, which will be held at Truist Park in Atlanta. Read more: Shaikin: LAX won't say who designed its iconic murals, but the Dodgers will. Why? 'I'd love to pitch but I don't want to take an inning away from somebody who's never done it before or this is their first year or whatever,' he said. 'I'll enjoy just to hang or pitch or whatever.' Advertisement On Monday, Kershaw's focus was instead on his final start of the first half: A scheduled Tuesday outing against the Milwaukee Brewers and their 23-year-old rookie starlet, Jacob Misiorowski. Kershaw, 14 years Misiorowski's senior, laughed when asked what it's like to be the elder statesman in such high-profile matchups now. 'I saw a couple highlights [of him], know he throws hard,' Kershaw said. 'But so does everybody. Except me.' Sign up for more Dodgers news with Dodgers Dugout. Delivered at the start of each series. Jamal Musiala Injury Update- When Will Bayern Munich Star Return? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Bayern Munich fans are already worried ahead of next season as one of their most important players, Jamal Musiala, suffered an ankle injury in the FIFA Club World Cup. After being brought down by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG vs Bayern match, many wondered if the injury was severe. Advertisement By the looks of both PSG and Bayern players around Musiala, many believed the player would be missing the entirety of next season. Bayern Munich confirmed that Musiala suffered a fractured fibula as a result of an ankle dislocation. BILD reported that the injury could leave him out for around four to five months, which is less than what many fans expected. The German club has announced an update on the German star who is set to start his recovery. Bayern Munich on Jamal Musiala's injury Bayern Munich published a brief statement in regards to Jamal Musiala's injury. After announcing that the player suffered a fractured fibula, the club also informed that the player would require surgery. The club announced that Musiala has undergone a successful surgery. Bayern Munich: "Jamal Musiala has undergone successful surgery after returning from the Club World Cup in the USA. In the quarter-final between FC Bayern and Paris St. Germain, the 22-year-old attacking player suffered a fractured fibula as a result of a broken and dislocated ankle and was substituted at half-time. He will begin his first rehabilitation sessions tomorrow, Tuesday, and will be unavailable to the German record champions for the next few months." Advertisement BILD reported that Musiala flew back to Munich separately from the rest of the team. Bayern reportedly ordered a private air ambulance for a quick return. Musiala is expected to return fully fit around December or January 2026. Donnarumma faced backlash over Musiala's injury After the PSG vs Bayern game this past weekend, many criticized Donnarumma for his challenge on Musiala, which caused the injury. Manuel Neuer revealed his frustration with the Italian goalkeeper and explained what he said to him after the game. Manuel Neuer: "It was a situation where you don't have to go in like that. That's risk-taking. He [Donnarumma] was prepared to accept the risk of injuring his opponent. I went to him and said, 'Don't you want to go and see our player?' It's a matter of respect, of going there and wishing the guy all the best. He then did it. Fairplay is always a part of it. I would have reacted differently." Former Bayern Munich player Rafinha revealed on Sport TV the reactions of most Bayern Munich players towards Donnarumma for injuring Musiala. The Brazilian explained how Bayern players demanded an apology from Donnarumma. Rafinha: "They were angry because they wanted Donnarumma to at least apologize, since they saw that the injury was serious. After the game, there were heated conversations in the dressing room. The players went to him [Donnarumma] in the PSG dressing room to ask him to apologize; they exchanged some strong words. They demanded that, like a 'code of ethics', at least to apologize, even though he didn't do it on purpose." 3 Detroit Tigers Mentioned as Possible All-Star Game Replacements by MLB Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. July 15's MLB All-Star Game is rapidly approaching as the dust settles on Sunday's roster announcements. Advertisement The Detroit Tigers landed three starters on the team including Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres and Javy Baez along with Tarik Skubal on the team's pitching staff, the most Detroit has recorded since 2015. On Monday, Will Leitch revealed his latest MLB power rankings, placing AJ Hinch's league-leading Tigers at the top of the league while also shining a spotlight on three players who could find themselves as ASG replacements by the time the American and National Leagues are ready to take the field at Truist Park in Atlanta. Advertisement "The Tigers ended up with four All-Stars, including their three starters -- Riley Greene, Javier Baez, and Gleyber Torres, plus Tarik Skubal -- the most since 2015, when Miguel Cabrera, Jose Iglesias (his one ASG appearance) J.D. Martinez and David Price all made the team. "If there are any replacements, you wonder if there's potentially space for Zach McKinstry, Spencer Torkleson or Casey Mize, all of whom are clearly deserving," Leitch added on McKinstry is hitting .285 with six home runs and 26 RBI for the Tigers and 77 hits while Mize is 9-2 with a sub-3.00 ERA (2.63). Torkelson is hitting .235 with 20 home runs, supplying power in the middle of Detroit's batting order this season.
