Chelsea star admitted devastation at best friend leaving - 'Doesn't sit right'

Chelsea, who face Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday, have been viewed largely as a team of individuals in recent times. However, after securing fourth place on Sunday and a spot in next season's Champions League, it's clear there are relationships within this squad worth keeping together.
That sentiment echoes how John Terry felt when best friend and fellow club legend Frank Lampard decided to leave the Blues in 2014. After a successful 13-year stint that included three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Champions League and a Europa League triumph, 'Super Frank' felt his time in west London had come to an end.
Chelsea's all-time leading scorer left in a controversial manner, not least because many supporters were reluctant to see him go, even at 36. It was initially believed he had agreed to join New York City FC ahead of their MLS debut in January 2015, but he instead signed with sister club Manchester City on a six-month contract that eventually extended to a full season.
Chelsea stalwart Terry was left gutted by the split, which occurred three years before he himself left Stamford Bridge for Aston Villa. He found it particularly hard to stomach fellow club greats like Lampard and Ashley Cole becoming his rivals, with the latter also leaving in 2014 to sign for Roma.
"It just doesn't seem right to see them in different shirts. Maybe over time that will ease, but it doesn't seem right," said Terry in 2014, via football.london."We have grown up together and won and lost together at Chelsea. We have done many great things and it was sad to see them go."
Terry, 44, and Lampard, 46, were the bedrock of Chelsea's golden years, always ensuring the Blues remained a formidable force amid a revolving door of managers and marquee players. But for the first time in nearly 15 years, the club icons experienced their football battles from opposite sides.
Despite the bittersweet departure of his comrade, Terry's admiration for Lampard never wavered. And he has often singled his pal out as Chelsea's finest of all time.
"To me there is no doubt [he's the best]. Before that there was Gianfranco Zola but Lampard has been an absolute legend here and his legacy will remain ever," added Terry. "It's a legacy for the younger boys to come and try and fill those big boots and replicate what he's done. That will be very tough for someone but he's an absolute hero for the fans, with the players as well and how he pushed us individually and collectively.
"He has been an idol and someone I inspired to be like in training. Around the place he was a great character but footballing wise I have never come across someone who works as hard as he does to improve his game."
Both Lampard and Terry have rekindled their Chelsea connections since retirement, each briefly serving in coaching slots though never patrolling the same touchline. Lampard took the reins from July 2019 to January 2021 before parachuting in to weather an 11-game crisis towards the end of a tumultuous 2022/23 season.
Terry took a different path and joined as a consultant in early 2022 before pivoting to become a Chelsea academy coach 18 months later. He's currently operating in the dugout for the Baller League's 26ers, while Lampard barely missed out on securing Coventry City a ticket to the Championship play-off final.

Andy Carroll opens up on shock Dagenham and Redbridge move and why he turned down 'more money' from 'six or seven clubs at higher levels'
Andy Carroll has revealed the reasons behind his stunning decision to drop down to the sixth tier of English football - admitting he turned down lucrative offers from up to seven clubs at higher levels to join Dagenham and Redbridge. Last week, the former England and Premier League striker signed a three-year deal with the National League South side, also acquiring a minority ownership stake in the club. He had previously played for Bordeaux in the French fourth tier, where he became a fan favourite in his single campaign. The 36-year-old dropped down the divisions and took a huge pay cut, even revealing that he was losing money by playing for them. Now, Carroll has opened up on his decision to choose passion over money again by joining Dagenham. 'From the first meeting with the manager, I just knew it was the right club,' Carroll told The Athletic. 'I had probably six or seven clubs on the phone at higher levels, driving distance from home, and more money, but for me, it was the whole package of the club. 'I could speak to the owners, and they'd tell me what the future was going to look like. I could also speak to the manager, and he could tell me what it would be like. I just felt like I wanted to be part of it.' Regarding his aims with the east London club, the former Liverpool star added: 'I think the main thing that I would like to see is the academy set back up. 'If you've got 60,000 kids in the area under 16, you've got an opportunity. With West Ham around the corner, The Academy of Football, look at the players they've produced over the years. To get that up and running is key for the club - it's a necessity, really. 'You look at the club and you think it's got potential. It's 30 minutes into London on the train. It's a fantastic area. I could go to a League One (third division) or a Championship (second) team, and be mid-table and play bits and pieces, not really enjoying it, and float around. 'Or I could come here, start from the bottom, and have a project where I can work on the pitch and off the pitch to hopefully bring something fantastic to the club in the area.' Carroll started his career at Newcastle before earning a £35million switch to Liverpool in 2011. He played for England nine times, scoring at the 2012 Euros. Carroll also had spells at West Ham, West Brom, Reading and returned to Newcastle before moving to Amiens in September 2023. He stayed in France for the 2024-25 season, and scored 11 goals in 23 matches last season for Bordeaux, who finished fourth in the National 2, France's fourth division.

Arne Engels in Celtic reminded as Rodgers eyes up transfers
Coasting to a 4-0 victory over Premier League opposition, regardless of what stage of pre-season it comes, is an indication of a squad brimming with ability and confidence in equal measure. Last season's record-breaking £11million signing Arne Engels recognises recruitment is a normal part of football but insists he and his teammates have shown how good they are already without further additions. Usually doing their business late in a window, the Scottish champions have already added six to date. Kieran Tierney and Hayato Inamura bolster the backline while Benjamin Nygren, Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand provide options middle to front. Ross Doohan returns to the club as a third-choice goalkeeper. With Tierney and Nygren the two likely to improve the starting XI immediately, Rodgers wants more. But Engels points out the manager already has a very strong squad at his disposal. "We have a really good squad," the Belgian midfielder insisted. "And there will be always rumours about players coming in, going. It's up to us to keep this all inside and to work on the players that are here. You see that today also, that we have a lot of quality already. 'We'll see what's going in and going out, we never know, but the squad that is now here is fantastic. "I'm trying to do my best here and to get ready for the new season," he said. 'There will always be rumours and it's up to me to just show on the field what I'm up to. 'I'm here at Celtic and I really want to do great for this club and to reach a lot of things, so I'm not really thinking about something else." Nygren, while he can also operate wide, comes in to add to a midfield already packed with experience and class - Callum McGregor, Paulo Bernardo, Reo Hatate, Luke McCowan and Engels fighting for the three spots. Therefore, even if the latter does stay put he will be far from guaranteed first team football unless he is at the very top of his game. The talented midfielder wouldn't be opposed to locking his teammate in a basement until September 1st. "Hopefully," he says when that tongue-in-cheek suggestion is put to him. "He's an amazing player and also really good for us and in the dressing room too. 'He's a lovely guy, so hopefully he will stay. We never know what is going on. He would be fantastic for us next year and like today also. 'He's just an amazing person that is really helping us in every kind of aspect of the game." A motivation of Engels' when quitting the Bundesliga for Scotland a year ago would have playing in the Champions League. A run to the knockout stages and then a ding-dong battle with Bayern Munich will have whetted the appetite. But so did the win over a Champions League-level side in Newcastle. "One hundred percent," he admits. "That's a big goal of ours, to reach the Champions League. In a few weeks, there is a really big game, big games coming up. 'It's up to us to now get physically really ready for that, and I'm sure we will do really great in those two games. "We just want to first get into the Champions League and then we will see how it goes there. 'It's not that easy that everybody is saying you need to reach the same thing or you need to reach further because we did really great.
