Xi Jinping celebrated China's "eternal friendship" with Central Asia at a summit in Kazakhstan on Tuesday, as the Chinese leader blasted tariffs and sought to assert Beijing's influence in a region historically dominated by Russia.
The summit in Astana brought together Xi with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
Under Russia's orbit until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the five Central Asian states have courted interest from major powers including China, the European Union and the United States since becoming independent.
At the summit, the group signed a pact of "eternal" friendship as Xi called for closer ties with the resource-rich region.
"We should... strengthen cooperation with a more enterprising attitude and more practical measures," said Xi in comments carried by state news agency Xinhua.
Central Asia is also seen as a key logistics hub, given its strategic location between China, Russia, the Middle East and Europe.
Speaking as Western leaders gathered on the other side of the world for the G7 in Canada, Xi refreshed his criticism of US President Donald Trump's trade policies.
"Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners," Xinhua quoted him as saying.
While Central Asian leaders continue to view Russia as a strategic partner, ties with Moscow have loosened since the war in Ukraine.
China has also shown willingness to invest in massive infrastructure projects in the region, part of its Belt and Road initiative that uses such financing as a political and diplomatic lever.

China stocks flat as investors gauge global trade tensions

HONG KONG: Chinese stocks were flat on Wednesday as investors weighed persistent global trade tensions and refrained from placing massive bets, while Hong Kong shares closed higher after a local holiday. At close, the Shanghai Composite index held its ground at 3,454.79, hovering near a three-month high. China's blue-chip CSI300 index climbed less than 0.1%. Defensive sectors helped lift the markets onshore, with the banking sector sub-index up 0.8% while liquor distiller sector advanced 0.6%. Tech shares weighted on the markets, with the semiconductor sector and AI-related shares losing around 2% each. Hong Kong shares edged higher as traders returned from a local holiday. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 0.6% at 24,221.41, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, which tracks Chinese H-shares listed in the city, gained 0.5%. The local property sub-index added 2%, helping boosting the markets. Cash-strapped property giant New World Development surged nearly 10% after closing $11.2 billion refinancing deal. Caution prevailed across the region as investors await developments in trade talks, after US President Donald Trump said he was not considering extending the July 9 deadline for countries to negotiate trade deals with the United States. The US and India are nearing a deal that would lower tariffs on American imports to the South Asian country, while doubt has been cast on a deal with Japan. Around the region, MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index edged up 0.1%, while Japan's Nikkei index was down 0.6%. BlackRock Investment Institute said they are neutral on Chinese equities in the second half due to trade policy and stimulus uncertainties, but see selective opportunities in priority sectors that could receive targeted support.

Yuan near 8-month high

SHANGHAI: The yuan held steady against the US dollar on Wednesday, trading near an eight-month high hit in the previous session, underpinned by weakness in the greenback and hopes for an easing of US-China trade tensions. The spot yuan opened at 7.1652 per dollar and was last trading at 7.1658 as of 0250 GMT, 8 pips lower than the previous late session close, and 0.16% weaker than the midpoint. 'We expect the Chinese yuan to continue its gradual appreciation against the US dollar, potentially reaching 7.1 by year-end and 7.00 by mid-2026, assuming the tariff truce holds and the dollar continues to weaken,' analysts at UBS Global Wealth Management's Chief Investment Office said in a note. 'The main risk to our outlook is a breakdown in trade negotiations,' they said, adding that broad dollar weakness should help limit down in the yuan.
