Mets place Starling Marte on injured list with bruised right knee, activate Jesse Winker
Marte and Winker play the outfield, but have been used primarily as the Mets' designated hitter.
'It's funny how things work,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'You gain one, you lose one.'
Also on Tuesday, the Mets selected the contract of right-hander Alex Carrillo from Triple-A Syracuse and designated pitcher Zach Pop for assignment.
Marte had seven hits in his last three games, including three on Sunday as the starting left fielder against the Yankees. The 36-year-old is batting .270 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 58 games.
The Mets hope to have Marte back after the All-Star break.
'It was something he was dealing with during spring training and a little bit of last year,' Mendoza said. 'We're going to let it calm down. Talking with him today, he's in a pretty good spot.'
Winker, activated from the 60-day injured list, last played on May 4. The left fielder is batting .239 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 24 games.
'He's a big bat, especially from the left side,' Mendoza said. 'You know what you're going to get at the plate. I'm excited to have him back.'
Carrillo, signed by the Mets out of the Venezuelan Winter League, has a blistering fastball that has been clocked at 100 mph.
'It's a pretty cool story,' Mendoza said. 'A guy who was in Independent ball last year. I remember getting a call from someone in Venezuela that I know, telling me about this guy. We got him in the organization, and he's in the big leagues now. We're going to give him a good look here.'

The 31-year-old righty had been on the IL since April 28 due to right shoulder inflammation that ended his fifth start of the year prematurely. When his recovery timeline was pushed back, he was moved to the 60-day IL. Luckily for the Dodgers, Glasnow didn't face any setbacks in his third minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City this past Thursday. So Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts gave him the nod for Wednesday's series finale versus the Brewers. Advertisement The 2024 All-Star didn't give up an earned run in the five innings he pitched. That said, he wasn't perfect. Glasnow issued three walks, one of which indirectly led to a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Glasnow gave Jake Bauers a free pass to first and then balked, allowing the Milwaukee first baseman to advance to second. Bauers stole third and, because of a throwing error from Dodgers All-Star catcher Will Smith, was able to race home for the Brewers' first run of the game. That tied things up. In the top half of the inning, a controversial checked swing paved the way for the Dodgers to get their first run aboard. Third-base umpire John Libka said Los Angeles center fielder James Outman didn't go, and, so, instead of striking out, he ended up walking to load the bases with two outs. Then Brewers starter José Quintana walked Shohei Ohtani in four pitches, surrendering a Dodgers run. Advertisement That was the only run Quintana conceded in his six innings, however, as he proceeded to get out of the frame by inducing a flyout from shortstop Mookie Betts. The Dodgers plated a go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Third baseman Miguel Rojas reached first on an infield single. Pinch hitter Teoscar Hernández drew a walk. Hyeseong Kim pinch ran for him and was part of a double steal that saw Rojas swipe third. After another Ohtani walk to load the bases again, Betts escorted Rojas home with a sac fly to make it a 2-1 game. The Brewers got some more magic from recent call-up Andrew Vaughn in the ninth inning. The first baseman, who Milwaukee acquired from the White Sox in the Aaron Civale trade on June 13, pinch hit for Bauers with one out and two men on. Despite a broken bat, he dropped a single to center, bringing home the game-tying run. Advertisement Vaughn has now recorded at least one RBI in each of his first three games with the Brewers. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees have designated two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu for assignment, one day after manager Aaron Boone had said the aging infielder with a diminished defensive range would primarily be used off the bench. The Yankees, who owe LeMahieu about $22 million on the remainder of a six-year deal that ran through the 2026 season, made the announcement before Wednesday night's game against the Seattle Mariners. LeMahieu, who turns 37 on Sunday and has dealt with a variety of toe, foot and hip injuries, was hitting .266 with two homers, 12 RBIs and a .674 OPS this season. He won his first batting title in 2016 with Colorado and his second with New York in 2020, when he hit .364 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in 50 games during the pandemic-shortened season. The decision to designate him for assignment comes after Boone announced that All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. would move back to second base , where LeMahieu had made all 35 of his starts this season. Update: Meet Cancelled, One Horse Confirmed Dead After Severe Flash Flooding At Ruidoso Downs originally appeared on Paulick Report. Severe flash flooding in Ruidoso, N.M., during the evening of July 8 caused multiple barns at Ruidoso Downs to be overrun with rapidly-rising floodwaters and reportedly "washed out" the racing surface. Social media videos from the area showed several loose horses in the flood waters, and later videos showed grooms leading horses through receding water to higher ground. A track official confirmed that one horse died as a result of the flooding, one or two more remain unaccounted for, and 10 have been treated for minor wounds. At least three people in the town of Ruidoso died as a result of the flooding, reports Ruidoso was in the midst of a Quarter Horse race meet, and was preparing to host a pair of Grade 1 races for 3-year-olds on Saturday. "We lost the track again, it washed out our race track," Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford told Track owner Johnny Trotter confirmed to the Daily Racing Form that the 2025 meet at Ruidoso has been cancelled. "We can't run at Ruidoso again this year,' Trotter told DRF. 'We can't put it back together.' Last year, nearby wildfires in June and subsequent flooding on July 20 forced Ruidoso Downs officials to petition the New Mexico Racing Commission to move the remainder of the meet, including the prestigious All-American Futurity, to the Downs at Albuquerque. That option remains open again, said Izzy Trejo, executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, who added that "there are a lot of logistics involved." New Mexico also has Zia Park in Hobbs, Sunland Park on the Texas border near El Paso, and SunRay Park in Farmington in the northwest corner of the state. Prior to Tuesday's flood event, both the town of Ruidoso and the racetrack were still recovering from last year's South Fork and Salt wildfires that left severe burn scars and led to flooding of the racing surface and racing cancellations in 2024. According to CNN, the area has been under 12 separate flash flood emergencies since June of 2024. This time, the Rio Ruidoso river swelled to a preliminary reading of 20.24 feet after torrential rainfall, well above last year's record of 15.86 feet. The river rose 19 feet in less than an hour, reports Track officials reported that Ruidoso Downs itself didn't see any rain before this flooding; the water came down from rainfall in the mountains. There was a 30-minute warning to evacuate, but not enough time to get horses moved. Ruidoso Downs spent 120 days rebuilding and renovating after last year's floods, KOAT reported last month, and only managed to reopen for racing on May 23, 2025. KRQE reported earlier this year that after the fires and floods of 2024, Ruidoso Downs added culverts and an eight-acre retention pond to help prevent future floods.
