How Club World Cup feud was nearly THREE YEARS in the making as two stars ‘tried to offer each other out in the tunnel'

The Suna day ago

DENZEL DUMFRIES and Marcos Acuna's Club World Cup beef has been stewing for almost three years.
The pair were involved in a heated on-field bust-up as River Plate crashed out of the Club World Cup group stages against Inter Milan.

Tensions boiled over at the end when River star Acuna, further enraged by the referee's decision to send off team-mate Gonzalo Montiel, squared up with Inter defender Dumfries.
Dumfries, 29, had left a heavy challenge on his rival moments before the final whistle, and when the referee blew for full-time, the two stars could be seen going towards the tunnel.
It had appeared Dumfries was being pursued by the Argentine, though a picture from another angle actually showed him "offering out" Acuna and pointing at the tunnel before they start jogging over.
Players and coaches from both sides rushed over to get in the way, with Inter players successfully ushering Dumfries off the pitch to be held in the tunnel, while Acuna had to be wrestled to the ground on the pitch to stop him going after his old foe.
But this was not the first time the pair have clashed in a high-stakes game.
Dumfries and Acuna, 33, previously met on December 9 at the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina, who would eventually go on to win the tournament.
That heated clash had been one of the most memorable and feisty games of the entire Qatari tournament, with Dumfries and Acuna playing their part in the drama.
Argentina went 2-0 up in the second half through a Lionel Messi penalty, which had been awarded after Dumfries was deemed to have fouled Acuna in the penalty area, though the wing-back looked furious over the lack of contact before the dive to the floor which then saw the penalty given.
However, the Dutch hit back with a stunning brace from Wout Weghorst to send it to extra time and penalties.
But in the build-up to the shootout, Leandro Paredes had booted the ball at the Netherlands bench, causing a mass brawl which saw him flattened by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

The South Americans would go on to win the shootout 4-3 after Emi Martinez saved kicks from Van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.
Wild Argentina celebrations rubbing it in the noses of their European rivals saw Dumfries lose his head, and subsequently saw him get sent off AFTER the final whistle.
But while Dumfries had to go away and lick his wounds then, he had the last laugh in their follow-up meeting earlier this week.
Following their progression into the knockout stages, Inter's next match will be played out on June 30 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Chelsea and Manchester City have both confirmed their places in the knockout rounds.
After finishing second in Group D - a draw which has worked out favourable for them and convinced fans they will make the final - the Blues will take on Benfica on June 28.
City beat Juventus 5-2 to top Group H, and will face Al-Hilal in the early hours of July 1.

Former Arsenal wonderkid ‘banished by Ajax over WHATSAPP and told only to arrive at training ground when pals have left'

CHUBA AKPOM has been brutally axed from the Ajax first-team over WHATSAPP, according to reports. Club bosses want to sell the seven players to raise funds for new arrivals. According to De Telegraaf, Akpom and co will not even be allowed to use the field and gym facilities until AFTER the first team has had lunch. The Dutch giants technical director, Alex Kroes, messaged each of the affected players and told them they would not be welcome at the club after Sunday. Furthermore, their car parking spots have been taken away and there is now only one physiotherapist available between them. Sun Sport has contacted Ajax for comment. It comes as part of a brutal cull by new boss John Heitinga. The 41-year-old left his role as Liverpool assistant last month to take up the job. He made more than 200 appearances for the Eredivisie outfit as a player before spells as the reserve team boss and interim head coach. Arsenal academy graduate Akpom joined Ajax from Middlesbrough in 2023 for £10.5m. After struggling for minutes at Ajax this season he joined Ligue 1 side Lille on loan in the winter transfer window. He recently opened up on how he laid awake for days after receiving an offer from Saudi Arabia when he was with the Championship outfit. Akpom told LavieCutz on TikTok: "Before I signed for Ajax, I received an offer from Saudi Arabia. "I barely slept for five nights. When you hear that there is interest in you, it is different than when you actually see it on paper. "Then all kinds of things happen in your body. Everything starts to itch. I lay awake for days. My girlfriend and I were lying in bed thinking about everything. "You're about to get a certain amount of money, but you don't have it yet, but in your head, you're already spending it. "My girlfriend and I were in Disneyland and thinking about everything we could get…" 4

Forgotten Chelsea man could make dream transfer move after losing squad number

Chelsea spent £45million on Joao Felix less than a year ago but the forward was loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of last season and he appears to have no future at Stamford Bridge Chelsea flop Joao Felix could be offered a homecoming to Benfica after being stripped of his squad number at Stamford Bridge. Felix, 25, was loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of last season, scoring just three goals in 21 appearances. Milan have no interest in signing the Portugal international on a permanent basis, with Chelsea having paid a cool £45million for him last summer. After being left out of Enzo Maresca's 28-man squad for the Club World Cup in the USA and losing his No. 14 squad number to new signing Dario Essugo, Felix finds himself searching for a new club. ‌ At Benfica, the forward could go back to where it all started before he was sold to Atletico Madrid for an eye-watering £113m in 2019. It was in Madrid where his career began to spiral, having been one of the most coveted talents in world football as a teenager. ‌ Benfica are now willing to offer him a return, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola. It's said that the Primeira Liga giants are weighing up a €31m (£26.5m) bid. But agreeing a transfer fee is just one part of the equation. Felix still has a massive six years remaining on his Chelsea contract which reportedly sees him earn £130,000 per week. Face-to-face negotiations could take place as soon as Saturday evening, as Chelsea face Benfica in the last 16 of Club World Cup. Felix was somewhat of a silver lining for Chelsea during his loan spell in the second half of the 2022-23 season, playing under Graham Potter and latterly Frank Lampard, as the Blues endured a nightmare campaign. Following his move to Milan in February, it was suggested that Maresca wasn't fully behind his return to Stamford Bridge. But the Blues boss was clear when asked directly if he wanted to sign 25-year-old. ‌ "Absolutely yes, if Joao was here it's because I wanted to sign Joao," Maresca stated. "I don't know about the future, it's complicated to talk about the future. "For me, it's just about now and the reason why Joao left is because of his desire is to get more minutes. Here, since we started, he struggled to get minutes, and he wants to leave because he wants to play more minutes, it's no more than that."
