The Kenyan-German drama, inspired by true events, follows a 13-year-old girl in rural Kenya whose father trades her into marriage in exchange for livestock. The movie, which recently screened at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, is co-directed by Toby and Kevin Schmutzler, Apuu Mourine, and Vallentine Chelluget, with a script by Kevin and Toby Schmutzler and based on a story by Milcah Cherotich.
The lead role is portrayed by Michelle Lemuya Ikeny in her feature debut.
The film has earned accolades including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Newcomer, the Special Jury Award at Beijing's BJIFF (Tiantan Awards), and dual wins at Raindance.
The deal was negotiated directly between Sabbour and the filmmakers at FilmCrew Media: Kevin and Toby Schmutzler and producer Lydia Wrensch. New Mountain is currently targeting a February 2026 theatrical release across the U.S. and Canada. Atlas International handles international sales.
In Kenya, producers say the film has raised $300,000 through its impact campaign, which includes the opening of a first all-girls boarding school. A mobile desert cinema tour is launching this summer to bring the film to remote villages. The project has garnered support from organisations including UNICEF, Girls Not Brides, and Girls First Fund.
'Nawi is exactly the kind of story we feel compelled to share—brave, beautifully made, and impossible to ignore,' said Khaled Sabbour, founder and CEO of New Mountain Films. 'It's not only been recognized by the global film community, but has ignited real-world change. We're honoured to bring it to North American audiences.'

Tyla Releases New Single ‘Is It'

Tyla Grammy-winning singer Tyla is ready to party after the release of her self-titled debut album last year. The South African songstress has been teasing her next project in recent months and giving fans a peek at her musical direction with the single 'Bliss' in May. Now, just as the summer is heating up and fans are eager to get moving, the 'Water' singer is helping them cool off with the new single 'Is It.' 'Is it the f**ks that I don't give? / Is it the men that I don't miss? / Is this song why we get along? / Or am I coming on a little strong?' she sings on the track. 'Is it the way this dress unzips? / Is it the girls that I came with? / 'Cause the more that you tell me 'Don't' / It's the more that you turn me on.' Tyla has been wasting little time since her debut as she puts in work on her sophomore LP. 'Every day I can be in the studio, I'm there. I'm working on the new project currently. I'm super excited because even though I love my debut album, I feel like a totally different person. Everything that has happened forced me to grow very fast,' she told Nylon of her progress. 'I'm also the type of person that gets bored very easily. So I'm excited to see this new version of me and hear what it sounds like and just have fun with it — just bring back fun in music.' Though it might feel like a quick turnaround from her Tyla album last April, the 'Push 2 Start" singer explained to Billboard that a lot has happened since she made her stateside breakthrough in 2023. 'I've changed a lot in a short amount of time because I was kind of forced to with how fast I had to adapt to everything,' she said. 'I don't think it's going to be the same energy [as Tyla]It's all in service of continuing to elevate her career as an up-and-coming star. 'I really want to be the best artist that I can be," she told Nylon. "When you have a lot of pressure, it makes you feel like you need to live up to what people expect. A year from now, I want to be making whatever I want to make, doing whatever I want to do — regardless of the pressures. That's where I want to see myself next year.'

6 albums you need to hear this week

In the age of streaming, it's never been easier to listen to new music — but with over 60,000 new songs added to Spotify every day, it's also never been harder to know what to put on. Every week, the team at Rolling Stone UK will run down some of the best new releases that have been added to streaming services. This week we've highlighted records from Barry Can't Swim, Wet Leg, Burna Boy, Kokoroko, Jessica Winter and Africa Express. The second album from Barry Can't Swim is a deep and introspective dive into the man behind the music. As Joshua Mainnie told us in the latest issue of Rolling Stone UK, the album came after a period of reflection on the time that turned him into a dance music superstar. 'I like to take the piss, have a laugh and not take myself too seriously, but there's an expectation that comes with that. I'm quite shy and it has been a lot for me to process that and be able to get on a stage and do that in front of people,' he said. On Loner, he dissects this beautifully and frankly, while adding a host of new floor-fillers to his catalogue. Listen on: | ‎Apple Music | | After becoming overnight sensations with 'Chaise Longue' in 2021, Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg have returned with a second album that sees them going for the throat. moisturizer is led by the chaotic, furious single 'Catch These Fists' and sees all five members of the Wet Leg live band write for the first time, focusing on replicating the joy and freedom of their lauded live show. Guitarist Hester Chambers explained: 'We were just kind of having fun and exploring. We focussed on: Is this going to be fun to play live? It was very natural that we would write the second record together.' Listen on: | ‎Apple Music | | Two years after his I Told Them… LP, stadium-dweller and worldwide superstar Burna Boy returns with No Sign of Weakness, a star-studded album that sees his star rise even further. On the record, he's joined by Shaboozey, Stromae, Travis Scott and – most surprisingly – Mick Jagger, showing himself as a cross-cultural phenomenon. Listen on: | ‎Apple Music | | Kokoroko are leading lights of London's world-renowned young jazz scene, but new album Tuff Times Never Last shows that they're not limiting themselves in terms of sound. 'Innately, we're jazz musicians but we've tried not to kind of box ourselves into one sound,' co-bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey said. 'So there is a level of freedom we're starting to feel. We want to continue being as creative as possible without feeling any boundaries.' Tuff Times Never Last shows off this sense of freedom in all its beautiful, transgressive glory. Listen on: | ‎Apple Music | | Jessica Winter says her debut album, suitably titled My First Album, is 'conceptually about 'somebody' aspiring to be a star and wanting to fill the void deep inside herself. Along the way there are various diversions and adventures, involving people, places, and things. Ultimately, however, she is on a journey of self-discovery and realisation, and that all she really needs is to love herself.' Given the Kylie-inspired, radio-ready pop music that inhabits the album, truly reaching gloriously for stardom, it doesn't take too much reading between the lines to work out who this 'somebody' is. Listen on: | ‎Apple Music | | Africa Express presents… Bahidorá sees the collective branching out once again. To make the 21-song record, they headed to Mexico and collaborated with musicians from four continents. On the record, they dip into and pay tribute to reggaeton, salsa, Latin and beyond, making an album that is born from all corners of the world and reverent to the music that came before it. ‘I'm serving her': Londie London pursues legal action against Minnie Ntuli for RHOD assault

Unseen Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD) reunion footage showed Minnie Ntuli assaulting Londie London during what was meant to be a clearing-the-air conversation. RHOD co-stars were left shocked, with Jojo Robinson calling the incident 'horrific to watch'. London said she is taking legal action against Ntuli, saying, 'She deserves to spend at least two weeks in jail'. Sultry reality star Londie London, real name Londiwe Zulu, is pursuing legal action against Real Housewives of Durban newcomer Minnie Ntuli after unseen footage showed her (Ntuli) assaulting the mother of two during part two of the season five reunion. In the physical altercation, the pair engaged in a one-on-one conversation, which London said she thought would clear the air about their on-screen beef. However, the conversation turned for the worse when Ntuli began to get visibly annoyed, eventually aggressively prodding London's forehead. The cast members were all left visibly shocked after seeing the footage, with Jojo Robinson describing it as 'horrific to watch'. Guys what the hell? Minnie is insane! This is unseen footage of Minnie and Londie's issue! #RHODurbanS5 — Mkhwanazi's Daughter® (@DineoDMufamadi) July 11, 2025 'I want nothing to do with Minnie. I'm going to open a case of assault', London said. 'I'm serving her, even for defamation of character'. If she were here, I would have served her already'. Elsewhere, the mother of two said, 'She's evil. She deserves to spend at least two weeks in jail'. Throughout the show's fifth season, the pair butted heads in what appeared to be one-sided beef from Ntuli aimed at London. It was initially unclear where the beef originated, but as the fifth season of the Real Housewives of Durban wrapped up, London recalled that it stemmed from a remark she made about a dress Ntuli wore when she joined the show. From there, the relationship between the two cast members went downhill.
