This is going to be Michael 2.0 – Van Gerwen ‘excited' to return in New York
The Dutchman, who will wear a new shirt at the Madison Square Garden event, has taken time away from the game to deal with his divorce from wife Daphne.
But he is ready to get back into action in an event he has won twice before.
'This is going to be a new Michael. Michael 2.0,' he said. 'I am really excited, everyone knows I have had very tough times, still going on, but I am dealing with it, living by the moment.
'I still love what I do. I play darts. We all need to understand one thing, there is only one thing I love more and that is my kids.
'I wouldn't be here if I wasn't here to win, I want to come here and put my head on something else, that is something that is really important.

'I also need to be realistic, I have never been in this situation, never had so many weeks of not playing competitive darts. My head says something else, my head says I have to smash it.'
Van Gerwen will be in a strong field that also includes Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price.
Humphries is yet to win this event but is desperate to add it to his collection.
'It's great to be back, it's such an iconic venue, I always look forward to this one most on the World Series,' the world number one said.
'This is the one all the players want to win, it is really special.

'For me to put my name on that trophy would mean a lot to me, so it's something I'm desperate to do.
'Hopefully I can tick another thing off the CV that I have always wanted to win.'
Nathan Aspinall is also playing and hinted he has a better chance of winning without his wife and the distraction of the bright lights of New York.
'It's great to come to America, normally my wife has been with me, but I'm on my own so it's a bit different to previous years,' Aspinall said.
'I think I'm going to be a bit more focused on the tournament itself than previous years, which hopefully means I can go and win it.'

Where will Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins be filmed? The celebrities will be taken to Wales where they will immerse themselves in special forces training, led by chief instructor Billy Billingham and his team of directing staff (DS) which includes Jason Fox or 'Foxy', Rudy Reyes and Chris Oliver. Billingham said: 'This course is not an attendance course, the bar is set high and will not waiver. 'Every recruit is a volunteer who chose to step into our arena. Although many will start, very few will finish and even less will pass. This is not for the weak minded or faint hearted.' 2025 World Matchplay Darts: Full Wednesday schedule as Luke Littler hunts glory
World Champion hunting a first prestigious Blackpool title World Champion Luke Littler is back on the Blackpool stage aiming to take the next step to a first Betfred World Matchplay title. The teenage sensation made a sparkling start to his bid at the weekend and now aims for a spot in the last eight at the Winter Gardens. Fellow World Champions Gerwyn Price and Michael Van Gerwen are also back on the stage after being part of Monday's explosive session aiming to avoid shock exits. Blackpool has already seen some major names go out of the £800,000 event with Luke Humphries ' first-game exit a stunner. Seeds such as Rob Cross and Dave Chisnall have followed Cool Hand out of the door leaving Littler as the strong title favourite. Tuesday four ties sees multiple World Champions take to the stage and Record Sport takes you through the quartet of eagerly-anticipated encounters. Michael van Gerwen vs Josh Rock Van Gerwen overturned a 4-3 deficit against Raymond van Barneveld to prevail in a battle of the Dutch darting legends. Barney exploited some early errors from Van Gerwen to hit the front before the World No.3 found his range in the closing stages to progress. Rock produced a blistering performance to begin his bid for Matchplay glory. The World Cup winner came of age on his Winter Gardens return to sweep aside former European Champion Ross Smith. Farke has revealed he accepts the decision, but he had wanted him to be part of the training camp. Speaking after Tuesday's 4-1 win over SC Verl, the Leeds boss said: 'I've spoken openly and honestly with him about the situation and have strongly recommended, until the situation is sorted, he should do the job and be professional. "He said he's not in the mental state to do this. What should I do? I can't call the police to drag him here on the training pitch. "It was his decision. For that, he trains at the moment in England, individually, and will then also train with under-21s at Thorp Arch.' LaLiga sides Celta Vigo and Real Betis are in the mix for Joseph's signature. The latter had a £10million bid rejected in January. Farke touched on this on Tuesday, adding: "He came to me, and to us, and said he wants a new challenge and would like to have a move. "He has also hinted he prefers a move to Spain due to his Spanish roots and, yes, that was more or less his call. 'We just want players who are excited about the project to play with Leeds United in the best league in the world, here in the Premier League, who want to be here with us and want to be successful with us. 'If this is your wish, I, as a manager, won't stand in the way and [I] accept this because I just want players who want to be here and are buzzing. I've said, 'Okay, Mateo, I accept this, I won't stand in the way'. 'On the other hand, it's also clear we, as a club, have invested a lot in him. "Time, money, backing and he is on the long-term contract and we value him. One thing is also for sure, we will just make a move possible once there is a club who meets the expectations of the club.' The 21-year-old Spain Under-21 striker made 39 league appearances last season, scoring three Championship goals and earning 11 starts. Leeds have been strongly linked with Fulham's Brazilian hitman, Muniz, and even though the player is open to a move, they must meet Fulham's £50million asking price. Meanwhile, fellow Leeds attacker Patrick Bamford has been told he is surplus to requirements ahead of the club's return to the Premier League.
