Plantations hold steady, await catalyst

Plantations hold steady, await catalyst

The Star20 hours ago
PETALING JAYA: Analysts are mostly neutral on the plantation sector, projecting the crude palm oil (CPO) prices to trade between RM3,800 and RM4,200 per tonne in the second half of this year (2H25).
According to Kenanga Research, palm oil prices are expected to stay firm through a good 2025 season, underpinned by a global edible oil supply deficit this year, which may persist into 2026.
Cost pressures should also stay manageable, thanks to firm selling prices, the research house said in a note to clients yesterday.
While valuations appear to have bottomed out and are not excessive, Kenanga Research noted that 'there is no strong upside catalyst either.'
It pointed out that edible oil demand remains visible and resilient, with a trend-line growth of 3% to 4% yearly. Meanwhile, supply is expected to grow by only 2% to 3% over 2025 to 2026.
As a result, edible oil prices, including palm oil, will likely stay sufficiently firm.
Many pure upstream players have also turned net cash, including Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Bhd , Ta Ann Holdings Bhd , TSH Resources Bhd and United Malacca Bhd .
'Hence, decent to good dividend payouts can be expected, unless they embark on merger and acquisition (M&A) activities,' it added.
The research house expects non-integrated planters to increasingly become dividend-yield plays.
'For larger integrated players, we expect more M&A or diversification into non-plantation businesses – hence, (they are) likely to stay net borrowers.
'Even so, as the balance sheets of integrated players such as IOI Corp Bhd , Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd and SD Guthrie Bhd are backed by valuable landbank, their current gearing levels should not be a key concern to investors,' Kenanga Research pointed out.
It added that firm CPO and strong palm kernel selling prices are expected to help absorb most of the cost upticks in 2025.
As a result, upstream margins are expected to stay healthy.
Altogether, 2025 margins should stay robust, thanks to upstream operations.
Kenanga Research named IOI, with a target price of RM4.10 per share, as its big-cap pick, citing its sector-leading return on equity and declining gearing, which provides greater headroom for M&A.
Among pure upstream players, Hap Seng Plantations, with a target price of RM2.40, still offers good, defensive upstream exposure, supported by over RM500mil in net cash.
For the longer term, United Malacca – with a target price of RM6 – should see rising profits from newly maturing estates, while TSH – with a target price of RM1.30 – is expanding its planted area by 25% to 30% over the next three to five years.
Genting Plantations Bhd with a target price of RM5.70, should also see a stronger 2Q25 contribution from its newly opened Jakarta Premium Outlet.
Meanwhile, CGS International Research (CGSI Research) has lifted its CPO price forecast to RM4,200 per tonne for 2025.
In a report, the research house noted that upstream players stand to benefit the most from high CPO prices.
'Our earnings sensitivity analysis shows that Genting Plantations, SD Guthrie and Hap Seng Plantations deliver the strongest earnings uplift with every 5% rise in CPO price,' it noted.
With the current CPO rally starting early June 2025 driven by macro and policy shocks, CGSI Research expects upstream-focused names to benefit more significantly.
'After factoring in our revised CPO price assumption, accounting for forward commitments and softer palm kernel prices, our earnings revisions suggest Hap Seng Plantations, SD Guthrie and Ta Ann are the biggest beneficiaries from higher CPO prices under our coverage,' the research house highlighted.
CGSI Research also recommended investors seeking defensive plays to accumulate agribusiness companies with high dividend yields, such as Hap Seng Plantations and Ta Ann, citing more stable earnings compared to other sectors.

Balance of prudence, ambition forecast in 13MP

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is set to mark a turning point for the nation's economic trajectory, aligning public policy with structural shifts at home and abroad. Amid an evolving geopolitical backdrop, the five-year development roadmap for 2026 to 2030 is expected to balance ambition with fiscal prudence while anchoring long-term socioeconomic transformation. According to BIMB Research, the government is likely to prioritise measures that cushion the economy against external headwinds and support broad-based growth. 'Given the challenging external environment, we anticipate the government will place greater emphasis on strengthening and sustaining domestic demand,' the research house said in its report. This, it added, could involve further salary adjustments for civil servants and a potential increase in the minimum wage to above RM2,000 by 2030. Development of human capital is likely to feature prominently, BIMB Research said. 'The continued rollout of training and upskilling initiatives could raise the share of skilled labour in the workforce to over 35%, which could push the national median salary to beyond RM4,000 by 2030,' it highlighted. However, BIMB Research cautioned that global uncertainty would remain a dominant factor in shaping Malaysia's macroeconomic strategy. 'US President Donald Trump is expected to remain a central figure on the geopolitical and economic stage through 2028,' it said. Over that time frame, international markets are likely to face continued uncertainty due to the potential volatility and unpredictability of US trade and economic policies, the research house added. Simultaneously, geopolitical tensions in both Europe and the Middle East are anticipated to persist well into the next half of the decade. In such a climate, commodity prices are expected to remain broadly stable at current levels through at least 2029, BIMB Research pointed out. On a positive note, the tabling of 13MP is expected to inject fresh confidence into Malaysia's capital markets. 'Malaysia's equity landscape is poised to benefit significantly from the strategic initiatives laid out in the 13MP,' BIMB Research said. Sectors including construction, technology and utilities may see renewed investor interest as positive spillovers emerge from increased alignment between public investments and private-sector participation, it added. On the macro front, the research house projects Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) to grow at an average of 4.5% a year between 2026 and 2030, with nominal GDP expected to rise by 6.4% annually. 'Highlighting nominal GDP is critical, as it serves as a key benchmark in shaping Malaysia's fiscal policy framework under the 13MP,' BIMB Research said. By 2030, the fiscal deficit is expected to narrow to 2.9% of GDP, helped by the reduction of subsidies, prudent spending and gradual decrease of pension payments. With development expenditure capped at 3.5% of GDP, annual allocations are forecast to reach up to RM99.4bil, BIMB Research projected. 'This is a substantial allocation that can significantly support domestic growth in the latter half of the decade, particularly through increased investment in construction and utility infrastructure,' it said. 'The 13MP is expected to be anchored on existing Madani policy frameworks such as the Public‑Private Partnership Master Plan 2030, New Industrial Master Plan 2030, and National Energy Transition Roadmap, all of which are designed with a 10-year implementation horizon,' it added. Key regional initiatives like the East Coast Rail Link, Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone, and development projects in Sabah and Sarawak are also expected to receive further support. Overall, the 13MP would likely reflect a strategic recalibration, BIMB Research said, adding that it expects the plan to include key principles like resilience through diversification, leveraging long-term secular tailwinds, and systematically responding to changing external conditions.

Felda now owns 89pct of FGV, extends closing date for acceptance to Aug 15

KUALA LUMPUR: The closing date for Federal Land Development Authority's (Felda) takeover offer for all remaining shares in FGV Holdings Bhd that it does not already own has been extended to August 15. This will be the final closing date, according to Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB) on behalf of Felda. The previous deadline for FGV's minority shareholders to accept the offer is July 7. Last month, Felda launched an unconditional voluntary takeover offer for all remaining shares in FGV that it does not already own at RM1.30 per share. This is part of Felda's long-term strategic plan to privatise FGV and consolidate its control over the plantation company. Felda and parties acting in concert already collectively held about 89 per cent of FGV shares as of today, Maybank IB said. The offer targets the remaining stake in FGV, comprising about 1.1 billion shares. If the takeover results in Felda holding 90 per cent or more of FGV shares, it intends to delist the company from Bursa Malaysia. The cash offer represented a 9.91 per cent premium over the six-month volume-weighted average price of FGV shares up to the last trading day before the initial notice of offer. FGV has not been able to comply with Bursa's free float ruling, which requires at least 25 per cent of the shares to be held by the public, since February 2021. As of February this year, FGV's public shareholding reportedly had fallen to 13.09 per cent, below Bursa's 25 per cent minimum threshold. Bursa had rejected FGV's application for an extension and has instructed the company to rectify the shortfall by Sept 10 this year, failing which trading could be suspended. This is the second attempt by Felda to privatise FGV. The first was in December 2020, which resulted in the former acquiring more than 82 per cent of FGV. The offer price in 2020 was also RM1.30. Based on FGV's latest annual report, the minority shareholders include the Sabah government and Yayasan Islam Terengganu.

Its president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposal will be tabled at the organisation's upcoming meeting, and may be brought to the attention of the state government for consideration. 'I think it is time for Saberkas to have its own headquarters with a hall to rent for various purposes such as weddings and sports in the hall. 'We see how Wisma SABATI is being fully utilised, and we want the same for Saberkas,' he told a press conference after chairing the Sarawak Saberkas Supreme Exco Meeting at a hotel here today. He noted that the current Saberkas office is located on the 20th floor of Wisma Saberkas, while the 19th floor is leased to the Public Works Department (JKR). Only two floors of the building are owned by the organisation, while the remainder is under private ownership. On upcoming initiatives, Abdul Karim, who is also State Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development; and State Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts announced two major youth programmes for this year – the Saberkas President's Cup Futsal Championship and the Youth Glamping Programme. The futsal tournament is scheduled for November in Samarahan, featuring attractive prizes to be finalised by the organising committee. Open exclusively to Saberkas members, it will involve participation from all 82 branches across Sarawak. 'This futsal will be a big event, and I believe the attractive prizes will attract many participants. The main condition is that participants must be Saberkas members. 'This will be a good platform to strengthen ties among youth from all over Sarawak,' he said. Meanwhile, the Youth Glamping Programme is planned for August in Layar, Betong, to offer participants a nature-based, yet impactful experience. Touching on Saberkas' overall performance, Abdul Karim said the organisation has shown strong momentum in 2025, with 55,992 registered members, 494 units, and 82 branches throughout the state. 'During the period from November 2024 to June 2025 alone, a total of 244 programs have been carried out covering social, welfare, sports, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and education activities. 'I would not be surprised if by the end of this year, the number of programs reaches 500. 'The Women's Bureau and the Saberkas Caring Unit in helping the community, especially during disasters such as floods and fires are also active in programmes,' he said. On finances, Abdul Karim said Saberkas is in a healthy position, with RM3 million placed in fixed deposits and regular income generated from its owned commercial spaces. 'We have assets that generate returns, and every month we have good collections. This situation allows us to continue planning to strengthen the organisation, including the establishment of our own headquarters,' he said. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah headquarters HQ lead Saberkas
