Want to cook in Delhi while sitting in Chennai? A Chinese robot has just pulled it off with VR control

Mint4 days ago
A humanoid robot cooked a steak while being controlled from 1,800km away using a VR headset. Chinese company Shenzhen Dobot is behind the innovation.
The robot, Dobot Atom, was in Shandong. The operator was in Guangdong. From an Indian perspective, it's like Delhi and Chennai even though the actual distance between Delhi and Chennai is around 1,700km.
A video shared on social media shows the robot copying the engineer's hand movements through VR. The four-minute clip showed the robot doing delicate tasks like wiping the steak with a paper towel, pouring oil and flipping the meat. The robot even sprinkled salt with its fingers.
This technology, launched in March, may change how we handle household work, surgeries, nuclear inspections and even space exploration in the future, according to the South China Morning Post.
Dobot has now started global deliveries, with Japan getting the first batch. It is among the few Chinese firms to reach mass production. Eleven companies began such efforts in 2024, with six targeting 1,000+ units.
According to Dobot, the robot's hand movements are highly accurate, with a precision of 0.05 millimetres. For now, only the upper body can be controlled.
Dobot started in 2015 by making robotic arms. It has now entered the humanoid robot field. Their new robot, Dobot Atom, costs around $27,500 (around ₹ 23.7 lakh), according to SCMP.
The robot has five-finger hands. It can serve breakfast by placing toast, lettuce and cherries on a plate and pouring milk. The robot also walks upright like a human.
Earlier, NASA had also shown a similar VR-controlled robot, but with limited details on the network setup.
Social media users reacted to an earlier video that showed the humanoid robot preparing breakfast.
'This is really amazing. ROBOTS like these will be game-changer,' wrote one user.
One user wondered, 'Can it do ironing of clothes?'
'This is really cool. I could use them for my contracting business,' wrote another.
Another user wrote, 'Is this company publicly traded? If yes, I would invest in its stock.'
Meanwhile, Dobot's stock rose nearly 3% on July 4, closing at HK$55.60. It shows growing interest in their advanced robot technology.

Two and three wheelers rides in fast lane for Uber Mumbai: More than 60% of Uber customers in India are currently opting for two- and three-wheelers , marking a shift in consumer mobility preferences at the ride-hailing platform from passenger which leads India's ride-hailing market, employs about 1.4 million driver partners, up from 1 million in 2024, reflecting steady demand growth."In India, more than three out of every five trips are now on two-wheelers or three-wheelers," Prabhjeet Singh, president, Uber India and South Asia told ET. He was speaking on the sidelines of the Uber Pragati event in to him, a key driver of this transition is growing demand for affordable and flexible transport, especially in congested urban and semi-urban areas. Singh said categories such as intercity, airport travel, and premium offerings are also seeing "massive growth," supported by new product innovations and affordability as it expands into multiple use cases, Uber's electrification efforts have remained modest. The company operates 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across two-, three-, and four-wheeler categories, comprising less than 2% of its 1.4 million active vehicles in India."EV adoption is growing, but penetration is definitely lower than I would like it to be," Singh said. He pointed to hurdles including high financing costs, unclear residual value of EVs, and inadequate charging infrastructure as key challenges slowing the transition. India's EV ecosystem, according to Singh, is still developing, and the cost burden of vehicle ownership continues to be a barrier. "Someone has to buy the asset and deploy it on the platform. That's harder for EVs," he navigate these challenges, Uber is partnering with institutional fleet operators who invest in vehicles and charging networks. Its Uber Green service , which offers EV rides, is currently operational in three Indian is Uber's third-largest market globally by volume. To drive further growth, the company has started new services such as Uber for Seniors and Uber Pet besides affordability features like Wait and Save. While EV adoption remains a long-term goal, Uber is currently focusing on expanding access through lower-cost, high-volume mobility options, said Singh.

Chinese techies return not to impact iPhone 17 production, Apple's ramp-up plan intact

By Prasoon Srivastava The return of Chinese technology professionals from an Apple vendor's facility will have no impact on the production of the upcoming iPhone 17, sources aware of the development said on Tuesday. iPhone maker Apple continues to be on track to scale up production in India, sources said. According to the sources, Apple vendors in India, Foxconn and Tata Electronics , have also seen easing of capital goods sourcing from China. These capital goods are critical for the production of iPhones. "The return of Chinese professionals from Foxconn has had no impact on iPhone production. The production of iPhone 17 in India will be as per schedule," a source aware of the development on iPhone production told PTI. A query sent to Apple, Foxconn and Tata Electronics did not elicit any response on the matter. Multiple sources have shared that hundreds of Chinese professionals working at Foxconn India units have returned to China in the last two months. According to sources, these engineers were handling assembly lines, factory design and also involved in training talents to handle tools and machines for iPhone production. Another source said that there has been an easing of the supply of capital goods from China as well for iPhones. "Apple partners have seen an easing of supply of capital goods. So there is no impact on iPhones' production in India," the source said. The person said that there is no change in Apple's plan to ramp up production in India. According to multiple sources, Apple plans to increase iPhone production to 60 million units this year from about 35-40 million units that it produced in 2024-25. Apple CEO Tim Cook, during the second-quarter earnings call had announced that all iPhones sold in the US in the June quarter will be shipped from India. India-made iPhones are assembled in Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn's factory in Tamil Nadu. Tata Electronics, which runs Pegatron Corp's operations in India, is the other key manufacturer. Tata and Foxconn are building new plants and adding production capacity to increase iPhone production. Apple assembled 60 per cent more iPhones, worth an estimated USD 22 billion, in India in the year ended March 31, 2025. According to an analysis by S&P Global, iPhone sales in the US were 75.9 million units in 2024, with exports in March from India at 3.1 million units, suggesting a need to double shipments either through new capacity or redirecting shipments bound for the domestic market. "Apple's Indian exports already headed predominantly to the United States, which represented 81.9 per cent of phones exported by the firm in the three months to February 28, 2025. That increased to 97.6 per cent in March 2025 as a result of a 219 per cent jump in exports, likely reflecting the firm looking to preempt higher tariffs," S&P Global Market Intelligence report said. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had in April announced that iPhones worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore were exported from India in fiscal year 2025. The Apple ecosystem in India is one of the biggest job creators in the country. It is estimated to have employed around 2 lakh people across various vendors in the country. India's smartphone exports are growing at a healthy rate and have become a "consistent and significant" player in the sector, an official said, adding that the country has become a major mobile manufacturing hub today.
