Bobby Jenks, former White Sox closer and World Series champion, dies at 44
Former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks has died after a battle with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer.
Jenks was 44 years old.
The two-time All-Star and 2005 World Series champion revealed his condition during a February 2025 interview with MLB.com from a hospital bed in Portugal, where he moved to be closer to his wife's family.
Jenks spent six of his seven MLB seasons with the White Sox. He posted back-to-back 40-save seasons in 2006 and 2007 and compiled 86 saves over his final three seasons in Chicago. During the 2007 season, he retired 47 consecutive batters. He spent the 2011 season, his last in MLB, with the Boston Red Sox.

In May 2021, Jenks began working as the pitching coach for the minor-league Grand Junction Rockies. The next season, he was promoted to manager and won the league's Manager of the Year award after helping the team win a championship.
Jenks spent the 2023 season as the Princeton WhistlePigs' pitching coach before he returned to managing with the Windy City ThunderBolts later that year.
A father of six, Jenks and his wife, Eleni, moved to Portugal in October 2024. Not long after they relocated, he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and later dealt with multiple blood clots in his lungs. Early in 2025, he noticed that his energy level was decreasing, and after testing at a local hospital, it was discovered that a tumor had formed in his chest.

Jenks told MLB.com that the tumor spread into his stomach lining, his bones, his lower back and his hips.
As Jenks was dealing with his health battle, his family was affected by the Palisades fire, which caused them to lose their home and personal belongings, except for his 2005 World Series ring.
'I've got one suitcase left to my name,' Jenks said. 'It's all gone. Everything else I've ever done. I have everything, first to first. All those things are irreplaceable.'

'Obviously, I don't deserve to get to go this season, haven't pitched very much,' he deadpanned. 'I don't know if Doc was going for the surprise factor or not. But I had no idea until he said it.' Advertisement But by Monday, the meaningfulness of what he described as a 'tremendous honor' had also set in, with Kershaw expressing gratitude for what will be his 11th career selection, tied for the most among active players with Mike Trout. 'You never take for granted getting to go to an All-Star Game, regardless of the circumstances,' Kershaw said. 'At the end of the day, it's weird but cool, so I'm just going to enjoy it.' While Kershaw's limited workload would normally not warrant an All-Star selection, his stats haven't been too far off that pace this year: A 4-0 record, 3.43 ERA and 1.254 WHIP in what is the 18th season of his future Hall of Fame career. 'I think there's some good and some bad,' Kershaw said of his season so far. 'I wouldn't say happy, but I wouldn't say disappointed either. I would say kind of right in the middle.' Advertisement The highlight of the campaign, of course, came in Kershaw's last start, when he became the 20th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts. But at this stage of his career, Kershaw's real satisfaction has been with his health — finally past the various back, elbow, shoulder, knee and toe injuries that had plagued him over the last several seasons. 'I think the biggest thing is just the mental toll [that takes on you],' Kershaw said. 'Anyone that has been dealing with stuff, I think it's always in the back of your head. You wake up and you test it and you move around and you test it to see if it hurts, see how bad it hurts. [Now], instead of wondering if you can pitch, it's just a matter of how you're going to pitch. I don't think I took into appreciation the mental toll that takes over time. So to just worry about pitching is nice, for sure.' It has also allowed Kershaw 'to get the reps and go back out and be able to feel OK in between starts to work on some stuff,' he said. 'Figure out some different things mechanically and pitch-wise and stuff.' Advertisement Long-term, Kershaw still hasn't decided if this will be his final season. 'I don't know what is going to happen in the future,' he said. 'I really have no idea when it comes to the years beyond this one. So I'm just trying to enjoy it, be part of a really good team this year.' When it comes to next week's All-Star Game, he isn't even sure if he'll pitch in the showcase exhibition, which will be held at Truist Park in Atlanta. After announcing that the player suffered a fractured fibula, the club also informed that the player would require surgery. The club announced that Musiala has undergone a successful surgery. In the quarter-final between FC Bayern and Paris St. Germain, the 22-year-old attacking player suffered a fractured fibula as a result of a broken and dislocated ankle and was substituted at half-time. He will begin his first rehabilitation sessions tomorrow, Tuesday, and will be unavailable to the German record champions for the next few months." Advertisement BILD reported that Musiala flew back to Munich separately from the rest of the team. Bayern reportedly ordered a private air ambulance for a quick return. Musiala is expected to return fully fit around December or January 2026. Donnarumma faced backlash over Musiala's injury After the PSG vs Bayern game this past weekend, many criticized Donnarumma for his challenge on Musiala, which caused the injury. Manuel Neuer revealed his frustration with the Italian goalkeeper and explained what he said to him after the game. Manuel Neuer: "It was a situation where you don't have to go in like that. That's risk-taking. He [Donnarumma] was prepared to accept the risk of injuring his opponent. I went to him and said, 'Don't you want to go and see our player?' It's a matter of respect, of going there and wishing the guy all the best. He then did it. Fairplay is always a part of it. I would have reacted differently." Former Bayern Munich player Rafinha revealed on Sport TV the reactions of most Bayern Munich players towards Donnarumma for injuring Musiala. The Brazilian explained how Bayern players demanded an apology from Donnarumma. Rafinha: "They were angry because they wanted Donnarumma to at least apologize, since they saw that the injury was serious. After the game, there were heated conversations in the dressing room. The players went to him [Donnarumma] in the PSG dressing room to ask him to apologize; they exchanged some strong words. They demanded that, like a 'code of ethics', at least to apologize, even though he didn't do it on purpose."
