Chinese firms in Europe call for ‘substantive' deal at China-EU summit

Chinese businesses in Europe have urged political leaders in China and the European Union to seize a 'historic opportunity' to resolve their disputes and reach a 'substantive' trade deal at this week's China-EU summit in Beijing.
They called for a reduction in trade barriers and political interference, stressing that Beijing and Brussels needed to find a compromise on thorny issues such as electric vehicles and rare earth exports, as both faced a common threat in US President Donald Trump's tariff war.
'We the business community hold high expectations, hoping that China and Europe can seize this historic opportunity to achieve substantive results' at the summit, said Fang Dongkui, secretary general of the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU (CCCEU).
The comments come as Chinese and European leaders
remain divided over a slew of issues ahead of a highly anticipated leaders' meeting on Thursday, which will be chaired by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, as well as Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
President Xi Jinping will also meet von der Leyen and Costa during their stay in Beijing this week, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.
China–EU economic ties should not be hijacked by geopolitics, but should instead serve as a stabiliser and engine for global trade
Fang Dongkui, CCCEU
The CCCEU hopes the two sides can broker a deal to remove trade barriers in several areas, including the EU's tariffs targeting Chinese electric vehicles, Fang told the Post.

China's quest for AI self-reliance undeterred by Trump's new action plan

Despite recent concessions and shifts in rhetoric, US President Donald Trump's new artificial intelligence action plan leaves the core of American policy towards China unchanged – maintaining tight restrictions on key technologies while accelerating deregulation and infrastructure support for his country's AI giants. Analysts said the administration's strategy would intensify the US-China tech rivalry, and with Washington unlikely to loosen its grip, China would have little choice but to double down on self-reliance. The White House on Wednesday unveiled its first comprehensive AI strategy since Trump's return to office, outlining plans to tighten export controls on US chipmaking tools and curb the global spread of Chinese AI models. Trump's AI strategy reflects a subtle shift in rhetoric from the 'small yard, high fence' approach of his predecessor Joe Biden, but in essence little has changed, said Bo Zhengyuan of Plenum. 'So far, the 'yard' hasn't gotten any smaller,' added Bo, a partner at the independent China-focused research platform. 'What's different is the rhetoric – it's now more head-to-head than containment.' The 28-page action plan tasks the US Commerce Department with closing loopholes in current export restrictions, boosting oversight of end users abroad, and exploring the use of geolocation tools to block access to 'countries of concern' such as China.

‘Respect for life': China sets out ethical guidelines for autonomous driving technology

China has released ethical guidelines for autonomous driving technology, highlighting the need for user safety and technology transparency. Advertisement Publishing the guidelines on Wednesday, the Ministry of Science and Technology said automated driving systems 'must demonstrate a high degree of respect for human life and actively seek effective strategies to minimise harm'. Algorithms, models and other content related to the technology must be clearly documented and readily accessible for inspection, it said. The guidelines aim to 'guide the regulated development and application of automated driving technologies, prevent ethical risks during R&D and product application, and promote the healthy growth of the sector'. Beijing stepped up its oversight of self-driving technology after three people died in a crash involving a Xiaomi electric vehicle in late March. The car was in driver-assistance mode and crashed into a barrier two seconds after the system alerted the driver to take control. 02:17 Xiaomi to cooperate with police after fatal crash involving self-drive feature on SU7 EV Xiaomi to cooperate with police after fatal crash involving self-drive feature on SU7 EV During a meeting in April, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's top regulator of the manufacturing and IT sectors, urged EV makers and technology providers to fully comply with regulations and not to overstate the role of the assistance systems.

Tencent's new AI-powered programming tool fully automates application development

Tencent Holdings this week commenced beta testing on CodeBuddy IDE, a smart programming tool for software developers that provides artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language support for designing, building and deploying new applications. The tool from Tencent Cloud – the AI and cloud computing unit of Shenzhen -based Tencent – underwent a closed 24-hour test on Wednesday with more than 50,000 invited participants, according to a Tencent post on WeChat . Beta testing involved real-world users, outside the CodeBuddy development team, who examined the pre-release version of the new programming tool. In programming, IDE stands for integrated development environment – essentially, a one-stop platform for developers to make use of various software tools to write, test and debug code. CodeBuddy, according to Tencent, features a fully automated 'conversation-is-programming' approach. That enables even a non-technical user to complete the entire development process – from product concept and design to deployment – using natural language dialogue and AI 'without writing a single line of code', which would significantly boost efficiency in building applications. Tencent's foray into sophisticated, AI-powered tools for developers reflected the significant advances being made by Chinese tech companies. According to Alibaba, agentic AI coding was 'transforming software development by enabling more autonomous, efficient and accessible programming workflows'. AI agents are software programs that are capable of autonomously performing tasks on behalf of a user or another system.
