Bill Belichick fits right in at ACC media day — and even cracks a few jokes
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Before first-year North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick addressed the mob of reporters waiting for him at the ACC's media days, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney broke some news. He had already seen Belichick smile several times on Thursday. 'Has he given y'all more than, 'We're onto camp?'' Swinney asked. 'I anticipate that.' Advertisement Swinney, perhaps surprisingly, was mistaken. In 13 minutes on stage and 30 minutes in a side room, the famously terse NFL legend seemed like any other college coach in front of microphones. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach made a recruiting pitch and even drew three laughs in a five-minute span. The first came when he was reminded about his threats to pluck players from Foxborough (Mass.) High School to replace ones who were struggling with his New England Patriots. 'Yeah, can't use that one anymore,' Belichick cracked. When Belichick was asked about implementing pro-style systems without overwhelming 20-year-olds, he said, 'That's exactly what we're trying to do.' When the laughter stopped, he discussed the need to keep some NFL schemes and terminology while tweaking them to the college game, which features wider hash marks and different overtime rules. Belichick was not asked about his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, and the relationship that became one of the major stories of his first offseason with the Tar Heels. He said little about his personnel but expressed no concerns about a roster that includes 70 new players. The only questions he deflected were big-picture thoughts related to the game; those answers, he said, were better suited for collegiate veterans like Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, who worked with Belichick in the 1990s with the Cleveland Browns. But most of the time, Belichick did not seem like a rookie head coach in the ACC. When he was asked about visiting prospects' living rooms on the recruiting trail, he pointed out that in-home visits would be an NCAA violation for most of the year. 'Yeah, they come to us, and so we recruit from on-campus,' Belichick said. 'Honestly, it's been great. … Talking to them about what's real in terms of campus life, academics, football, what the expectations are, really that's what we want to do in recruiting. Advertisement 'Just be authentic. This is who we are. We're not really going to change too much. If this works for you, this is a great place. If it doesn't, then honestly, you're better off going somewhere else. We're not trying to overhype or oversell something we can't deliver. We're trying to sell who we are. I think a lot of people want that. But for the ones that don't, it's better for both of us that they go somewhere else.'

ESPN makes huge announcement for Bill Belichick's first UNC game against TCU
ESPN is placing a major spotlight on Bill Belichick's first game as head coach at North Carolina. For the Tar Heels' season opener on Sept. 1 against TCU, ESPN will air a special one-hour College Football Countdown show live from the sidelines of Kenan Stadium, per a press release. The game will kick off on Labor Day night, capping off the sport's first full weekend of action. "A talented group of college football minds join the show hosted by Matt Barrie along with analysts Tedy Bruschi, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban, and college football insider Pete Thamel," ESPN said in a press release. "Bruschi played his entire 13 season NFL career – winning three Super Bowls – under Belichick with the New England Patriots, while Saban spent four seasons (1991-94) under Belichick's tutelage as a defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns. Belichick is a frequent guest and friend of the program on The Pat McAfee Show during the football season." The Labor Day matchup will mark TCU's first visit to Chapel Hill since 1994. The two teams have met only three times in their histories. Earlier this week, Front Office Sports reported that ESPN is hoping to replicate the surge in ratings that came with Deion Sanders' debut at Colorado in 2023. The Coach Prime phenomenon drove record-breaking viewership across networks during his first year in Boulder. 'We have to wait and see. The potential is there,' ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions Kurt Dargis told FOS. 'There's definitely interest in him outside the typical college football fan. Deion was such a phenomenon. I still can't believe some of the numbers we got that first year he was there. It's too early to say.' 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Belichick's debut could be just the beginning. North Carolina is currently slated to appear on ESPN networks for at least five games this season — with up to 10 possible throughout the year.

Meet The New Guy: Jonathan Toews
Jets sign hockey legend and Winnipeg native Jonathan Toews to one-year deal in the hopes of gaining an impactful second line centre. The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a historic season, where they hit franchise bests across the board but with it coming to an end, they were forced to make some tough decisions. Longtime winger Nikolaj Ehlers left in free agency and the team really needed a big time signing to bring them back with one coming from a surprising place. Midway through last season, three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews said he was looking to make a return to hockey with one true team on his mind for the return. The Winnipeg native would go on to his childhood team and give the Jets a much needed add to their lineup. There's been recent debate throughout the league on how the Florida Panthers have been so successful with one of the leading causes being Sam Bennett listed as their second line centre. Contending teams look at the Panthers lineup with a first line of star talent followed by another anchor up the middle with Bennett. The second line centre spot has become a priority for certian teams and the Jets will see a significant improvement in this area. Vladislav Namestnikov manned the role for a majority of last season and put up just under 40 points for the second straight season. Winnipeg would love to get a higher end point producer in this role and Toews could open up some doors. Although Toews is closer to a 40-point producer at 37 years old, he can fill the all-important role of the defensive centre that helps keep opposing offences at bay like Adam Lowry. The captain will be sidelined for a majority of the season and Toews could step into the role while Namestnikov takes advantage of easier matchups on the third line and hopefully leads to more points. Toews' role on the team will be crucial as early lineup projections have him listed as the centre for the second power play unit and could use his prowess in the faceoff dot to win clutch draws. Only time will tell if his return to hockey will be an impactful one but the main belief throughout the organization after seeing him in a workout is that he will be able to play a meaningful role as Winnipeg had to fend off several other teams to land their hometown product. In addition to winning multiple Stanley Cups, Toews has earned several gold medals with Team Canada and won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward in 2013. He was also a finalist for the award three other times. Toews received the Mark Messier Leadership Award, showcasing his strong leadership qualities, which will be crucial in Lowry's absence. Over 1,067 NHL games, he recorded 372 goals and 511 assists for a total of 883 points, along with a +148 rating. He added 119 points in 137 playoff games across ten postseason appearances, bringing a wealth of experience to the most intense and demanding situations.
