While the 2025 WNBA season is rolling full speed ahead, one franchise is already building excitement for its 2026 debut. The Toronto Tempo, awarded an expansion team in December 2024, will become the 14th franchise in WNBA history and the first based outside the United States. The team will play its home games at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

In February, the Tempo named Monica Wright Rogers as their general manager. Now, they've made another major move to strengthen their front office.
Ben Pickman of The Athletic reported on Friday:
"Eli Horowitz, a longtime Los Angeles Sparks staffer and their current assistant GM, is taking a job at the Toronto Tempo as their AGM and SVP of basketball strategy."
Horowitz brings a wealth of experience, having spent seven seasons with the Sparks as assistant general manager and vice president. He will be Toronto's new assistant general manager and senior vice president of basketball strategy.
He'll work closely with Wright Rogers to oversee the team's salary cap management, basketball operations, analytics and scouting efforts.

The team released a memo to announce Horowitz's hiring, and Wright Rogers shared her thoughts on bringing him aboard.

'I'm thrilled to have Eli on board as we shape the Tempo into a winning WNBA franchise,' Rogers said. 'He brings impeccable credentials to our front office — elite scouting, advanced analytics, innovation around our cap strategy and a winning mindset.'
She added:
'Just as important, we share core values around culture and collaboration, and a vision to build something lasting. He's the ideal partner to shape a first-class franchise for our inaugural season and beyond.'
During his tenure in Los Angeles, Horowitz played a key role in bringing stars like Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson to the Sparks.

As Toronto prepares for its inaugural season, it's clear the Tempo is focused on building a strong, forward-thinking foundation from day one.

'Could have hired anyone': Tennis world explodes over Jannik Sinner announcement

Alex de Minaur has made a bright start to his North American hard-court campaign, amid a golden opportunity for the Aussie tennis star to climb the rankings before the US Open. The World No.13 was too good for Yunchaokete Bu at the Citi Open in Washington on Wednesday, winning 7-6 (5) 6-2. The Aussie made a somewhat slow start and was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set, but showed his class in the second by running away with it. The win was de Minaur's first since Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. He'll now play Czech 11th seed Jiri Lehecka in the Round of 16, with a golden opportunity to rise in the ATP rankings. De Minaur doesn't have any points to defend heading into the US Open because he didn't play any of the lead-up events last year. The Aussie was sidelined by a hip injury he sustained at Wimbledon in 2024, meaning he didn't play between the grass and hard-court grand slams. That means he doesn't have any rankings points to defend this year, and any wins he records will see him rise in the standings. With Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper all withdrawing from next week's Masters 1000 event in Toronto, de Minaur has a chance to gain ground on his rivals. With a deep run in Washington and Toronto, he can surge back into the top-10 and potentially get himself an all-important top-eight seeding for the US Open. That would ensure he doesn't face anyone higher than him in the rankings until the quarter-finals. 'It was somewhat difficult at the start of the year and mentally taxing knowing that I had zeros on my ranking because I missed three Masters [also Shanghai],' De Minaur said before the match on Wednesday. 'I knew it would be important to put myself in a good position for the back end of the year when I have little to defend, giving hope that I could gain some serious points and momentum and build on the ranking. So going into the tail end of the year, I'm excited for the opportunity and hoping I can play good tennis and take care of my chances.' Jannik Sinner re-appoints trainer Umberto Ferrara Meanwhile, World No.1 Sinner has stunned the tennis world after announcing he's reunited with former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara. Sinner parted ways with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year after twice testing positive for banned substance clostebol in March 2024. The banned substance entered Sinner's system after Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray to a cut on his own hand before giving the World No.1 a massage without gloves on. Ferrara had given the spray to Naldi, and they both paid the price when Sinner opted to part ways with them. But Sinner's team announced on Wednesday that Ferrara is returning with immediate effect. "The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open," a statement from Sinner's team said. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level." RELATED: Jannik Sinner triumph could force Aussie coach to backflip on exit call Flood of support after tennis rocked by news about Wimbledon finalist Sinner had explained his decision to part ways with Ferrara and Naldi at the US Open last year. "Now, because of these mistakes, I'm not feeling that confident to continue with them," he said. "I was struggling a lot in the last months. I was waiting for the result. The only thing I need right now is some clean air." Tennis world reacts to Jannik Sinner announcement In February, Sinner cut a deal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to take a three-month ban, which many thought was very light punishment despite the fact he ingested the banned substance inadvertently. He returned right in time for the French Open, finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz before turning the tables on the World No.2 in the Wimbledon final. The optics of bringing Ferrara back onto his team have raised eyebrows around the tennis world. Aussie great Paul McNamee wrote on social media: "Jannik Sinner rehiring Umberta Ferrara has to be up there as one of the most astonishing PR moves in tennis history. You can afford to hire anyone in the world. Why oh why Jannik?" If he stands by his belief that it was an honest mistake like they've claimed from the beginning, why wouldn't he want to rehire him? Refusing to rehire him because a few idiots on twitter will cry would be silly. I don't get how even the most moderate and forgiving critics of the Sinner Saga (like me) can possibly look at this news and not think something is off. BYU has added a new international guard

Kevin Young has brought another international prospect to Provo. BYU has signed Austrian combo guard Aleksej Kostić, the program announced Wednesday. 'We're very excited to add Aleksej to our program here at BYU,' Young said in a statement. 'He brings valuable experience having represented his country on the national team level. He is a high-level shooter who can play multiple positions and gives us another ball handler and play maker. We look forward to helping him take his game to another level.' Kostić most recently played in the Austrian Basketball Superliga, where he averaged 6.5 points per game and shot 36.3% from 3-point range. He is currently training with the Austrian National Team for their FIBA Men's World Cup 2027 qualifying matches in early August. The 6-foot-4 Kostić will be one of five international players on BYU's roster this coming season, joining Keba Keita, Khadim Mboup, Dominique Diomande and Mihailo Boskovic.

Altius Completes Sale of 2/3 of its Silicon Gold 1.5% NSR to Franco-Nevada

Altius Retains 0.5% NSR interest as Long-Term Portfolio Component ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland and Labrador, July 23, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Altius Minerals Corporation (TSX: ALS) (OTCQX: ATUSF) Altius Minerals Corporation ("Altius") is pleased to announce that Altius Royalty Corporation ("ARC"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altius, has completed the sale of a 1% NSR royalty covering the Silicon and Merlin gold deposit discoveries in Nevada ("1% NSR Silicon Royalty") to a wholly owned subsidiary of Franco-Nevada Corporation ("Franco-Nevada") (TSX & NYSE: FNV) ("The Transaction"), pursuant to a royalty purchase agreement entered into by ARC and Franco-Nevada (the "Agreement"). ARC will continue to hold a remaining 0.5% NSR royalty interest in Silicon (recently renamed to the Arthur Gold Project by AngloGold Ashanti plc ("AGA") as a long-term component of its diversified portfolio. The purchase price for the 1% NSR Silicon Royalty interest is US$ 275 million (~ C$ 375 million) comprised of US$ 250 million in upfront cash paid at closing and a further payment of US $25 million in cash payable upon the conclusion of an ongoing arbitration process that confirms the area subject to the royalty under final award to be consistent with Altius's interpretation of the partial award of the arbitration tribunal that was issued and reported on earlier this year. The Board of Directors of Altius has received a fairness opinion from Cormark Securities Inc. which opinion concluded that, based upon and subject to the assumptions made, procedures followed, matters considered, limitations and qualifications set out therein, the consideration to be received by ARC pursuant to the Transaction is fair, from a financial point of view, to ARC. Brian Dalton, CEO of Altius commented, "We are pleased to partner with Franco-Nevada on this royalty, which encompasses AGA's world-class Silicon and Merlin gold deposit discoveries in Nevada, as well as extensive areas of prospective surrounding land. The Transaction crystallizes significant value for shareholders while further demonstrating the ability of Altius's Project Generation business to amplify the return profile of its overall royalty investment portfolio. The decision to retain a third of our Silicon royalty interest also provides continuing growth exposure to this emerging gold district, while confirming the addition of precious metals as a long-term, well-balanced component of our shareholder's diversified royalty portfolio. We now look forward to the ability to explore a wider set of capital allocation and deployment opportunities, facilitated by a considerably strengthened balance sheet and liquidity profile, and to further growing shareholder value." Anticipated Benefits to Altius Shareholders Capital Allocation Opportunities Cash, after taxes and fees, expected to increase to more than C$ 360 million (assumes up front and further payment proceeds from this Transaction and also from the recent acquisition of Orogen Royalties Inc. by Triple Flag Precious Metals Corp.) Total liquidity increased to more than C$ 540 million (including C$ 116 million available under a revolving credit facility and C$ 62.5 million potentially available under an accordion feature) Creates enhanced flexibility to evaluate external M&A opportunities while limiting equity level dilution of existing assets and the embedded growth potential of our portfolio Improves ability to opportunistically increase per share exposure to existing royalty interests through share repurchases Retained Royalty Exposure Continuing optionality exposure to gold resource growth1 from current ~16 Moz resource estimate at the Arthur Gold Project, as AGA continues aggressive exploration and delineation drilling programs and the reporting of encouraging results Achieves rebalance of commodity exposures while confirming precious metals and another tier-1 quality royalty as components of Altius's long-term, diversified portfolio. Stikeman Elliott LLP is acting as legal counsel to Altius and ARC. About Altius Altius's strategy is to create per share growth through a diversified portfolio of royalty assets that relate to long life, high margin operations. This strategy further provides shareholders with exposures that are well aligned with global growth trends including increasing electricity based market share within energy usage, global infrastructure build and refurbishment growth, increased EAF based steelmaking, steadily increasing agricultural fertilizer requirements and the enhanced appetite for financial asset diversification through precious metals ownership. These macro-trends each hold the potential to cause higher demand for many of Altius's commodity exposures including potash, high purity iron ore, renewable energy, base metals, and gold . In addition, Altius runs a successful Project Generation business that originates mineral projects for sale to developers in exchange for royalties and that has a demonstrated track record of driving outsized direct returns from its overall royalty investment portfolio. Altius has 46,315,304 common shares issued and outstanding that are listed on Canada's Toronto Stock Exchange. It is a member of both the S&P/TSX Small Cap and S&P/TSX Global Mining Indices and the S&P/TSX Canadian Dividend Aristocrats Index.
