Sacred Piprahwa Buddhist relics put up for auction brought to India after 127 years

NEW DELHI: In a significant assertion by India of its "cultural diplomacy", the sacred Piprahwa relics of Buddha - taken away during the colonial period - have been brought back after 127 years through an outreach that started with the govt stepping in to stop their auction by Sotheby's Hong Kong in May. PM Narendra Modi hailed the return of the relics -gems as "a joyous day for our cultural heritage", after culture minister Gajendra Shekhawat received them at the Delhi airport on Wednesday. "It would make every Indian proud that the sacred Piprahwa relics of Bhagwan Buddha have come home after 127 long years," Modi said on X. The relics have been kept at the National Museum and will be placed on public display after a special ceremony. "It may be recalled that the Piprahwa relics were discovered in 1898 but were taken away from India during the colonial period. When they appeared in an international auction earlier this year, we worked to ensure they returned home. I appreciate all those who have been involved in this effort," the PM said. These sacred relics highlight India's close association with Buddha and his noble teachings, he said. "It also illustrates our commitment to preserving and protecting different aspects of our glorious culture," the PM said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo The return of the relics is a benchmark in cultural diplomacy and marks the first of its kind public-private partnership to repatriate antiquities with the govt collaborating with Godrej Industries Group, which privately acquired the entire collection of 349 gems, according to the culture ministry. This 'PPP' is being cited as a model in cultural collaboration that can help protect and preserve global heritage. It said amid global solidarity post-Pahalgam terror attack, the return of relics also strengthens India's role as the national steward of Buddhist heritage. The Piprahwa relic jewels were discovered in 1898 at the ancient Buddhist stupa at Piprahwa in UP. The relics were part of a larger find, including bone fragments, soapstone and crystal caskets, a sandstone coffer, excavated by British civil engineer William Claxton Peppe from the stupa - widely identified as ancient Kapilvastu, birthplace of the Buddha.

CM YUVA scheme turning job seekers into job creators, says CM

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the CM YUVA Scheme has emerged as a transformative instrument of social change enabling lakhs of youth across the state to embark on a journey from self-employment to self-reliance. Speaking at the inaugural function of the 2-day CM YUVA Conclave and Expo 2025 here, the CM said: "This initiative has proved to be an enabler for lakhs of youths. Many of them have now become full-time job-givers. The officials and department must ensure that at least 50 youth from each district visit the CM YUVA Conclave and Exhibition so they can gain first-hand knowledge about various govt schemes, startup resources and market opportunities. " He said over 68,000 youth have so far received interest-free and collateral-free loans amounting to Rs 2,751 crore under the scheme. "This is not just a scheme—it's a movement. A golden opportunity for every youth who has a dream but lacks resources," he said."It is not just a financial aid programme, but a robust platform providing mentorship, market access, and essential resources to empower young entrepreneurs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The state govt is offering 10% margin money assistance to support budding entrepreneurs further," he said. The CM also launched the 'UP Mart'—a portal for machinery suppliers, aimed at easing access to essential tools and equipment for startups, besides witnessing the signing of 17 MoUs to boost entrepreneurship in the state. Addressing university vice chancellors and youth, the CM expressed concern over the growing disconnect between academic institutions and society. "Our institutions are becoming isolated islands, increasingly cut off from the people and government schemes. This disconnect is dangerous," he said. He pointed out that due to a lack of information, many young people fall prey to fraudulent schemes, get burdened by debt, and are often left with no choice but to migrate in search of opportunities. "But now, this cycle will cease to exist… thanks to this scheme," he said. Reflecting on the 2017 Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra of the BJP, prepared under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said a commitment was made to promote traditional industries through a dedicated scheme. Acting on this, a statewide survey was conducted post-2017, which revealed that every district had unique traditional enterprises. However, due to corruption, lawlessness, and large-scale migration, these industries nearly collapsed. Turning this challenge into an opportunity, the state govt launched the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme in 2018. "What began as a revival initiative has today become a national brand," Yogi said, noting that the scheme helped boost UP's exports from Rs 86,000 crore to over Rs 2 lakh crore. "Earlier, Chinese products flooded the markets during festivals. Today, locally made ODOP items are finding a place in every household," he said. He added that the Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana launched in 2019, was offering training, toolkits and dignity to traditional artisans. "A society that doesn't respect its artisans has no future," he stressed. Yogi also announced that products from Uttar Pradesh will be prominently featured at the International Trade Show scheduled from Sep 25 to 29, 2025, at the India Expo Centre in Noida. "The buyer-seller meet held at this event has become a massive platform for showcasing the state's potential. No one would have imagined such innovation and enterprise from UP just a few years ago. From 4 lakh participants in the first year to 5 lakh in the second, the show is pushing forward our vision of taking local products to the global stage," he said. The event was attended by MSME minister Rakesh Sachan, chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary Alok Kumar, vice chancellors from various universities and other dignitaries.
